View Full Version : Can anyone recommend a thermometer in UK?

I have a L'Equip dehydrator and am convinced that I'm not using it at the right temperature, as with this model you have to estimate where 105 degrees, etc, are!!
A lot of threads say 'the food was warm from the dehydrator' - well my food is never warm when it comes out and sometimes takes ages to dehydrate to the right consistency. I therefore think that I am using too low a temperature.
I live in England and have looked on some websites but a lot of the food thermometers here don't go down low enough as obviously they are for 'hot' ovens.
Has anyone got any recommendations? I don't mind getting one from the US if shipping isn't too much. I'm looking for one in Fahrenheit degrees.
Thanks.
Tracy
Have a look in Robert Dyas, Tracy. I saw some in there earlier in the year. They look similar to the one I have which either hangs or stands on the oven shelf.
Mine is years old so still has F temperatures and starts low enough -- not sure how the new ones are marked, but they're inexpensive and it's worth a look.
I use mine all the time in my ordinary oven to keep it low enough to use as a dehydrator, till I manage to get one, a dehydrator, I mean.

I got mine in a catering suppliers but I can not see a brand name on it. It is great because it is digital and has a probe that I leave in and can read it from outside so I do not have to open the unit.

English Tracey - Can't help you out, but I got a L'Equip Dehydrator in January without knowing you couldn't set the temperature on it and only used it once because of this, and also the horrid circle in the middle of each tray and having to lift up all trays above it if you want to access the lower trays. I got the L'Equip Dehydrator in the first place because it was the cheapest, even at £130! But a few weeks ago I thought about dehydrating again and decided to just pay for the best (the Excaliber). All 3 problems listed above are no problem and the machine just looks quality too and of course you can determine exact temperature. If you have the money I would go for an Excaliber, ever since I got one to replace the L'Equip I have been dehydrating a lot more because its so easy to use. BUT if you can get the Excaliber going then good luck to you!

I also replaced my L'Equip with an excaliber but I was dissapointed.
My crackers have not been as nice since. I just can not seem to get them to the right chrispness.
There is too much play in my temp setting button and there is no way that I can get the exact temp without monitoring it and adjusting it using the trermometer.
There is no on/off switch so that when I have the right setting I can just leave it. The only way to turn it off is to turn the temp down to zero and then I have lost all my adjustments.
The switche is at the back of the unit so I have to jump up on the work top to read it. Luckilly for me I am still agile or I would be lost.
I am never going to be able to build it in to my new kitchen because of the location of the switch.
I think that they could make a lot of design improvements.
I can see by the pictures on the internet that some have 2 switches so maybe the other is an on/off switch but that is not on mine even though mine is only a few months old. I did not know that I was getting an inferior model whan I ordered it. I ordered the best one that UK Juicers had and this was what I got.
OK, Rant Over.
