It's just a sorta sweet lettuce. I think it's related to Boston lettuce. I've gotten at Winn-Dixie and Walmart SuperCenter in the past, and I've also grown it, too. It's yummy.

I love butter lettuce!!! I buy the one in the plastic container with the roots still attached so it stays fresher longer. Look in the lettuce area of the store... sometimes they put it next to the bagged lettuce, and other times it's with the other varieties. It is a fragile lettuce, gets bruised easy. But that is why it's called butter lettuce, cuz it's thicker, creamier, and sweeter than other lettuce's. It's my kids favorite! ;)

What would you serve it with? I am very particular about lettuce and what goes with it (like I don't like salsa with romaine lettuce, only green leaf). I am curious what kind of veggies/dressing you would use.
I have been curious to try butter lettuce, but have shyed away from it because it looks a lot like iceberg (which I have been told has no nutrition whatsoever - that the greener the better for nutrition). Any ideas about nutriets in butter lettuce?
Thanks! Paula

I like Butter Lettuce because it's very thick and very flexible. So it's an excellent alternative to bread and tortillas. I guess I should also say pita bread because that's what I rolled my hummus up in last night.
Here's a link to the packaged one that was mentioned:

You can also find it in the section with all the other lettuces...

Someone on this board mentioned scooping mashed bananas with cinnamon into butter lettuce leaves and rolling it up. I tried it and ate it several times for breakfast last week-it is YUM!
Marie- I LOVE your pic!

I looked up the nutritional info on both butter lettuce and iceberg. I think you have to be a scientist to decipher the data; I sure couldn't figure it out.
If you're at all interested, here 'tis:
