I am so with you on this. I have total self control when it comes to eating but have to be forced to exercise.

I'm right there with ya...
Joined a gym in February, went for two months then got incredibly sick. I'm now realizing I need to go back but it's hard to get that foot back in the door.
Let's just DO IT! Put on some comfy clothes, get in the car and GO.

:D

Maybe since it's summer you don't want to be cooped up inside while you exercise. Could you start doing exercises outside? Take a walk maybe and work up from there.

Baby steps....Start by just getting outside and running around with your son/daughter....That sure counts as exercise! You probably do more exercise already than you think too! Just take a walk with your child and have some fun! Before you know it you'll be doing more....and enjoying it! For moral support we do have an exercise thread on here too...join on or read for inspiration! ;)

Buy a really good pair of running shoes and put them where you can see them all the time.
Then just put on your exercise clothes. I get off of work and barely want to do anything--but if I can at least get the clothes on then I have to exercise plus It is so hot outside here--that I want to sweat to get as gross & smelly as possible so I can take a nice hot shower and rinse my pores out and be so fresh and know that that crap is no longer inside of me. Just think of a little bit of exercise can detox your skin so much, younger more radiant!!!

Ohhhhhhhh, this is so familiar! LOL It's like you are telling my story.
I was feeling all guilty about it and everything when I read about something called T-Tapping on a homeschool board. I checked out the web site and the exercises look so easy. But the results I kept reading about were amazing. So I ordered the DVD for Total Workout. Let me tell ya, my husband even had trouble with just the instructional video! LOL They work! They tone and make you lose inches fast. That coupled with a raw diet would be amazing.
I also like it because there is not jumping and dancing, etc. It's just simple moves but it is hard! And you sweat like crazy in 15 minutes and then you are done (at least with Basic Plus, if that's all you do).

Anyway, after you have "Tapped" for a while, then you exercise only a couple of times a week. I am really enjoying it.

If you are interested, go to http://www.t-tapp.com/home/
It can be a little annoying to hear "tuck butt" and "yes you can" after a while but I'll get over it if I can get the results I have read about!

Hi there! I used to be right in the same boat as you, well, minus the baby. :D Suddenly, I just lost the will to exercise some time ago!

I'm not sure if I can help any. Through my personal experience, I had always tried exercising the way other people did. Most people around my area go to the gym, jog/run, does strength training, etc. There's def. nothing wrong w/ those types of exercise. In fact, I think they're great. The thing I've learned for myself is that those exercises bored me. So I went to my local library & just looked up diff. types of activities which would require some strenuous workout. They had a whole bunch of videos! :D

Karate & kung-fu are my thing, hehe. It's kind of like I get a workout & learn self-defense. Also, group sports like football, basketball, badminton, etc.... Maybe you would want to exercise more if it was competitive.

I wish you lots & lots of insights. Hope you'll discover what's right for you soon. :o

I used to be a high school sports star. Basketball, volleyball, track and field. My goal was to outrun the High School boys and I did. I was always in great shape.

THEN kids came along and you know, it was the same story as above. So I got very heavy and sluggish and the more sedentary I was, the more sluggish I got. My jobs are always sitting in front of a computer. Couple that with a compulsive eating problem - I would drown my sorrows with food. (Ha! - IF ONLY!)

Now I am obese, my knees hurt, my back hurts. I hurt when I even walk. You wouldn't believe the junk I have bought and put onto and into my body to try to conquer or at least manage the pain. We went to Israel one year in December and it was kind of cool and damp and I hurt SO bad that we cut our trip short and came home after a week! I was scaring myself because I was taking HANDFULS of Robaxacet, Aspirin and Advil all at once. I was rubbing every concoction ever heard of on my knees. I was taking all the Glucosamine stuff, I was wearing magnets. I was using Dr. Ho (a TENS-like device). I was taking MSM. You name it. I would usually be okay sitting or lying, but even then my knees were sometimes twinging and pinging with shots of pain that made me jump and gasp. I would wake up at night with it. I tried ice. I tried heat. When I would get up I could hardly stand let alone waddle anywhere until it loosened up a bit. I would have to hold onto things just to get to the bathroom. I was usually limping and hobbling. ..And going down stairs!*&^%$# ouch? Then anytime after I would walk a ways, I would be so sore I would have to go to bed with pills and heat. Sometimes it would take me up to 3 days with a lot of that time in bed, before the excruciating pain would subside to the 'normal everyday' discomfort.

