i cant say what the current science is on the topic , i can only speak from personal experience . and from my experience i say cardio , and A # 1 for me is RUNNING RUNNING RUNNING ! ! ! its thee best exercise you can do . throw in situps to get abs and pushups to get shoulders , while you are getting your legs and heart running and you have a complete and simple training program . then its just a matter of your heart / determination / drive to get results . ITS ALWAYS A GOOD TIME FOR RUNNING .

Can't answer that either. I'd do both for maximum benefit. One gets the pumps going; the other strengthen bones. Personally, I don't run. I walk quite a bit; Turbo Jam; Urban Rebound. Works for me.

Cardio burns fat. Weight training builds muscle, and muscle burns more calories than fat, resting and at work.

Yep, what codajess said. :)
So the answer is.....do both.

Cardio burns fat for that instant and peaks while exercising and then falls rapidly (the fat burning and metabolism that is), while weight training strengthens muscles and the muscles will continually burn more calories. I think they are both equal.

just to add to the topic i can say that wrestlers and boxers have always ran to cut weight .

Hi, I am a personal trainer so i will answer this the best that i can. When u run, you are in an aerobic state, which is slow burning fat...yes, calories are used up and the longer you run, the more calories you will burn. Weight training builds muscle. The more muscle you have the more calories
you burn naturally by just the body trying to sustain its own muscle mass...and your metabolism increases, which in turn means you burn more
calories naturally.. so......cardio and weight training are BOTH key to losing fat and toning up!!! If you did just cardio, the body would eventually stop changing...the body adapts to exercise very easily..that is why you need to shock the body bi weekly by changing your routine! Bottom line is, is when you eat more calories than you burn, you will gain.....when you eat less than you burn, you will loose.......that simple

Hi!
I had another question, I am trying to gain a little weight, but I don't want to gain anymore fat, I want to gain muscle. How do I gain muscle with no fat, like less cardio and more weight training, or the same of both and just eat more? Any advice?
And how do you carry fat in different places if that is possible? Like for example, not your stomach! Like have no fat on you stomach and put it somewhere else? Cause I have gotten down so low in weight where there was no fat on my stomach at all, but I had to low of body fat and to low of weight, so how do I get the same effect with a good weight and goods bdoy fat?
Thank you!

Hi, what you need is more protein!!! I am not sure how to do it with raw, I have only been raw for about 4 months, but you need to find out. After a workout, you need to mend the body (working out creates tiny mico tears in the muscles and the healing aspect is what makes muscle stronger), by eating lots of protein..maybe thru nuts...read up on this.
Sounds like you need to do more weight training and maybe less cardio...what is your routine? I need to know more info. so I can see what you are doing/eating. What do you weigh? Your height? Let me know and when I get the chance I will respond.

Hi!
Thank you for helping me! I really apprecaite it!
Right now I weigh 116 at 5'8, my normal routine is about 20 minutes on cardio, using the gazelle, and then sometimes pilates, weight training with 10 pound weights, doing muscle exercises with my own body weight, push ups and butt exercises etc. dancing as fun (I don't like to count that as a workout), streching, and bike riding. So if I do cardio and eat more that wouldn't mean I would gain fat would it?
After I do a wokrout I eat a green drink with some Rainbow light protien powder as a transition food, and through the day I eat alot of fruit and salad, coconut oil, flax seed, some almond butter, nut milk, and sometimes tofu, and dried fruit. Tell me if you have anymore questions!
Thank you for the advice!

Hmm, maybe she is. I'm not sure. When I got her from the rescue, I think they just called her a siamese mix/diluted siamese. So that's what i've always called her.
I attached pictures of her kids when they were babies, and 3 of them when they were a little older. She had 3 gray ones (2 striped, 1 slate gray) 2 black (one sleek black, the other fluffy black that turned almost reddish-gray) and one tiger orange (!)

My body is very stubborn..smart. If I eat less than my Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR - amount of calories burned/day while at rest), my body thinks that I'm trying to starve it -> I actually gain weight. I have to eat above my BMR, and exercise more. Had to experiment to find my BMR, first. Then eat above that, and then exercise more. I also gain weight, loss muscle and store fat, if the deficit is too great. It's been an interesting journey. Best.

You little black cat almost looks exactly like one of my cats, her anme is Moon Beam, she's a little wild cat, and for some reason some of our cat's like getting "tough love", as my sister calls it, like getting sqeezed and stuff. They start purring!
MMM, I'm still trying to figure out how much cardio and how much weight training to do. Thank you for sharing your experience!

Hi!
I had another qustion, but I didn't want to start another thread on it cause I already have a few going. Anyway, I've heard that underweight people live longer, is this true? And if so, why? Is it because they have low bdoy fat and toxins get stored in fat? There for they would have less toxins?

