Okay, so now that I have your attention you are probably all wondering what in the world are lunulas and do you have them too? ;)

They are the half moon shaped areas at the base of your nail by your cuticle. I don't have any and can't figure out what that means.

This all came about from reading Renee Underkoffler's book. She says in it that she has perfect moon shapes on her nails. I got to looking at mine and realized I don't have any except for on my thumbs.

I immediately went and looked at my husband's hands and he does have them.

So why don't I? Is it a sign of a problem? I am pretty sure that I had them before.

So what do you all think?

I'm not sure, but once heard that the more energetic the person, the more lunulas you have on your fingers. This seems right to me since I only have on my thumbs and am not naturally energetic.
I am curious if this is true and if those lunulas have any other meaning.

I only have them on my thumbs, always been that way. Now my mom has them on every nail.

I found the following doing a google search, don't know if it is true or not but interesting anyway!

"Overlarge lunulas or moons Overactive thyroid, genetics, self-induced trauma."

"No lunula Underachieve thyroid, genetics."

Really? That is interesting.

I don't know if I would say that I am naturally energetic or not.

Thanks

I've never had them, not even on my thumbs. I've always thought they were really pretty when I saw them on other people though.

This is not fair.
Now I am going to be going around looking at everybody's nails and they are going to think that there is something wrong with me.
I do not have any and am not aware of anything wrong with my thyroid

You won't have them of they will be very small if you have a thyroid problem. I already knew this from studing palm reading, and confirmed it when I did in fact develop a thyroid problem while pregnant. I finally stopped eating soy, the thyroid problem is gone and they are back.

I have the largest ones on my thumbs and then they start lowering to none on my pinkies. I wonder what that means

The length of the finger and the size of the lunula or moon suggest the
speed of growth of the nail. The shorter the finger and the less of its
visible lunula, the more slowly the nail will grow. (The thumb is the
exception.)

I was reading a post yesterday and someone mentioned that IF you are lacking in B-12 you won't have half moons on your fingernails. Hmmm... SO, I looked down and I don't have ANY moons at all!!! Do most of you take B-12?? What does a lack in B-12 do other than the fingernail thing??? Yes, I am headed to the store after work and picking up some, but I was just curious the effects of a low B vitamin diet. Thank you!!
KaitiUSAApr 26 2005, 02:57 PM
Yes I heard that too...I have moons on 7 or 8 of my fingers but it should be on all 10...I take sublingual B12 as well as a B complex vitamin and liquid vitamins.

I was sent an email by Deb a while ago and this is what it said:

Good vitamin B12 levels give you white moons on all
your fingers; the thumbs' are the last to go. (Tessa
Jupp, R.N., active in the Post-Polio Network, Dec.
2001)

If your moons have disappeared, you may have been
short of vitamin B12 for a long time. If so, you may
notice other symptoms of B12 Malabsorption Illness:
tingling hands and feet
numbness
memory problems
feeling exhausted
depression
sensitivity to noise
hundreds of brown spots
bleeding gums
burning sensation (possibly on thighs)
your legs jump at night
bone pain
balance and gait problems
heavy menstrual bleeding
diarrhea

Before your moons disappear, lines develop on your
nails. These can be faint, to very visible ridges like
fine wax drippings on a Chianti bottle -- lines on top
of lines, like hog back hills. To see them clearly, use
a magnifying glass or even reading glasses.

If you have faint lines, no more noticeable than the
tassels on the wheat in the image to the left, then run
through the barbed issues above, looking for ones
that apply to you. If three or four do, then be
warned that the others may be only a few years
away. If, that is, you do nothing.

Blue skin under your fingernails indicates that you
may be short of red blood cells and by extension,
the oxygen they carry.

I tried that on one of my nails. I could Kind of see one. Barely though. In fact, it could be my imagination.

Wow Lay-Lay,

that was interesting too. I am so glad that I posted this. I really didn't think anyone would know anything about it. ;)

I am also a celiac so I wonder if it has to do with malabsorption. I have been on a gluten free diet for 9 years but have very low vitamin D levels etc.. I do take B12 every day and have been tested for it and it was fine.

Helloooo what an interesting thread!

I have lunulas on my thumbs, index and middle fingers. my ring fingers and pinkies don't have them at all. I know my thyroid is fine because I have to get it checked every year, so this is all very interesting :D

Lunulas??? I thought it was something to do with glasses or keys lol. I say, push the skin gently and you will see them. They are there, just hiding. At least mine are. Always have. Even when I was a meat eater. The moons in my brain tell me not to worry about B12 deficiency. :) (By the way: http://www.rawveganforever.com/)
