I'm on a search for the perfect raw almond butter (taste & consistency). Artisana is the 3rd one I've tried and the worst one. I found that it barely had any taste and seemed like they cooked all the good out of it. Wondering if anyone else had this experience?

gosh, I'm sorry you had that experience, I make my own, so it is yummy, and I KNOW it is raw, and what temp it is heated at, but I used to buy the one, that said raw, and it was sold in the refridgerated area of the HFS.

good luck.

It is definitely my goal to someday make things like almond butter. I think it's really great how so many of you do that. For now I need to keep it simple by buying a lot of pre-made items. I found one almond butter that's pretty acceptable and I'm trying a few more. Just love my apples with almond butter. :)

I think the key is to go with the companies that only grind it, not using any heat at all, which I guess Artisana does. Maranatha actually tastes better & fresher, but it's not raw.

RP:

How do you make your almond butter? Mine only seems to be of good texture when I add coconut oil, only the almonds isn't enough.

I know they are raw, but it has to taste as far from raw as any almond butter I ever tried. Just does not have that same taste as the others-though I actually barely detected much of a taste. Trying Rejuvenative or Sweetwater Market next.

I love Rejuvenative but can't bring myself to pay for it most of the time.

I have tried making my own a couple of times with my Vita-Mix and failed miserably!!!

Maranatha has at least two different kinds -- one says it is creamy and raw, the other creamy and roasted. They also have organic and non-organic. I don't mind the taste, and when I was a SAD eater, I consumed jars of peanut butter. I actually don't mind this almond butter.

I have ordered from a certain company repeatedly and always received excellent quality raw almond butter.

Hi Teri -

which company are you referring to that you had success with?

veganman, I only order from www.glaserorganicfarms.com (http://www.glaserorganicfarms.com/) for two reasons. 1/ They only sell raw organic products. 2/ They are close enough to my home that UPS ground delivers my orders the next day.

I would really recommend you find a similar company in your area. One member here who lives in NY started to order a highly perishable dish from FL and got upset because UPS wanted to charge over $100 shipping. This dish only had a 24 hour refrigerated life. Raw almond butter is not that perishable. It just helps to have a place where you can get whatever you want.

Raw Truth and Rawkinlocs are in CA and probably know of several companies to recommend. Also if you are near a Wild Oats or Whole Foods they usually have truly raw almond butter in the refrigerator section next to produce.

Hope this helps,
Teri S

Have you tried Woodstock Farms? That's the only kind I can get around here and it tastes really raw to me. It's the only kind I've tried though.

About shipping; when something is shipped durring summer, doesn't anyone worry about the temperature of the truck?

Thanks Doe,

I just checked out that site. I live 3 hours from there. There isn't much variety around here in the way of organics. Some nuts and seeds, some produce, an excellent non-organic produce shop but that's about it besides the grocery stores and a lot of their organics look old most of the time - not always though. My guess is that you've never gotten anything wilted or that had signs of heat damage from there. As I said in my previous post, I'm a little concerned about heat damage durring shipping. Are UPS trucks climate controlled?

Maranatha says their almond butter is Raw on the container, but it really isn't. Here's a few threads on that.

I was wondering if the raw almond butter we purchase is made from soaked almonds. Does this almond butter then have the enzyme inhibitors in them if they are only ground raw without soaking/sprouting? If you make your own you know for sure what you're getting but other wise...?

Am I thinking too much?

The companies will tell you what process they use if you ask. Like Sweetwater has 2 different kinds-one soaked & one that isn't.

Thanks GilmoreGirl! I'll inquire. Trader Joe's has a raw almond butter but I don't know the source for their private labeling...