I need to walk/exercise to build up my muscles again and reduce my calorie intake to lose weight so I (eventually) won't hurt! What a merry-go-round! At least the raw diet is a start in one direction.

So if any of you are putting off getting yourselves into/back into shape, please don't let it slide like I did.

And if anyone has any good ideas for me, I'm listening. Sure, 'just do it', but I just 'don't do it'. It hurts soooooooo bad.

Doubleg, I am so happy to hear of your commitment to better health through raw foods and, now, exercise. That's great!

I would really suggest that you look into this T-Tapp thing. The success stories I have read have been incredible. I know I sound like a commercial but I have nothing no business with T-Tapp. I am just a user of the system and I feel so much stronger after only a few workouts.

I would suggest to you the "More" workou by T-Tapp. Here is the description:
4 workouts in 1 - This two DVD set contains the T-Tapp MORE Workout (with and without instruction), T-Tapp Chair, T-Tapp Broom (an aerobic workout), Step Away (a walking workout), plus additional rehabilitative instruction for daily activity (how to go up stairs without knee pain, etc) With obesity at epidemic proportions in the United States, this program was designed to show everyone that we CAN be healthy and fit in less time (all workouts are less than 20 minutes) and without pain. Originally designed for people of size, this program is excellent for those with health issues (frozen shoulders, bad backs, knee problems, arthritic conditions) -as well as for those with more birthday candles on the cake (degenerative spine and joint issues usually increase with time without proper movement). Take the first step in rebuilding your health, wellness AND fitness with the T-Tapp MORE Rehab Program - you'll get MORE results in LESS time!
Special price $59.95 (regular retail $79.95) also includes also includes "Yes You Can with T-Tapp" seminar, Measuring Chart, God Made/Man Made Dietary Program, Free 800# Tech Support and Free Online Support with Certified T-Tapp Trainer Diane Stone (retail value over $150!)

Just go to the web site store for more info. :)

PS I am so jealous. I can't wait to go to Israel!

ChaiLife,
Thanks for the advice. I actually did look at TTapp stuff once, but didn't end up getting it for some reason. I will revisit that now.

I can tell by your screen name that you might like to go to Israel. I first went in 97. Have been a total of 6 times now. Of course it helps that my son and his family live there. Gotta see those grandchildren! I have not had such a miserable time since that one time. It is never that easy - as the roads and everything - even the floors in the homes are all cobblestone, Jerusalem stone, granite or marble or something hard. And there are LOTS of steps. Everywhere. And you walk a LOT. But I manage not too bad most of the time.

One thing about that country, you are not likely to have a problem eating raw there! So much produce! And CHEAP! It's great. I want to live there permanently too, but haven't made it yet. We went and became citizens in Nov 04 but before we even got settled into a place of our own, we had to hurry right back to Canada as my mother was ill. She died. As a result of her illness, I was advised to get tested and I found out I had cancer, had surgery, am recovering and trying to get my health on track. Meantime, lots of $$$ spent, so we are being held up from going "home" to get ourselves established there. Maybe we'll meet there someday.

This group will make me feel less lonely for "the West" once I do move there.

Why not start off slow? You and the little one can go for a stroll maybe a block or two and add one block to the stroll each time you go out.

What is it about exercise!?!
I was taking Tae Kwon Do for a while, really want to go back, just have to get my ass in gear work wise so I have the time (I'm self employed)
Did buy DDR for the PS2 for my son...what a workout that is!! We have 2 dance mats too so we can do it together...I'm so bad compared to him!!

