Hello all,

I've been high raw for about 2 months, and it has been very easy for me because I love all raw foods that I make or buy. I believe in raw foods very much and really really want my family to benefit from them. But their taste buds are very different from mine (it has always been like that all my life) and with every raw food I buy from the store or make myself, they don't seem to be crazy about like I am. I made the date nut torte and they said that they were expecting a torte-like texture. They all like the SAD pastry texture that I don't think is possible w/raw food. I also made the chocolate cream pie http://www.rawfoodtalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=13933 that everyone here is raving about and they didn't care for it.

Is there any raw recipes (desserts) that tastes like the SAD ones? They just can't adjust to the change of texture. My sister really likes the doughy texture of breads. My brother really likes the texture of pastry.

Thanks in advance.

I make raw chocolate that tastes incredible! Well, I think so and everyone who trys it whether raw or not loves it and always comes back for more!

I put tahini or almond butter
Coconut oil
Carob
Raw cacoa nibs (chocolate beans, you can also just use carob)
Vanilla
Agave
Blend it up in a food proccesser and pat down in a rubber lid or make squares! Put in freezer or fridge and enjoy!

I hope you get something out of this!

Thanks for replying and the recipe, Startootsie. I really appreciate it. I'll definitely give this a try. I made the Easter chocolate here that was also raved by everyone here. But my family still didn't care for them. Sigh... They are EXTREMELY difficult to please. And, I'm EXTREMELY easy to please w/raw foods. Two extremes!

Alissa's date nut torte, served with bananas...

Thanks for your suggestion, Oceana. I did make this and they didn't care for them. Incredible, right? Sounds like everyone here that has tried it liked it.

my husband (very SAD) loves the candy balls. I make mine this way:

10 dates (unsoaked)
20 nuts (pecans or walnuts) (unsoaked)

place in the food processor until mixed good

roll into small balls

then roll in dried shredded cocunut

I like mine to chill in the fridge for a little bit

Makes about 10 mini balls, adjust recipe to get the amount of balls you want.

Here is an easy crepe recipe that, in my experience, never fails to please even the most staunch SADer.

It may help if you don't tell them it is a "crepe" so that they won't compare it to the crepes they are familiar with but will evaluate it on its own merits. I let the crepe sit with the sauce on top long enough to completely soften the banana leather, so it is not really crepe-like anyway.

I make the banana leather with an American Harvest dehydrator, so the quantity of banana puree is for one fruit leather tray.

BANANA CREPES WITH WALNUT CREAM FILLING AND RASPBERRY SAUCE serves 3

3 pieces banana leather
Walnut Cream
Raspberry Sauce

Divide walnut cream between three banana “crepes”, spooning into center of each. Fold each side over, forming a triangle shaped packet (not a roll), and flatten slightly, distributing cream evenly throughout packet. Spoon raspberry sauce over, covering crepe completely.
Allow to sit at least one hour to soften crepe. Serve.

Banana Leather

Enough ripe bananas to make 2 cups of puree (approx 3)

Put bananas in blender and puree until smooth. Pour onto dehydrater tray. Dehydrate until firm (not hard). Cut into three equal portions.

Walnut Cream

1 ½ cups walnuts
½ cup water
1 tsp vanilla extract
Sweetener to taste (e.g. SteviaPlus)

Grind walnuts finely in coffee grinder.* Transfer to blender. Add vanilla, sweetener and water and blend immediately, until smooth and fluffy.

Raspberry Sauce

1 bag Trader Joe’s frozen raspberries, defrosted
Sweetener to taste

Mix raspberries and sweetener together, mashing raspberries as you stir.

*I don't have a vitamix so in order to get the fluffiest walnut cream I have to pre-grind the walnuts in a coffee grinder. You may not have to do this with a Vitamix.

I would also suggest Raw Priestess' brownies with a thick layer of chocolate icing on top (I make a simple icing with 1/4 cup light agave, 2-3 soft dates, and a whole lot of cocoa powder. There are other recipes on this site too). These are also fool proof I'd say!

