Hi everyone,
My 20 month old is just getting over a stomach bug. She was sick for 24 hours and now her dad and I are. This is the first time she has ever been sick and it's unchartered waters for me. I wanted to get some not- so- typical advice from people with viewpoints different from my family and friends. Obviously I'm not going to give her Coke and popsicles like they suggest. Any suggestions or encouragements would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Yes, we have also had this - went through the entire family - UGH!

The most inportant thing is the keep everyone HYDRATED. A good way to tell if the little one is getting enough is to continue checking the diapers. If they are dry more fluids are needed. My son had this once at 14mo and just last month at 2 yrs both time with high fever.

I breast fed him more often and kept a jug of both fruit and fruit/green smoothie in the fridge and fed these in very small amounts throughout the day. I did not feel the need to try and get him to get solids.

With the smoothie I felt he was getting what he needs to keep up his strength with out over taxing his little body. I also tried to keep him close by having him in a sling when I could.

There are several other threads on this same subject with additional great advice too!

All ther best

So, the coconut water... is that the stuff inside a hard coconut? Everything sounds so repulsive to me right now! :o) Thank you so much for the suggestions, sure beats coke and popsicles!

The coconut water from young coconuts is clear; It's such a mild flavor and sorry that it sounds 'repulsive' to you. Nature provided us with healing remedies only we do not follow nature and get accustomed to 'drugs' 'popsicles' 'syrupy-corn syrup-gooy-sweet' stuff and we call this healing? The coconut water is so much tastier and healthier than 'coke' .

Do you know that 'coke' when it was first 'discovered' was green and had "coke' -cocane- the drug in it?

It's a myth that coca-cola was originally green, although the glass bottles it was sometimes packaged in *were* green. It is true that it used to contain cocaine, but that was a looooooooooooooong time ago.

I can't stress enough.. ELDERBERRY TEA or syrup.

It kills viruses dead.

Use a teaspoon of dried berries. If you don't want to boil the water, then soak them and give the water by the spoonful, but bringing the water just almost to a boil, then covering the berries does the best extraction in my opinion. Cover the cup with a saucer and STEEP for about 5 minutes or so. Then drink. You can add honey or lemon if you want.

Other things for tummies - GINGER water. Just smash up some ginger and soak it an hour in some hot/warm water. Then keep in the fridge (up to 3 days) and give by the spoonfull (for ache or vomiting). Please taste this before you give to a child -- could be too "hot"

If the baby can't hold down food, soak some barley in hot/warm water and give the strained broth by spoonsfull.

And for diarrhea, I still swear by the following, even though it is not vegan:

equal parts of raw applesauce and acidophilus yogurt
1 teaspoon of cinnamon powder

Eat all of it you want until the running bowels firm up.

The applesauce has pectin to firm up the stool.
The acidophilus has good bacteria to strengthen the gut.
The cinnamon warms and stimulates the gut.

It works every time.
If you're vegan, think of it as medicine (which it is) or find another form of acidophilus (I've never tried any other form but it should work)

Sorry you guys feel bad :(
Hope yo're better soon!

I agree with what everyone else suggested totally!!!

I also give carrot juice to my kis when they are sick.

If you use teas at all, yarrow is a great one instead of Tylenol when they are running a fever. It tastes great too.

You could partially follow the BRAT plan, giving baby mashed Bananas and real Applesauce. The R and T stand for rice and toast but those are not raw.

Isn't it a shame that they tell us to give our precious ones refined sugar and chemicals when they are sick?

Yes, I have used elderberry before and it works good to, also marshmellow has helped me in the past too.

They say when you put a tooth in a glass of the stuff the acid will eat away at the enamel within a day.

Also good for cleaning toilets...

Wow, thank you all so much! It's great to know that we can get so many answers in such a short amount of time. The blueberries are on their way! Yes, my mom shared the BRAT system with me and we gave my daughter the banana this morning. It's been a nasty virus, it even got my mom and sister who watched my daughter while I was at work. I appreciate the help... this was quite an experience for all of us!

The tooth thing is also an urban legend. Snopes has a ton of articles on various Coca-Cola legends (both true and false): http://www.snopes.com/cokelore/

I remember as a child my dentist telling me he treated another patient who drank a six pack of soda every day, had his enamel wearing down. Maybe he was trying to scare me, I don't know.

The coke thing was done by Myth Busters (love that show!) and the tooth was smaller and it had turned a nasty brown, almost black color. It does clean a penny well though lol! I hope your baby feels better!

Just another note on coconut water. When you go to the store to buy the young coconut for the first time, be aware that what you are looking for is not the typical mature, hard shelled coconut you drain and eat the meat out of. The young tender coconut is what you are looking for. Around here, and I'm not sure if this is standard for shipping to America, the young coconuts are shaved of their green skin, so what you will see is a white outer layer. They are also shaved flat on one end, and to a point at the other end, and wrapped in saran wrap. I did not know what I was looking for the first time, but a polite produce guy educated me. Be aware that some grocery store produce employees may have no idea what you are talking about and assume you're just talking about a typical coconut, but one that was just smaller than the rest. I had to call around to find a store that carried them.

There is a difference between "coconut water" and "coconut milk". Read up on it online. The nutrients in the water are better than any sports drink man has concocted.