I know what you're talking about though. I used to do 16 hours of intense gymnastics a week. Then after I quit that (after 10 years!) I started soccer and basketball at the same time. After some time I stopped everything, but started up with the gym. Then I stopped that. The past month or so I've been trying to start up again and I've consistantly walked 1-2 miles minimum every day as well as 90 minutes of weights every other day. To me that's starting slow. I want to add a lot more cardio and eventually run?? Maybe lol. How's it going for you now?

I would comment on the Israel thing, but I will save that for another thread!

As for the exercise -- what about water aerobics. There isn't any stress on the joints, and the water supports you -- so that should work well. Even just "walking" in the pool. I remember seeing my grandma doing it and thought it was for old people. But I love it!

I personally do the new Tae-Bo. It's called Boot Camp Elite. I sweat like a pig. I am starting to get great definition in my arms and shoulders. Now if I could only do something about these thighs!

doubleg, I'm thinking a recumbent bicycle would really help you (recumbent basically refers to the stationary bikes where you sit on your a$$ in a comfy chair at an angle and pedal). They have to be decent quality and smooth in the pedals to be kind to your knees, but I think they're great. It's quite easy to develop a habit to do it while watching movies, tv, reading, brushing your hair, whatever. I bought a Schwinn at Costco, it wasn't insanely expensive, and it's good, there's no electricity requirements, and it keeps the data on the computer as long as you want. What I do is keep it without zeroing it until the end of the week, and I have a calorie target each week, so that makes me chip away at it. You could check with a physiotherapist, doc, or exercise physiologist, but I think it could be good for your knees, to gently develop the musculature to help, if you started with lower resistance and worked your way up. It's absolutely amazing for the low back. And the endorphins you generate will help with your pain overall, as well as being good for other health issues. I really recommend it. :D

How about a Tony LIttle Glider? my hubby is in constant pain, knees, ankles, neck & on top of all that he has to have shoulder replacement surgury due to severe arthritis. He's on oxycotin, zanex, high blood pressure meds, ect... (had a heart attack 10 yrs ago)
Anyway!! I bought him a glider because when he tried one a the store he said it didn't bother his knees and ankles...now if he would only use the damn thing!!!
I may bring it up from his basement and use it myself!

Here's what I do. I keep my weights, both dumbells and leg weights right by my computer chair. To get to the chair, I must trip over them. This reminds me to use them. When sitting in the chair, I stop what I'm doing every 15-20 minutes and pick up or strap on the weights. Because of my physical limitations, I can no longer do a workout for a solid length of time. But I can do a few minutes at a time, then rest in between. Perhaps not the ideal workout, but one that is doable for me.

If you go to the store, walk up and down every aisle at least once. Even if you know there is nothing you would buy on that aisle, do it anyway. That gets in some extra walking.

Does your 5 year old like The Wiggles? If so, get one of their tapes/CDs, videos or DVDs and dance along with them. My daughter loved doing that at that age. I couldn't always make it all the way through one tape without taking a rest, but my daughter sure could! And it was good exercise for both of us.

Get some hula hoops and hop balls. Those big balls that have the handle on them. Great upper body workout! Get the adult size and also one for your kid. I was shocked to find out what a good upper body workout those hop balls are. Since you are hopping, I assumed they'd work out your legs. But really, your feet are just touching the ground as you hop. Yes, you do push off a bit with your feet, but you are essentially pulling yourself up with the handle and pulling up your entire body weight. Super fun and hard workout! If you are not talented enough to do a hula hoop around your waist, try doing it with your arms or legs. They're great for working the smaller muscles in your arms. And kids love these things too. I bought extras. I also bought an assortment of jump ropes, including the extra long ones. When we lived in NY, I'd bring all this stuff out during the summer and the neighbor kids and teens would come over to play. Sometimes the adults would too. I also bought one of those big parachutes. That was mainly used by the kids, but sometimes I'd use it too. Everyone grabs a handle, working it up and down, sometimes bouncing toys off of it like light weight stuffed animals and balls.