Hi, thanks for giving me your stats. It looks to me like you are not eating enough. For your height, you do not weigh very much...I am confused why you are worried about gaining weight. Is this something you deal with in your life? How often are you working out? When you start to build muscle, you will probably weigh more. Are you aware that muscle weighs more than fat? Is this something that might scare you? Is it that you are happy with the way you look now and want to tone up? I am asking you these questions, because I am not sure exactly what you want from your body.
What I can see, is that you need to eat more if you want to build muscle.
If you don't, your body will start to feed of its own muscle mass and that will be a disaster. Please email me what is your true intension. If you want, email me directly..

Pink Halo!
Okay, I like the way my body looks except for my butt! It is tiny! My arms could use a little more, but not to much, but it is mostly my butt. I worked out to much and got down to 102 lbs, then I gained 14 pounds without hardly working out, cause I was so exhausted I needed a break. I bought this scale that is supposed to messure weight and body fat, and it say's my body fat is 16.4% or something, but what is weird is that a few weeks ago it said it was like 13 0r 14%, and I have been doing a lot of cardio, and not really gaining so why would it go up? The scale might be wack though. Anyway, I would NOT like to gain more fat. Also I lost my period and haven't gotten it back, still wondering if it will come back! I work out almost every day. Yes I am aware that muscle weighs more then fat, what kind of foods would I eat to gain muscle? I would like to tone up a little more and build more muscle. Sorry if this is kind of scattered!
I have always been thinner, except when I started only eating soy ice cream, and tortillas did I start gaining more and got up to 136-137, (this was before raw) so then I wanted to loose a few pounds, but I lost way more then a few, in the begining, I just wanted to loose the belly fat, but then I got more picky. Anyway, 102 lbs must have been way to low for me, probably cause I worked out to get down there so it was a lot of muscle I would think. I never thought I would get that skinny, I looked like a tooth pick, but I was looking at celebrity's thinking if they weigh that much then why can't I? But I know that is unhealthy now! I am just trying to find a healthy weight for me, I just don't trust what the charts say you are supposed to weigh, on the weight chart it says I should way about 130 or something, maybe that is healthy, I don't know. I just have to find out I guess.
So I guess I need to eat more huh? For a day like today I did 25-30 minutes of cardio, and then did about 15-30 minutes weihgt traing, with free weights, then I streched.
Thank you so much for your help and advice! If you have anymore questions or comments people let me know. Don't be afraid to be honest with me if I'm being unrealistic!
Oh, I tried to e-mail this to you, but the computer said you did not want to recieve e-mails, so I just put it on the forum. I hope that is okay!

Here is how my diet has been going in a day just to be more clear on what I eat:
After waking: a freshly sqeezed lemon
Then: A green smoothie with the following: One scoop Rice protien powder (as a trasition food), 1 banana, some hope mad almond milk, cucumber, lettuce, sprouts, and a little kale, a little agave, cacao nibs, and carob.
Then: 2 big strawberry's, a 1/2 apple, a 1/4-1/2 cup blueberry's, an orange, and a slice of thinly cut raw banana bread (sometimes I will have a banana too, but today they were not ripe enough)
Then: Then a meduim salad with sprouts, veggies, 1/4-1/2 avacado, and vinager agave dressing
Then: another salad, the same except a tablespoon flax seed added. And maybe a little tofu for transition, and a raw barely bagel.
Then some mroe fruit.
And through out the day inbetween meals I eat raw chocolate (maybe 1-2 peices now), some raw almond butter, or some raw cashew butter, and maybe some dat's or rasins. And maybe some raw almond milk.
I hope this helps more!

Pink Halo, can I get some advice too please? :) I am 5' 4" and currently weigh 120, and am a comfortable size 4 or a cheeky size 2 :D . When I was most happy with my body I weighed 112-114 and was a size 2 needing a belt, but not skinny, so I'd like to get back down there or thereabouts. I had 17% body fat at that time.
I just started working out again this week. I do 20 mins of running at mixed intensity, ie: 1 min at walk, 1 min at fast walk, 1 min at jog, 1 min at run, 1 min at flat out sprint, then repeat 4 times then a cool down walk. I follow this up with various weight training. My key areas for toning are my thighs/butt and my upper arms. Also my belly sticks out (bloating mainly, although when not bloated it is not flat, there is some fat there). The edges of my abs are becoming defined though. This is very annoying! I tend to snap back into shape quite quickly as I trained intensly in the past and the muscle memory seems good. :) I would love to be strong and lean. I don't care about the weight, just feeling like the body is solid and has no excess fat anywhere. Plus 99% of my clothes are size 2 and I want them to fit and not feel snug like they do now.
Food wise, I am training on an empty stomach first thing and following that with a green juice with hemp protein and spirulina, plus some ground cacao. Sometimes I add coconut oil too. Throughout the day I usually eat 1 avocado, a few cupful's of baby spinach, some baby toms, baby carrots, alfalfa sprouts, a good shaking of sprouted flax seeds over my salads. A couple of sheets of nori (veg sushi rolls), and around 2-4 oz of almonds. Plus a little almond butter, tahini or nut based dip. Oh, and a handful of sesame seeds here and there. I tend to graze. :) My fruit intake is under review due to blood sugar issues, but if I have enough almonds on hand I will eat 3 - 4 pieces of fruit with the almonds. I'm totally raw except for green tea (2-3 cups a day) and mint tea (1-2 cups).
Am I on the right track for a strong lean body? Do I need to shake up my work out or alter my diet? So far this week I have lost only a pound (working out every day and switching to raw vegan), but my body feels more toned. I'm aware that muscle weighs more than fat, so a steady weight loss with increased toning seems to be a good thing.
Many thanks!!!

