How do you open a coconut?

My newness is going to show with this question...

I would love to purchase the coconuts I see in the store, but I have no idea how to open them without using a hammer. That would waste the milk that I should be drinking. Also how do you separate the outer shell from the inner meat?

Thanks for asking that question... I was wondering too! Turns out that's how I opened mine anyhow...except for wrapping the towel around it which I will definitely do from now on...lol.
