So many fruits, so little time. LOL

Dragggon and I have decided to eat at least one new fruit a week, or at least one that we don't eat too often.

so, this week was mango. We have bought mangos before, and they were always not too good to us, kind of hard or way too squishy, and they tasted like turpentine, but we say them already peeled and pitted at Costco, so decided to buy the 2 pound container and try them.

they are delicious. Just like the pineapple that we buy so often, if they are al ready peeled and pitted or cleaned up, then they seem to be so much better, yes they are way more expensive this way, but you can see what you are getting, and cut just a bit off each piece, or take the whole container with you, I ate some before I even got home from the store, which is over an hour away. LOL

So, what should we try next?

we love and eat often
oranges
bananas
strawberries
raspberries
blackberries
blueberries
huckleberries
logan berries
salmon berries
marion berries
plantains
finger bananas
clementine
star fruit
satsumas
tangerines
tangelos
peaches
apricots
apples of all kinds
cantaloup
honeydew
watermelon (several kinds - but snake is the best)
pepinos (Mexican melons)
grapes (all kinds)
kiwis (several kinds)
grapefruit
key limes
limes
lemons
squashes ( all kinds)
cucumber
tomatoes
cherimoya
avocado
cocoa
durian
figs
kumquats
quince
lye Chee
papaya
pear
Asian apple pear
passion fruit
pau pau's
nectarines
cactus
cherries (several kinds)
and all nuts
and lots of dried fruits too
so any ideas on what to try next???

and what have you tried lately???

and do you love or hate them???
we love mangos NOW!!!

This is my kind of thread! haha, I looooooove fruit so very much...
let's see..these are what I eat often:

bananas
mangos
blackberries and raspberries
grapes
oranges
watermelon
avocados, bell peppers, cucumbers

these are my treats:
dried fruits, especially dates, figs, and pineapple...(dried cantaloupe is my all-time favorite food..Mmmmmm)
Durian...sooo heavenly

Hooray for fruit!!!!

Rawpriestess, I'm so glad you like mangos now! the key to getting a really good one is to make sure it's not hard or too squooshy and has just the right amount of little brown spots, like a ripe banana...I hate it when my mangos are too stringy or mushy..yuck!

I just went to the most beautiful farmer's market and I'll be going back each week, anyway I got the most wonderful home grown fruits and veggies there. I'm in fruit heaven right now. I tried a new fruit I've never had before called a loquat. It's pretty tasty and it reminds me of a persimmon but better. I have great luck with regular mangos altough I have tried the costco ones that you were talking about, RP and they were pretty good too. I find that with mangos there is like a 2 day window in which to eat them after they are no longer hard and before they are mushy. I watch mine closely each day in the fridge and get them right at the perfect time. My favorite fruits that we don't get too often are blueberries and blackberries just because I usually only like organic ones and they are hard to find here. I just got a bunch yesterday though. What a blessing.

I've never heard of those last three!

As for me I never knew there were so many different types of berries RP! The fruits I always have are:
apples
pears
oranges
grapes

and more recently:
honeydew
cantaloupe
watermelon
peach
nectarine

I've never had any weird fruit yet. I think I've tried some but never liked them. I want to be adventurous, but I'm reluctanat lol. I need someoneto be adventurous with me :) I don't like mangos. They have a tinny taste to me and the ones that don't have a weird texture and after taste. Not my favorite fruit to say the least.

Oh you lucky thing, moonstone, I've been dying to try a whole mangosteen. I had some bottled juice from it a long time ago which gave me an idea of its wonderful taste but it was pasteurized which always ruins the taste. Yuck. It must be wonderful to live in a tropical paradise with all those exotic fruits. Here's my list of exotic dream fruits that I wish to someday try if I ever find them:

Mangosteen
Dragon fruit
Young green coconut
Lychee
Durian
Prickly pear
Passion fruit

I can't remember all of them, oh and I wish I could find raw figs more often. I had some once and they were so good.

Right now it is mangosteen, dragon fruit, lychee, and durian season. I just enjoyed a fresh salad and TONS of lychee. YUMMY. I just can't stop with them. Durian reminds me too much of a vegetable and just can't do it. Passion Fruit, actually on my street people have tons of them in their yard. One of these days I will ask them if I can pick some.

Yummy FRUIT!

rawpriestess,

Your thread is inspirational! I cannot find some of the exotic fruits listed thus far, but some I have tried with varying levels of acceptance. In an ongoing effort to keep open to the new and untried, I make it a practice to not say, "I don't like....." I will say, "It's not my favorite." I do this because the first time I tasted blue cheese--YUCK! Second time, like it. Don't eat it anymore, but good example of keeping open.

Rambutin sounds intriguing, but do not know when the season is and if I could get them local. Tried frozen durian--smelly for sure, but also good. Don't know what to do with the rest that I re-froze, though.