Hi.
Toss Out Those Fat Counting Scales. They Are Not Accurate At All! You Should Not Be Concerning Yourself With Such Details!
Getting Yourself Involved With Fat Percentages Is A Dangerous Game....one Can Be Too Obsessed And That Is Very Unhealthy. It Sounds To Me, To Told Me To Be Honest, That You Are Going Into That Danger Zone. The Fact That You Lost Your Period Is A Huge Sign That You Are Too Low In Weight. Unless You Gain More, You Will Not Get Your Period. You Risk Screwing Up Your Hormones And Metabolism. Once You Start Gaining Some "healthy Weight" Back, You Should Stablize Again. Does Gaining Weight At This Point Scare You? I Know I Asked You That Before. It Is An Important Question. It Is Easy For Some To Hind Behind A "healthy" Way Of Eating..like Raw, To Continue An Eating Disorder. I Am Not Saying That This Is You, But I Do Not Know Enough About You To Tell. I Think You Exercise Too Much At This Point Because You Simply Do Not Eat Enough. I Can Tell You All Sorts Of Butt Exercises To Do To Tone And Add Muscle There, But Right Now, I Think You Need To Really Look At What You Are Doing With Your Body...be Honest. You Lost Your Period. If You Look Up Info Regarding This, You Will See That You Depriving Yourself. I Say This To You Only Out Of Concern..pls. Email Me At My Email Address If You Want.......p H

My thoughts on gaining weight are taken from what I've learned from Dr. Graham - you want to gain weight, but you don't want to gain fat - correct? Well, then you need to gain muscle, or build muscle. You do that by using resistance; either body weight or lifting weights. Good luck.

You need to stop focusing on the scale and start looking in the mirror. Numbers don't mean anything, what matters is if you look like you are healthy, not skin and bones.
Also, if you want to gain mass/muscle, lift heavier weights. You don't have enough testosterone in your body to get manly from heavy weights, plus it will make you hungrier.
To build your butt, do lots of squats, plie squats, lunges, and deadlifts. If you have any questions about working out a great place to get information is oxygen magazine's forum. Just ignore the nutritional advice. They get violent when you talk about eating raw.

I can only tell you what I have learned from working with an Olympic athlete as my personal trainer. Weights, plyometrics and high intensity aerobic work will burn the most fat. All three of these things use your fast twitch muscles which not only burns an abundance of fat while you train, but also most importantly for many hours after you train. In the past I myself thought, as many people think, you have to do very long aerobic/cardio sessions on a stairmaster, bike, etc...but the reality is, short intense burst of engergy have a much great affect on loosing weight and burning calories than a 60 minute session on an elyptical trainer or the likes because it uses those fast twitch muscles versus slow twitch. I was amazed when I changed my workouts how I spent less time in the gym with much better results. Try to read more about this type of training on line. I mix up my workouts to include about 10-20 minutes of very intense cardio, usually interval type training, 1 minute of very fast running on the treadmill and then 1 minute of average pace. I intermix this with my weight training and a couple of plyometric moves into a one hour circuit and I get everything done at one time. It is amazing how I can feel my blood in more oxyginated after these workouts and my energy is great! This type of training also helps make your muscles longer and leaner. Incorporating workout bands into the mix for various body parts is wonderful for that longer leaner look too. Good luck, enjoy your workouts!

Combine Jogging with eating less, that should do the work.
Other than that, feel free to do additional push ups/chin ups/sit ups/arm curls/bench press/squats. Persistance is key.

haha FREESPIRIT i use to be an oxygen board junkie been lifting heavy for years and downing protein till i realized maybe its best done on a raw diet but yea mention raw to them and they freak lol
and to star seriously lift heavy, one it takes years of dedication and serious supplemation to gain any serious amounts of muscle, you will only challenge your body by lifting heavier (im talking 6 reps or less) its harder than you think to gain muscle lifting for awhile, im definately not a hardgainer and im lucky to put on a pound now, now fat thats different-when you see "bulky" females its really fat over muscle, but when they lean out for competition they're super lean with 12-14% bf, your so lean now you shouldn't worry, and im the same height as you i look skinny when i hit 140ies i cant imagine being 120 id look deathly :p
