Hello! :D
I have a question about b12 & nori sheets. When I did a search, I read that instead of taking b12 vitamins, I could get them from nori sheets. I was wondering how many would I have to eat to get an adequate supply of b12? Do others think it would be safer for me to suppliment instead?
Thanks for the responses!!

I would like to know this too. I've read you are more prone to mosquito bites if you don't have enough B12 and now I believe it's true. We went on our first camping trip this weekend and ds (who's vegetarian) and I got eaten up and no one else got bit. Everyone else was eating hamburgers. :rolleyes:

whoa! that is news to me. I didn't know we are more prone to mosquito bites, when we're b12 deficient!! :eek:
If I could get an adequate supply from nori, it would the greatest news ever! hehe. Hope someone will have some answers. :D For some reason, I'm anti-suppliments. :rolleyes:

B12 is a bit of a hit and miss. It's in many foods, but is removed when they are cleaned/sterilized/sprayed. It's all created by microorganisms. If they can't live to do their job there is no B12.
A few years ago it was widely published that sea veggies had an analogue B12 that was not useful to humans, but some companies are having theirs tested (no nori that I know of) and are getting permission from the FDA to say they have human active B12.
So it's a bit of a hard one to answer.

mrsalf97;
AHA! Finally the answer to why I was not getting bitten when I was pregnant! It was a mosquito-ridden summer for sure, and everyone was scratching. I hardly noticed them, UNTIL I gave birth at the end of July. Then the critters REALLY made up for lost time on me. I always wondered. Thought it was some hormonal thing. :) I was taking B12 supplements!
konmai;
I haven't read any data on B12 in Nori sheets, but just reading your post made my stomach churn a little. I have been scared of Nori sheets since I was told that there are little tiny sea animals caught in it and in fact all seaweeds. That could very well be your source of B12. YUKKKKKK! :eek:
If a person is truly trying to cut all animal products from the diet, this is a big concern. I haven't been able to make a sushi since I heard that. Just think, the seaweed is all ground up and made into a nice sterile-looking sheet. But how are they EVER going to check that it is sea-horse baby-free? etc. :confused:
Please, someone, reassure me on this. I will not eat it with that risk. Where else will I get the fishy taste in some of the raw recipes, not to mention the nutrients!

:cool: ok. i didn't know all that about nori sheets. i should be more careful w/ my questions as I am an avid sushi lover. =)
I guess I'll just find me some suppliments for now to be on the safe side. 25mcg of b12 right?
hehe...I put everything into nori sheets. :rolleyes:

I wouldn't bank on sea veggies as sources of B12 until some more research is done into it. Right now it seems as though supplementation is safest.

I am still waiting to hear back on this. I do not want to eat sea creatures in my seaweed. Can anyone clarify this?

Well if you don't want to eat sea critters, then you probably shouldn't eat seaweed. While I'm sure that harvesting companies do their best to seperate the seaweed from the sea creatures, it's probably inevitable that some slip in and get ground up with the nori itself. Everyone inadvertently eats *some* animals, even if they're microscopic ones or insect eggs that aren't visible to the naked eye.

This has probably been talked about before (and a little offtopic) but isn't the ultimate source for B12 wheatgrass? Or should I just say grass? Grass is everywhere and edible by all animals so that surely explains why we can always get B12 from animal sources.

Wheatgrass has 1 mcg. of B-12 in it
Laver has 61% DV B-12
Dulse has 23% DV B-12
Kelp has 9% DV B-12
Wakame I know is loaded but now sure of the exact percent and I am not sure on how much nori has either.

Nope, actually it doesn't. B12 is produced by bacteria in the digestive tracts of most animals. In humans, those bacteria are too low in our digestive tracts for us to absorb much (or any) of the B12 that's produced.

Sorry if this is a really personal question for anyone, but why are b12 shots taken instead of taking the supplements?
I'm still waiting for some more info. on this. :cool: It's weird, but if it's possible, I'd like to not take b12 supplements. I'm kind of anti any medication. The lowest amount of b12 I've seen as supplements around my area is 100 mcg which would last me a month! I've read only 25mcg a week is necessary, & our body can store it? :confused: The cheapest supplement I found was 500 mcg!!! omg...that would last me 5 months. :eek:

Hey, I don't think this will answer your question.....
I personally have choose not to supplement or take shots in the time being. I eat alot of seaweeds and drink wheatgrass despite what some studies/articles have claimed saying that this is not enough. I know that a lack of B-12 can be extremly serious. So not supplementing is my chose. I plan on getting a check up yearly just to make sure.
My father and my grandmother (recently passed) take/took B-12 shots. They swear by them and they give them a boost in energy. They have a perscription and they give themselves the shots at home.
I used to take a B-12 supplement, but what it did for me I am not sure. I was not very in tuned with my body back then I don't think.
