View Full Version : Soy Milk
I'd like to make my own soy milk, has anyone tried this, or is there a very good reason why I should avoid the soybean?
I'm interested in the high quality proteins, isoflavones and B-vitamin to name a few.
I don't read a lot of opinions about soy milk in the raw food communities.
I'd be grateful for anyone to share their opinions.

I have never made Soy milk before but found a site with a recipe on it. Maybe this would help. They say to add sugar, which is processed, for sweetness but I always use honey or Stevia (a herb). I hope this helps. I prefer Almond Milk myself.

Dr. Tel-Oren had a lecture about soy a few weeks back and he advised against eating soy since it was really never meant to be consumed, it wasn't until recently that people began using it. Also, there is virtually no soy left in the world that hasn't been genetically modified or hasn't crossbreeded with genetically modified soy. The same is true with corn, wheat, and potatoes. Ecopolitan, in turn, completely avoids soy, corn, wheat, and potatoes.

For the record, soy milk is not made with raw soy beans...neither is tofu. YOu boil the beans, and it is a processed drink. Some, who don't have issue with soy, (I don't eat it due to its estrogenic quality---I have PCOS & the osoflavones are a no-no) and are able to find non GMO soy beans, make Tempeh, which is cooked, but later fermented, as is miso, so some consider it a live food. Thing is, you have to cook tempeh to eat it, so shucks, I guess that isn't an idea, sorry. The Farm cookbooks have info on this if you want a simple recipe.
Here is my two cents Sam, I am not a total vegan, I will consume some raw dairy and the occasional egg. But, I don't believe animal products are the best sort of protein. You can get a balanced protein from fruits and veggies & sprouts without doing the animal thing. And soy isn't the answer for me, as I mentioned above. Plus, most soy in this country is GMO, and there is no way of telling if it is or isn't because of the govts labeling system.
I am a nutritionist, and like you, have done a lot of personal research on this topic..I grew up a vegetarian, eating tofu and such. Today, there is so much so much junk food containing soy out there, and so many junk food companies (such as the low carb cardboard food people, lol:) ) are touting soy as the ultimate food, I really don't trust it anymore. In Asia, (where the US soy supporters say people eat soy all the time,) the really don't: Soy and soy products are used as condiments, and make up less then 20% of thier diet. It is never given to children, as the Asians recognise it's hormonal affects. (note: in the US people are beginning to see the digestive problems it causes babies and are no longer recommending soy based formulas.) I also heard that in Asia, soy is typically served in a tea that elderly people drink...I think this is interesting actually, perhaps they are taking it for its hormonal affect afterall?
Anway, you can get a really great source of b-vitamins from nutritional yeast, and protein from your produce and sprouted grains...so long as you are eating a balanced diet...Just my thoughts...

Thank you for the information, I've learned a lot from your opinions here.
Pregnant Women Should Not Eat Soy Products - In-utero exposure to genistein increases the incidence of breast tumors ...
Pregnancy was exactly the reason why I was considering it, I really appreciate this, I've read a lot of negative things but haven't come across anything in relation to pregnancy.
I prefer Almond Milk myself.
I think that's what I'll end up preferring also.
there is virtually no soy left in the world that hasn't been genetically modified or hasn't crossbreeded with genetically modified soy
This is a very important part of the puzzle. I take such particular care with the foods I chose. Any nutritional benefits would be void anyway
For the record, soy milk is not made with raw soy beans
Some of the recipes I'd read, I thought it was the same as almond milk, just soaking the beans, vitamising and straining.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts, nutritional yeast is also a source of B12 vitamins, I've been a little concerned with where to get my B12 other than sea vegetables, and alfalfa, soy beans seem to be another great source. Alissa's tuna dip is looking more like an important staple meal.
Thank you for your opinions :)

Soybeans have been used for thousands of years in Chinese and Japanese cultures. Not only the miso pastes have been made, but also they have been eating tofu (processed it is!) for many centuries.
If there is no GM soybeans left, how can they sell the beans/tofu as organically grown?

Organic just means they didn't use chemical fertilizers on it. It doesn't mean it wasn't genetically modified. I only consume soy that's marked non-GMO.
I wonder how someone can say soy was never meant to be eaten... They can read God's mind? Someone might say artichokes were never meant to be eaten but someone found a way to do just that.
Lots of folks are giving up soy milk and tofu but not their nama shoyu or miso.
I've said it before, no bean on this planet could survive the scrutiny the poor little soy bean is going through. As you say Tracy, it's been consumed for centuries in it's many incarnations.
If consuming soy during pregnancy has been shown to cause breast cancer there would be a lot of cancerous women in Asia. However, that didn't happen til we gave them Micky D.
Food is medicine. Any food has healing/harming qualities depending on the individual. For some folks whose bodies don't need the phytoestrogens soy is a bad product. For those of us who DO need it, it's a blessing. I now have regular periods and BOOBS!! Before soy, I had the figure of a 10 year old boy... I don't eat much. Miso. Nama Shoyu. A little Silk creamer in my Teeccino...
There are still doctors swearing that pregnant women shouldn't eat shellfish but Scandanavian women use shellfish as a staple and have no problems with their children. Shellfish during pregnancy gave us the Vikings. Dem some big strong dudes...

Hi! I forgot this in my post, so I figured I'd add it. The key with consuming soy, if one chooses to do so, is to make sure it is fermented. If fermented, as in miso, tempeh, nama shoyu, or that hot tea like drink I mentioned, it is not supposed to have the digestive damage that unfermented soy has. That was the secret that the Asian cultures learned of how to eat it without issue...
...but for people who can't have the estrogen, like me, I try and pass on it.
Just an additional 2 cents.
