I was in Wild Oats store today, looking at nut butters, not needing to buy any, but it was close to something I wanted. The Maranatha brand price was $18.99 for 16 OZ....OUCH !!!

Are you kidding me?!! Gosh, that hurts. And I was just thinking maybe next time I'll just buy it, I made some today and it's so hard to get it nice and creamy like store bought!

My almond butter and walnuts took up half of my grocery bill last time I was out LOL isn't it incredible what they can charge for things!

I recommend ordering almond butter online. Most stores that I've seen will gouge your wallet for the stuff.

Fair warning: I've read in a few threads that Maranatha is not truly raw.

Here's one, and you can search for others:

Maranatha isn't raw so if you're going to spend that much at least get one that is.

If you make your own almond butter, you will see that it takes 2 cups of almonds to make one cup of almond butter, so for those jars that are only a pint, it takes 4 cups of fresh raw almonds, and that is about 2 pounds of almonds, at the current price of $8 to $12 per pound for raw almonds, I think buying almond butter already made, already in a jar, and already smooth and creamy is a bargain.

I pay $20 per jar, it is 100% raw, and kept in the fridge section of the HFS.
And it's very easy to make, if you think it is too expensive.

but think of it this way, it is available, isn't that nice? for people who can't get raw organic almonds, or don't have a way to make them.

RP how do you make your almond butter? Will you share? Thanks

I have never even seen almond butter that's ORGANIC. I've seen some labelled raw, but not organic. I don't even have a source for organic nuts, actually. Are non-certified-organic nuts really treated with pesticides and stuff?

Now I'm again questioning my nuts/nut butter sources.

sigh.

Nut butter is super easy to make! Just use a Magic Bullet or other small food processor. Put in the nuts and keep processing until you have nut butter. Start with a small amount because it goes rancid quickly. Taste it and add a small amount of salt if you think it's necessary. You might also want to add a touch of agave nectar. My friend made butter from sunflower seeds and said it didn't taste right until she added the agave. Be sure to store it in the fridge, and you'll have to stir it before using it because the oil will separate out. You can buy a machine for making nut butter if you want to make a lot of it at once, but it's really not necessary. Even if you do want a lot, you can just use the Magic Bullet and keep emptying it out and refilling it.

I'm expecting my Vitamix to arrive any day now. Will it make nutbutters?

YEP a Vita Mix will make nut butters, but I use my champion juicer, it's so much easier to clean. and it's easier to do a small amount.

Hi RP - is that soaking or not? Or do you soak and then dehydrate?

At my Wild Oats, the *organic* almond butter is about $18, but the conventional almond butter is about half the price.
