How do you know if it is truly raw? I was at Wild Oats last night looking at all of the bottles. None of them said raw but several said "first cold pressed". Does that mean that they are truly cold pressed and raw or does that mean that the first step in processing is cold pressed but then they are heated?

Any brands that you know of for sure?

Thanks

I was told that cold-pressed is raw. I suppose that "cold-pressed" sounds more gourmet than raw olive oil!

I agree with you both. I ran into my health food store & specifically asked for RAW olive oil. She pointed me to the bottles & said that the cold pressed was the most natural state you could find. (the raw-est) But she also said the same thing to me about a canister of roasted carob (HUFFFFS)

I opted for the Extra Virgin cold pressed from Napa Valley. *shruggs*

I highly suggest getting olive oil imported from Italy. And make sure that it is the right color.

Lots of other countries have poor regulations on olive oil. For example, olive oil from the United States can be heated, but it can still be labeled as "cold pressed" on the bottle.

Alissa and several other people use Bariani. I bought it directly from their website, and am waiting for it to arrive.

the olive oil I buy at wild oats is labeled by Napa Valley Naturals. It is
"extra virgin", "organic" "first cold pressing" "cold pressed at temperatures below 98.5", "kosher".

It has a good taste - kinda pricey - around $14-15 per bottle.(25.4 oz)

In addition to cold pressed, organic, I go with the "unrefined"

Cold pressed is a marketing term and is entirely meaningless. The only term to look for is 'unrefined'.

I look for first for it to say extra virgin cold press

and then I look for a very green oil, not a green bottle, LOL. The greener the oil the better.

I usually buy mine at Publix, unsure of the brand name off hand, but it is very green and is organic. It usually runs me 15-18 dollars a bottle.

Thank you Terry, for sharing this info. I went to their website and found out that this is raw & an excellent oil http://www.worldpantry.com/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/ExecMacro/napavalley/faq.d2w/report#press

Thanks everyone. You really helped me out a lot. I will look for unrefined on the labels.
