If you look you will find what you're looking for!!
Last year I got very tired of getting rotten coconuts from grocery stores. So much so that I wrote a 10 step plan for picking a good coconuts (it's posted here somewhere) and never left the store without TASTING my coconut to make sure it was good. That many were bad!
However we searched, and found someone whose job it was in Northern Queensland Australia to trim coconuts off trees (it's considered a health hazard). He's able to send us delicious fresh coconuts for LESS than we would buy old stale imported ones from Thailand.
So groups of us get together, and buy an entire pallet. I just picked up 400+ coconuts from our truck driver (two car loads full) and we'll split them up this weekend.
The young ones last 2-3 weeks fresh, and the mature ones last 2-3 months. The difference is because the mature ones are ready to be dormant for a while before they grow. The young ones are not finished growing and can't survive once separated from the tree.
I just LOVE coconut water (that's my passion - not the flesh). It's so tasty!! Recently travelling in Indonesia we completely replaced water with coconut water and the results were electrifying! Thai coconuts are the only ones with really sweet water (they are fairly hybridized compared to USA or Australian coconts). The water here is more like Nature's Gatorade packed with energized water and lots of minerals and electrolytes. Slightly salty in flavour.
For people in Australia, contact me I'm happy to provide you with a direct source of coconuts (not through me - through the guy that actually climbs the trees and gently lowers them to the ground). If you're in the USA and are part of a group that is interested in coconuts, then start looking down in Florida for a tree trimmer who has coconuts available.
From what I've heard in Northern QLD Australia they BULLDOZE TONS of coconuts into landfill each week. Totally shocking!!!
Eat coconuts - they are great for you!!!
Happy in coconut heaven!!

PS Piers and I ordered enough young coconuts (green in shell) to have three each for the next two weeks!! YAHHHH!!!!
