Yes, unless it is a little green worm with a leaf on the end, it's a sprout and it's still viable.
So it sounds like your cashews really are raw after all. I tried sprouting some labled raw which I bought from a store, but sadly they wouldn't sprout.
I noticed on a website selling hemp that when hemp seeds are imported to the US, they are heat-treated to specifically NOT sprout so people aren't producing marijuana plants illegally, so I think any kind of hemp product sold here is definately not raw.

I bought my cashews on ebay. I bought 10 lbs of them for about $5-something a pound (including shipping.) This was before I read that cashews "most definitely" aren't raw. So when I saw them start to sprout, I was kind of confused and needed some clarification. So I guess they are raw?
I was trying to figure out how they would sprout if they weren't raw. I thought maybe there was a way I hadn't thought about.
Is there a test I can do with pecans to see if they're raw. I mean, would they sprout or something?

I think pecans and walnuts are the exception. I have never heard of them sprouting. Almonds, yes. Sunflower seeds, yes. I've even sprouted flax seeds (accidentally - LOL - forgot about them, and saw them later all sprouted and moldy). Not sure about pine-nuts or brazils.
Would be fun to try an experiment: everyone get out your nuts and sprout!

This is so wonderful to know, I was under the impression, that NO cashew was ever raw, because of the way they had to process it.
but now I will have to try some truly RAW cashews, thanks for sprouting them to make sure they were raw, because they ARE RAW!!!

Now if I could only find a way to make sure other ones are raw! Like pecans. and walnuts.
If it sprouts it is alive.

Hi Codajess -
according to Herbert Shelton in Enzyme Nutrition, raw pecans will sprout.

Oh boy, I'll have to try to look back and see. It's been about 6-8 weeks. I'll let you know.

codajess, let them grow out a little longer if you really want to test it. Lots of things can give the illusion of "sprouting" from swelling up with water and sending out a little protrusion that is part of the physical makeup of the item. For instance some wild rice can look to be sprouted but it will never grown on, where some brown rice will actually sprout, then green up and form a plant.

This is weird. Last night I found a bag with loads of stuff from my local wholefood shop, must of been at least 6 months ago. And in their I found a new pack of cashews, simply labelled "Whole Cashews". After only seeing this thread a little earlier, I decided to give a few of them a sprout, and to my surprise.. they did! I couldn't beleive it, and it only took 12 hours to sprout before I saw the shoot coming out!
