My guy is craving ice cream and is looking for me to make a raw substitute that actually tastes like ice cream (not bananas or nuts). I got the raw lifeline one once but it wasn't very good. Has anyone had any success with this? I'm trying to keep him as raw as possible but he's easily led and doesn't want to feel deprived.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Doreen

Hi, well, bananas are the number one way to make ice cream, have you tried my ice cream sandwich ice cream, it is the BEST!!!
but it does use walnuts.
you can use coconuts instead, but I LOVE the way the walnuts are so very creamy, MUCH better than the bananas, but no banans flavor, you do have to add a sweetener, I use dates.

This is my chocolate mousse recipe, which is excellent as an ice cream when frozen, you might try this.

You don't need the cinnamon or the spice, but it's up to you, also the walnuts if you add them whole is 1 cup, if you chop them first, use 1/2 cup, I just measure as I am adding to the water, thick is what thickens it up, is the nuts.
it's really an easy recipe, you can add all kinds of flavors, and it's excellent as a mousse, or as an ice cream, yummy.

I find that if the bananas are over ripe before you freeze them you get the strong banana taste from them but if you freeze them when they are just ripe the taste can be masked better.
I make 2 different icecreams at the moment and I do not think that the texture is a lot different from regular and the banana taste is not overriding.
I make walnut with banana, agave and then add the walnuts for the end of the mixing.
I make chocolate by adding some raw chocolate powder and raw carob and some agave and I can not taste the banana at all.

If you add enough other stuff it won't taste like bananas. I add carob & agave. I swear that tastes like chocolate fudge to me. I love it. Other fruit can be added as well.
Rawpriestess's ideas are great too. She's the queen of recipes. :D

Off the top of my head it seems as if mangoes pureed with avacado and assorted berries plus pecans and dates would be delicious.
Probably and odd color but delicious non the less.

Fresh coconut cream makes a nice base too.

They all sound yummy. I will give it a try if I ever get a minute. He's just so sick of everything tasting like bananas. Even though he loves bananas. Nuts aren't a problem, but all my stuff ends up tasting the same -- like banana's, dates or nuts. So, I will try your varieties. Thanks so much again.
PS. I am going for my level 1 cer next week. So excited!

Should the ice cream be eaten as soon as it's made or can it be frozen?
I'm asking because I made some ice cream last weekend and it turned out fine the banana taste was a little over powering but that was it. Anyways, I decided to freeze what wasn't eaten then when I went back to next day to eat it it was dark and looked like a froozen popsicle. What did I do wrong? Or was it just a bad idea to freeze?

I made the best milkshake the other day. It tasted like something SAD but better.
Lay-lays Vanilla Milkshake
1/2 cup of almonds
1/2 cup water
3 dates
ice (as much or as little as desired
1/2 of a cocuonuts meat
all of it's water
3 tbs of honey or kava or stevia
1 tsp. vanilla
Blend almonds and water first in the vitamixer until its almond milk (leave pulp) and then ad everything else to the vitamix, pour and enjoy.

A type of raw ice cream I love is one young coco and one banana blended and frozen. Perhaps you just don't want the sole base to be banana. If you don't mind a bit of banana then I would give it a try or use dates or honey with the young coco, milk and all. Avacodo is good two with dates and carob. I recommend that. But it sounds like you are really limiting yourself if you don't want to use nuts or bananas.

If you get an ice cream maker you can do all sorts of amazing things. Coconut meat, coconut butter, and then a nut, with flavors makes a great base. Raw Food Real World has some recipes, or you can always get some from this board and online.
Here is a recent experiment.. Vanilla White Chocolate Ice cream!

I got those nice little scoops by taking them right out of the ice cream maker! I find once it's in the freezer for a while, it hardens up immensely. I don't know if it's just my freezer, or something with the recipe. Thank you for the compliments :)
I was so excited the day I learned we could even have ice cream raw. If we can do that, ANYTHING is possible!

Well I don't have a perfect recipe yet to share... I haven't yet gotten both the flavor and texture perfect. I know rawguru.com has a few ice cream recipes, or the one I adapted mine from is:
2 c cashews
2 c coconut meat
1 c agave (I use waaaay less)
1/4 c coconut butter
pinch sea salt
2 T vanilla (I think.. taste it..)
1 C water
blend in a vitamix!
To make the white chocolate I used cacao butter..
let me know if you come up with something good!

RawGoddess -
I tried the young coconut & banana idea. Blended it last night, took it out of the freezer this morning and dumped it back into the blender with a handful of frozen strawberries and a touch of vanilla. Deliciously thick and creamy! The kids thought it great, too. I ate some, and then sprinkled carob powder and coconut shreds over the remainder. I drizzled honey over and mixed it all in. Wow! What a taste treat!

As for ice cream of another flavor. I had one with canataloop and organes. It tasted like orange sherbert. I believe you froze 1/2 of canataloupe. Blend one orange and add the canataloupe. Blend all and eat. I don't remember if you added any honey or other sweetner.
