A co-worker of mine is keeping an abandoned kitten and is looking for a home for it so...I said I could take it. I had to convince my mom lol, but she's ok with it. Since it's only 6 weeks it's very young and very impressionable so I'd like to start it's life with different food choices other than kibbles. How young can I start feeding it raw pieces of meat? It's teething still and has those tiny points for teeth so I'm not sure how good they are for eating raw. Any suggestions or ideas? At this point they are feeding her packets of food with a lot of gravy and putting the dry food in water to make it soft. They say she isn't drinking much, but they think she's getting liquid through the gravy.

She can start eating raw as soon as she is off of mother's milk. Feed her mostly boneless at first but in a couple weeks she should be able to handle chicken bones just fine. Cat's were designed to start eating raw meat right away so she'll be just fine, it is actually easier to start kittens on raw than is to start older cats. She sounds adorable!

Thanks. I know she's not on the mother's milk now or at least for the past two weeks, is that bad? Since they took it from an abandoned barn (the other owners kept the older cat, but were too busy to keep the kittens and her brother was attacked by a fox one night). Should I feed her a formula of sort or it'll be best to give her raw instead when I first get her (this week i think). I'll post a picture once I get one! I don't even know what she looks like and I need to think of a name....anyone have any suggestions?!

If you dont have to feed her bones i would NOT.
I used to feed my cats chicken bones/meat; but one day a bone got caught in her mouth and it was at such a angel i could NOT get it out.
She about tore her face off with her nails trying to get it out!
I had to tape her legs together to get her to the vet.
He told me NEVER to give the chicken bones, because they splinter to easily.

I asked "but it was what they ate in the wild" and he said "some" but "some" also die because of this. If you want to feed her raw meat fin but no more bones"

Just thought I would share my experience.

She now eats dry food.

You should probably stick to kitten formula for now, but try giving her small pieces of meat. As she gets older, you'll be able to give her mostly meat. If you're worried about bones getting stuck in her throat, you can give her boneless meat and supplement with bone meal. There's a lot of info about raw cat diets online, but that should be good to get you started. :)

feeding her bones is how she gets calcium, if you don't feed her the bones then you might need to give her bone dust that you can get from the butcher, or maybe yogurt. I feed my animals raw and they love it, bones and all ;)
