I tried some brazil nuts the other day and they have a strong gasoline-like taste. It isn't exactly gasoline, but very weird to me. I have never had brazil nuts before, so I am not sure what they are supposed to taste like. My wife has had brazil nuts before and said that is how they taste.
What is your experience?

Hmm, I love Brazil nuts...never a gasoline taste :D. But if your wife says they were fresh, I really don't know what to tell you. Maybe try shelling them yourself for a fresher flavor.
To me, the flavor is distinct, but it's mild. It is similar to Macadamia nuts.
They are very good for you. I've read men are advised to eat Brazils because of their zinc content. Apparently just one or two fulfills the daily requirement for zinc.

I love the crunch that Brazil nuts have...the flavor, as was already mentioned, should be pretty mild.. I've also heard that they make a good nut milk but I have yet to try it...Brazil nuts are also very high in selenium :)

I have been told that of all the nuts Brazil is the one most likely to be rancid

Every once in a while I will have one that is like that, Kinda like when you got a bad peanut. Toss it and try another!

If you get them out of the shell, they are probably rancid. If you taste a shelled one then shell your own and eat it, there is a huge difference in taste, color, and texture.

I have tasted them like that, they are rancid,
Brazil nuts have a LOT of oil, so they can go rancid easily and fast. YIKES!!!
Brazil nut milk is VERY oily, and is great as a cream or in desserts, that you want a truly heavy creamy taste, they alwasy taste to me like raw meat fat, or butter or cream. LOL
so they are exceptionally great in making whipped cream raw, or some such thing,
but when they have that gasoline odor, they are rancid, sorry, but maybe your wife only had bad ones, it's not surprising and to get truly fresh ones, isn't that easy, or affordable.
most nuts that we get in the states, are rancid, we just never knew the difference. I've had some fresh off our trees, and man oh man, the difference IS amazing.
we have almonds and hazelnuts. boy, they are good. and soooooo different than the ones in the store.
kind of like tomatoes and fresh off the vine tomatoes, they taste like a different fruit entirely.

RP,
Would I know if they were bad? I don't know how to tell.
I will get those books from you when I get back from out of town.

Hi, Cindy,
Well, I ALWAYS taste one first before I buy nuts or anything like that, and I only buy from a reputable co-op or HFS that refridgerates their nuts, and has them in bins, up high, not low where kids can get into them
this isn't always easy, but it works for me.
If it tastes, good then buy them, if they don't then don't buy them
If you can only get them in a package, buy the package, open in your car, try one, and if it's good take it home, if it isn't go right back in the store, and get your money back.
Brazil nuts are great, we used to eat them when we were kids, and my Grandpa would shell them for us, they were tough little guys, very hard to shell, he could do it with his fists, I've never seen anyone so strong as my grandpa, --- now he MAY have scored them first, or he MAY have had a knife or somthing in his hand, (he was a bit of a scamp) and would tease us kids all the time, so he probably didn't REALLY open them with his bare hands, but we sure THOUGHT he did. LOL

Freeze them to keep them fresher....
I don't like Brazil nuts, and think they always have a bit of an unpleasant
texture and taste, but I did buy some to try as milk.