Linda,

The thing is, your tastebuds are "cleaner" and so you can sort of appreciate the flavors more. My eldest child (15-year old son) doesn't like ANY of my prepared raw recipes. Many others rave about them, but he always says something tastes weird or the texture is weird, etc. But I also realize that my son is still eating a lot of SAD food and I think he has just subconsciously told himself that anything raw short of fruits and veggies is gonna taste weird.

My other kids are a bit more open and accepting of various things (they all have their favorites and things they don't quite care for) but he is my biggest challenge.

Also, keep in mind that while a LOT of raw desserts and other dishes may come very close to SAD versions, oftentimes to some SAD eaters these foods will not be satisfactory to them. It's hard to get raw recipes, especially pastries, to be dead ringers to their SAD counterparts. Flavor might be dead on but the texture will be different or vice-versa. I notice that if I eat cooked food, raw recipes don't taste that appealing to me. But if I have been eating SIMPLE raw for a little while and then indulge in a raw recipe, it tastes heavenly!

So what you might want to do is, rather than introducing a raw "replica" of a SAD dessert to your family members, just introduce a great-tasting NEW dessert and call it something that isn't associated with a SAD recipe name...for example, if you were to make RawPriestess' (SUPER YUMMY) brownies...don't present them to your family members as brownies because their expectations will be something different. But rather present them as "Chocolate-Nutty Chewies" or something like that and let THEM say, "Hey, these aren't half-bad...kinda remind me of brownies!"

That might work better with some people although some...many actually, SAD eaters are very receptive to RAW "replica" dishes and will actually like/love them...but for those with pickier tastes, you might have to resort to the suggestion I gave.

You might want to have your family try this chocolate pudding recipe. It calls for some raw cacao powder and some maple syrup- which you may or may not eat, but I'm sure your family would enjoy.

2 cups young coconut meat
1/2-1 c. young coconut water (depending on the thickness you want)
1/2 c. cocoa powder (either the one from Natures First Law, or Green&Blacks vegan cocoa powder)
1/2 c. maple syrup (you can do half maple syrup, half agave)
1 T. vanilla extract
1/4 t. sea salt

Blend everything together in a Vita Mix or high speed blender until completely smooth.

For more recipes, (Chocolate-Orange Tart, Raspberry Tart etc), visit me at www.Greenchefs.tv under the section 'Some Like It Raw'. The website should be back up today sometime...

Oh Rawkinlocs, can I hug you or kiss you? Gosh, what you said helped me sooooooooooooooooo much!!!! I guess subconsciously, I felt kind of bad that my family is not loving my raw food, even the most famous ones here like date nut torte and chocolate cream pie. I so much want them to eat well. In the last 2 months, I bought more than 10 raw recipe books, mainly for making dishes for THEM, not for myself, as I like very very simple foods like plain durian for dessert. What you said about me having 'cleaner' taste buds and how your 15 year old son is also very similar makes me feel so much better, and that it is not 'my' food preparation. I live with my brother, and he knows that I only eat really really healthy food (even prior to raw). He even said to me that he only likes to eat junk foods. He already associates healthy food with not tasting well. It's very discouraging to me. I care for him so much and want him to be healthier.

Your technique sounds excellent; I love 'chocolate nutty chewies'! I will need to come up with so many names in the next few months.

Thanks so much again Rawkinlocs. You are so kind to take the time to write so much good information, like always. You are an angel. :p

THank you Vanessa, for replying and taking the time to write your recipe. I will try your recipe and let you know the result. I made faith's chocolate cream pie (just the filling not the crust) http://www.rawfoodtalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=13933 and presented to my brother as pudding. He didn't even want to try it because he thought it didn't look like pudding.

Hi Faithfully FIT,

THanks for all of your suggestions. I have collected all of the most famous desserts from this forum, including the ones you've suggested. I haven't made the cinnamon rolls for the same reason that you haven't, but it's on my list. Is the carrot cake and blueberry pie from Alissa's book? can you share your cookie recipe? I love the banana ice cream too, but my brother doesn't like bananas.