I finished a several month adoration for white grapefruit and moved to grapes, solid standby for green smoothies bananas, and now berries of all types. Loving it, but the best is yet to come in early July--WATERMELON season! Can hardly wait!

Will be shopping this week at the Asian market and will look for new fruits to try.

Thanks for the great thread.

Just wanted to say that tastes change as health returns. Salt and other harmful food flavorants cause the taste buds to become numb and insensitive. This is why a common complaint of the elderly is that they can't taste anything. When we stop eating those things and our taste buds heal, we are able to taste the full range of subtle flavors in foods. Some of the things I disliked early in my transition are now my favorite foods. I think it's a good idea to keep going back and trying new things even if you don't like them the first time.

Warm wishes,
Nora

We are blessed, we live in Blackberry heaven, we have an entire hillside of blackberries, more than all the families in the area can pick and eat, and still plenty for all the wild life, blackberries grow wild here, and people are always cutting them down as a nusance. LOL

anyway, blueberries are the same, lots of wild ones, so totally organic and tasty and yum, they won't be in season till late August, but then we pick barrels full and dehydrate, eat fresh and freeze for later. yummyy!!!

Yep, we are blessed, all of those berries grow wild here, and we do cultivate and plant strawberries, but even they grow wild in our parks and on the side of the road, like all the other berries listed. I love the Pacific Northwest!!!

Oh yummmmmy, Starfruit is my favorite fruit in the whole world. I wish I could find them more. Where I used to live as a little girl, my neighbor had a starfruit tree and they didn't like them, so he gave them all to me. I loved them so much. Now because of this thread I am craving them. I guess I will need to take a trip south and see if I can't find some.

Nora, you are so right about taste buds healing. I used to not be able to eat alot of the raw ripe fresh fruits and veggies that I love now, and when I fell off the raw wagon so many times, and went back to cooked, it always tasted funny to me, very salty, too hot. LOL and just was weird to me. LOL

haven't go tthe courage to try persimmon yet, they look gross to me, and I've heard they are only good if you eat them all black spotted and squishy, I don't think I'd like that, so I haven't tried them yet. LOL

Lately we've been eating...

mangoes
avocados (all of the time!)
grapes
watermelon
cantaloupe
strawberries
apples
apricots
bananas
tomatoes

I want some papaya but can rarely find any that looks good.. usually it is rotten. :(

There is an organic berry/vegetable farm (you pick) that is opening for the berries later this week. They are going to have Strawberries and Cherries so far. I hope they have Blackberries too because those are my fav.

If you ever had butterscotch pudding (yeah that's kinda squishy) persimmons are the best comparison. Chop and smoosh a couple of fresh ripe ones (hafta wait till fall) in a cold bowl with a touch cinnamon and your squish phobia will either be heightened or decrease considerably :D

RP, you have to try persimmons! They are like custard! When I first bought them I didn't let them get ripe enough and they are horrendous! It sucks the moisture out of your mouth--BUT when they are ripe custard heaven!

I just discovered champagne mangoes. They are smaller, yellow and oblong. The fruit is more delicate and sweeter than regular mangoes!

Some suggestions:
gooseberry (http://www.crfg.org/pubs/ff/gooseberry.html)
black currant (http://dnr.wi.gov/org/caer/ce/eek/veg/plants/currant.htm)
red currant (http://www.hellohello.com.au/instruction/redcurrant.html)
wild strawberries (http://www.wildmanstevebrill.com/Plants.Folder/Strawberry.html)

Recently, I've been eating mandarines, coconuts and persimmons. Aww, and apples.

I went on a mango kick for a long time! They were on sale at the grocery store and I would buy so many at a time and eat and eat and eat! Mmmm
But then, I bought them somewhere else, they were huge and organic and they tasted like the dried and sugared mango pieces. It was really weird and turned me off mangoes. :/ I haven't had one in months.

I'd really love to try durian!

Wow, RP that's a pretty comprehensive list already!

Mulberries!! I don't understand why they aren't as prevalent and why no one seems to sell them much, they were used a lot more in the old homesteading settler type days. They're fab, and they grow on bushes that can turn into huge trees. Maybe you'd like to plant some. They taste amazing and they're loaded with good antioxidants similar to the ones in blueberries, etc.

Once a tree/bush is established the yield is amazing too.

I'd really love to try durian!

We tried a durian and it was absolutely and everlastingly disgusting. The only thing that I can think of is maybe it was bad.... we could only find a source that sells frozen durians. Maybe it wasn't good because it was frozen before it was ripe or perhaps frozen after it was over ripe.. I don't know. But I do know it was nasty. I'm not sure if I would want to try one again unfortunately :(

It didn't smell that bad actually, but the taste...........
