Hello,
I have been on a major garlic kick. I have been eating a lot of garlic. My body has been craving it. My familt has been hinting that I smell so I cut it back to only 1 or 2 cloves a day, but they are still saying I smell and can't tolerate it.
I don't smell anything and I LOVE my garlic. I have to work with the public and its important that I don't smell, but I don't want to stop giving my body what it wants. So what to do? Does anyone know of a good substitute for garlic that won't have me smelling? Does anyone know why my body wants this garlic so much?
I thought it may be because maybe I have parasites. Or maybe because I have always had blood pressure issues, but Im not sure.
Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated.
I am not taking the thought of giving up my garlic very well. I quit for a few days and I smelled fine, but I had such a feeling of need for the garlic.

This happened with my mom. She was taking huge amounts of garlic capsules. We kept telling her about the odor but she didn't believe us. Until she went into the room of the class (adults) she was teaching. The class had moved their chairs back some. As the time went on, they kept moving back until they were all at the back of the class. So she asked them what was going on. They didn't want to tell her, but finally someone did. She then switched to odorless supplements but it still took a few days to get out of her system.
If everyone in the family is eating garlic, they won't notice the odor. Others might, but they won't. I hate the taste of garlic and if I eat too much of it, it causes stomach pain.
You might try eating plenty of parsley and maybe switching to a milder garlic like elephant garlic.

we smell like the food we eat.
and garlic is especially potent.
I have a friend who is in special ops. I can always tell when she is going on a mission, and where she is going by what food she eats, they can only eat the food from the country they are going to, and no deoderant perfumes or soaps for several days before they go, because the scent of Americans is so strong, with all the chemical perfumes, they can be smelled a mile away.
I find this very interesting.
and it has gotten alot of Americans spotted when they weren't supposed to be, by their "American" smell, clothes are another dead give-away, no body in the entire world dresses like Americans. LOL
we are a funny lot.

In another thread here somone mentioned that she was having some garlic each day and she smelled so she experimented by actually upping her intake a great deal more and she said that the more garlic she ate, the less she stank. I don't know if this is true for everyine but you might try it since you already smell, aparently :D . What have you got to lose?

How are you taking in all this garlic? Are you juicing it? Whatever the case, whenever you eat/drink garlic, ALSO eat/juice parsley. I have a book that says that there's something in the parsley that neutralizes the smell that the garlic will give off in your body. So...garlic? Parsley. Every time.
Good luck!

Shmoopie is right, parsley helps cut down the odor a bit.
I had a time when I craved onions - I had onions by the pound, in salad, as salad, just onions onions and onions. And also a lot of garlic.
It helped me a lot with my colon inflammation, I believe. Then suddenly onions and garlic lost their attraction and now I eat them in moderation. But when I ate, I knew I stank a bit... But my body craved it and I believed there must be a reason behind that - there was.
So, my advice: Try to eat lots of parsley with your garlic and don't stop listening to your body ;)

Chlorophyl helps take odor away Parsley contains a high amount.
The age & how garlic is prepped will effect the odor you emit as well. Even as far as sliced vs crushed ( the crushed will have you emit a stronger odor) It is the same concept w/ strong onions. A razor sharp knife will keep you from crying, because the dull ones tend to crush the onion.
I remember the strong aroma getting off a plane in Korea . It's the number one staple there. Going through Gilroy CA reminds me of it. Here close to the Appalachians they have the Ramp that is like a combo of a leek & garlic. All the wives tales and discord over this wonderful veg's aroma. That's hillbilly or Redneck food is the modern thought . I do not understand. These are the same folks that work & live near Chemical Plants & Coal processing plants.
My advice would be to take in lots of greens, even the algaes. listen to your body it wants this food for a reason. I think over the course the smell will wear off. I love garlic & Kimchi and I get comments not so much that the smell is bad, just different.
Funny we're more accepting of smelling like artf. chemical combo's and have issues w/ foods smells that promote health.
I wish you luck!!

Peter Ragner eats up to 20 cloves of garlic a day! He says that he has no smell of garlic at all. But obviously he leads an extremely toxin free life. I have heard that the garlic just pushes toxins to the surface. Once you are all cleaned out you won't smell anymore.

Try eating some parsley after you eat your garlic. I've heard that helps!!!

First of all, thanks for making me laugh out loud today. I needed it!
I don't know why, but your post filled me with GLEE! :D :D :D
Anyway.. good advice from everyone. My two cents is that if your body is craving garlic... eat it. Let everyone else buy a mask.
The parsley and other chlorophyll plants will help... but your body apparently needs it so I say go for it!

Iloverawfoods,
That's happened to me before but I noticed it myself when I went to wash my laundry. I had had kim chee (sp), from a recipe here, but I used elephant garlic instead of regular garlic. When I chopped it, I noticed it was MUCH more "aromatic" than garlic. I used it along with red onion. I LOVED the taste and when it was done, I ate it all within about 3 days (I think I craved the salt). It was about 2 heads worth of cabbage. I never smelled anything myself, BUT, when I went to do my laundry, I smelt this horrible smell coming from the hamper... It was the shirt I had worn the week before! It smelled like horrible BO but not quite the same. No one told me either, out of politeness I'm sure, but I wish they had. I'll still make it the same way, I just won't eat as much at one time.
By the way, does anyone know exactly what elephant garlic is? I can't seem to find it on the web.

Perhaps what you bought wasn't really elephant garlic? It is more mild than regular garlic and perhaps something a real garlic lover wouldn't like. Here's a link:

Thanks Juliebove,
Perhaps it was bitter? It was strong and almost hot to the taste but not brown. It did look like a very large garlic though.

You can soak your garlic cloves in lemon juice or apple cider vinegar for 24-48 hours, the smell should all but vanish. :)
