View Full Version : Stevia declared bad!

Now, I don't believe one bit of this. It's just the government trying to protect themselves and help "big agra." They declared stevia as unsafe and they say massive quantities to rats makes male rats produce less sperm. Their reasoning "in japan they don't drink as many soft drinks as we do in the US so if we put it in sodas there's no telling what will happen here." that's their logic...dumb! They also said Japan has been consuming it for years, hmm....just forcing us (as a society) to consume bleached sugar cane and chemicals to sweeten foods (since we all know not everyone will ever be raw, only a small percentage unfortunatley).

You're entitled to your opinion, but I won't use it and I see no need to use it. I don't use sweeteners.

Do you have an article or reference for this?
I'm not too hot on the aftertaste of stevia, but I just don't see someone using that much of it because it is so strong in such small amounts.

Well in my opinion stevia is really proccessed and I don't know how I feel about it! I've heard on this forum that it made this one person's hair fall out, so I have stopped using it and see what happens! The thread is call "Stevia and hair loss" I think.

Personally, I see no problem with male rats producing less sperm. :D ... and I don't recall being "forced" to use anything at all to sweeten my food. Individual humans make up "society". We're all free to choose and I see plenty of people choosing those lil pink and blue colored packets of something-or-other on restaurant tables. *shrug* what to do?

But I don't remember anyone else saying it happened to them on that thread - the person with the hair loss may have been an isolated case, and it may have had nothing to do with stevia.

I didn't say I used it. I don't care for it actually. I was just saying that this sweet natural plant is now considered "bad" to help keep the industries protected. No, we aren' "forced" but if they don't let stevia be used then the only sweetners in the foods people choose to eat is sugar and chemical aspartame. So yes, those that choose to eat those foods are "forced" to have those types of sweetners in them. Ok, I'm just going in circles feeling like I have to defend my post :( Hey, I just admitted how I feel!

heyyy it seems to me that tracey was just trying to show what seems to be the tendencies of our government. Now I could be wrong but this is what it seemed like. Plus the government's "logic" being much more illogical than logical just to protect money and agriculture. money money money, thats all this world is about any more. its sad. I don't think tracey was trying to defend Stevia or make you consume it, but rather show something about the government.

Yes, that's it. I'm just not good with words. I do my best. Thank you for clarifying Bristol.

I have no problem with stevia. There are products which are merely dried and ground so it's not a highly-processed food always.
The government is attacking it because of the strong influencial sugar lobby and the substitute sugar industry. Both have got the money. Same with the cattle lobby, the dairy lobby, etc. They pay, the politicians listen and pay back. Politics as usual.
That is not to say everything is good and safe, or that everything is a conspiracy, but, so far, there is no real evidence it is harmful and it's been used with no problems in other countries.
There are poisonous plants, and stevia is a plant; but no one has proved it to be a poisonous one or dangerous.
Best,
dreamrawalwz, this video makes your point well I think. Actually sugar cane has taken a back seat to corn! Who would have thought?

What about all the studies that have proved that Aspertame has serious and harmful side effects?? Gee, I wonder why they ignore those studies and create studies against a natural plant product.
Give me a break.
They created this study for the same reason the FDA won't approve Stevia for use in things like soft drinks. They have too much investment in Aspertame and Nutrasweet. :(

The only thing that would make sense is if they did the same study, but also gave a set of rats comparable amounts of nutrasweet, and another set of rats comparable amounts of aspertame, and another set a comparable amount of sugar. And they should be realistic amounts, taking into consideration that a rat is a heck of a lot smaller than a human. And see what happened to all 4 sets of rats! I would bet money that the aspertame rats would be in the worst shape. Not that I approve of animal studies. And this is the worst case scenario of an animal study, one that has no merit since it's not comparable to anything!
Talk about a biased study, eh?

we grow stevia in our gardens, and I just clip a leaf or two and use, no processing.
so, I'm not sure how you mean it's processed etc.
that's like saying something is bad, like peaches, only because you don't grow your own, and don't know how to find them fresh,
just because the government says it's bad AND processed, maybe it's the processing that makes it bad, not the plant itself,
I like it in shakes especially

The quicktime might have started playing and could be what you heard. Just scoll down and you'll see it. I have a mac but I had to push "play" for it to start. Even if you don't have a mac, one of the two should play.

That's why stevia is can only be sold as a suplement. Something similar happened with Ephedra. It could no longer be sold as an appetite suppressant supplement but is now marketed as ephedrine HCL, a drug! Mini thins had to change their name to (I can't remember what). It's now being sold as an asthma medication in the same convenience stores that sold mini thins. Talk about the FDA's influence! Now, they can regulate it!

We grow stevia in our greenhouse, and clip off a single leaf to use in juicing about 18 ounces of greens daily....it adds a slight, pleasant sweetness with no aftertaste.....maybe because it's fresh.
I can't imagine how much they must have given to the rat to alter it's sperm production !!

We grow stevia in our greenhouse, !!
Did you buy it as a plant or grow from seed. If the latter then where did you get the seed.
Thanks
