I see people talking about having HUGE salads and I'm just wondering what your salad sizes are?

A small "side" salad
A dinner plate
Large bowl
Serving bowl
ect.??

Just curious :D

I just measured. The bowls that I usually use are 6 cups when filled flush to the top. However, I've been known to make salads that overflow the bowl. It's also rare that I can actually finish the salad. It looks good to start with, but I'm usually full before I reach the bottom. It also depends on what type of salad I have. I would use these bowls for a salad that is mostly greens, topped with other things. If I have other things that are more substantial than mainly greens, then I'll usually use a dinner

I can't remember the last time I had a salad, but my smoothies are pretty big.

We use a large serving bowl to make salads, and then we both eat it.

Its' usually an entire head of lettuce, or mixed greens,
one or two hole carrots, two large tomatoes, 1/2 large white onion, 1 large cucumber, 10 radishes,1 ear of corn, maybe 1 cup of flowers, 1 cup of herbs, 4 or 5 large mushrooms, 1 cup black olives (kalamata) 4 or 5 hot peppers, 1 red pepper, maybe 1 cup nuts and then we add the juice of one or two lemons or limes, and some olive oil or some nut cheese, and some spices.

probably about 2 to 4 quarts of salad at one sitting each, it can take us over an hour to eat this.

we make the same size salad whether it is just the two of us or a whole bunch of friends, with friends we add an entre' and dessert, if it is just us, we can't seem to make a salad any smaller than bohemoth size.

sometimes I eat large salads, probably a family size bowl about 3/4 way filled.. about 1 head of lettuce. I consume far more juices and smoothies though.. digest better.

I haven't had a salad for a while, but when I do, I usually share a large bowl of salad with my husband.

I have one salad bowl for my salads and it is between the size of a large bowl and a serving bowl that I fill so heaping full that I can't move my fork around much at first or my precious greens will fall on the floor! I love my greens.

mine are incredibly huge, too

I would guess about 6 cups? or something like that - a lot. Sometimes I am wondering whether I eat too much in volume?

Glad to know I'm not alone in my huge salads :) Greens get compacted in our stomachs so that's our excuse right? haha. Whenever my dad or brother-in-law see they say "That's a HUGE salad, how can you eat all that!?" and my mom or sister respond iwth "that's all she eats. It has less calories then you're eating and it's mostly fluffy greens."

Mine are HUGE. I'm sure it's 6-8 cups at least. It's one of those stainless steel serving bowls. I use at least one avocado for the dressing. I eat it all...probably why I never lose any weigh.

Wow you all eat big salads! I can never finish even a dinner plate sized one. Maybe that's why I'm hungry 2 hours after I eat mine! I love the veggies I mix with my greens more than the lettuce itself. That is usually what is left on my plate. I should just make veggie salads and put the greens in my smoothies. I do drink one of those everyday.

ok, i think i win. I had 2 large heads of romaine with some red leaf leaves (about 2 lbs) in my large salad bowl last night for dinner. This does NOT include the head of kale and the head of spinach I ate in my green smoothies earlier in the day. I ate about 3.5 to 4 lbs of leafy greens yesterday. Not to mention with all my fruit!

Yep, mine are large too... a heaping dinner plate. It IS amazing how compacted things get once we chew them. I realized this when I first stuffed my food processor to the top with greens, fruit and veg and blended down to like 10 oz.

About 2 cups of greens...and I top it with about a cup of veggies. They vary. I love this! It's been my new craving for about 2 days now. Just delicious. :D I have one for lunch and one for dinner. Yummmmmm.

my salads are huge! usually I fill up a serving bowl with lots and lots of greens and veges and I will take a few hours to eat it all. Sometimes longer but I never have cravings when I have a nice wonderful raw salad to munch on!

I eat pretty big salads myself. I eat a big one for lunch that usually consists of the following:

2 cups baby spinach
1 shredded carrot
handful of sprouts
small amount of raw cashews and raw sesame seeds
1/4 cup raisins
handful shredded daikon
Dressing: juice of one small orange, ginger freshly grated (1 tsp.), and a drizzle of extra virgin cold pressed olive oil with Celtic Seasalt

Sometimes, I add dulse flakes or sunflower seeds.

I also eat a smaller more dinner sized salad at dinner. I can't eat a big quantity of food at a time, so I tend to eat smaller portions, but more frequently. Of course, my dinner salad goes with a raw entree at dinner...

I eat a ton, but I train on my bike and race (so 8-12 hours per week of exercise).

I just checked the bowl I usually put my salad in. It's a 3 quart. My salads are usually 2 quart - 3 quarts. So, anywhere between 8-12 cups.

Mine are small, about 3 cups. Overeating, even good foods, is very stressful for your digestion. I prefer to get my greens primarily by juicing.

I use a HUGE serving bowl for my salads. I got tired of using a large dinner plate and having it fall all over the place because it was so big.

My bowl is about 8 cups and it is usually heaping so I would say between 9-10 cups for my salads. I usually have two of these each day plus green smoothies. I love greens and I love fruit. :D

I use a pasta bowl for my personal salads. It is pretty big, and holds about 5-6 cups of liquid.

I tend to eat very large salads. Usually anywhere from 4-8 cups, though I have eaten larger salads, like 10-12 cups before. I guess it depends how hungry I am and what all I have on my salad. I am one of those people where everyone who sees me says, "How can you eat all that?" and "You're not eating all of that, are you?" or "Where do you put all that?" It's funny to hear people say, "How can you eat that much" when you're sitting there with fruits or veggies that probably contain 300 calories and they sit there with a steak and mashed potatoes that have 1000 calories, and they think they're eating less than you because their food takes up less volume. I never will understand some people.

I guess I'll write down mine:

6-8 cups of greens (hey, they're fluffy lol)
.5-.75 bell pepper
1-2 stalks of celery
couple slices of onion
28 grape tomatoes
sometimes shredded carrots and caggabe
.5 lemon juiced

well, i got so tired of chopping or ripping the lettuce to look like a salad that I just started rinsing and washing the leaves and placing them in my absolutely enormous bowl. Ya..... I just rip with my hands and eat the leaves...is that weird or what?? But honestly, I prefer eating this way. It takes a little bit less time and when I get to sit outside and eat, it feels so much more natural than eating with a fork. I have never liked forks...my hands do just fine.

I do that occassionally. Sometimes the fork just gets in the way ;)

As long as you don't have oil on it or your hands will get icky, but very soft haha.

I think people are worrying too much if they think 6 - 8 cups of raw salad is overeating!!

Overeating is stuffing your face with, for example, a plate of cooked fries, a 12 oz steak, deep fried onion rings and a mass of ranch dressing. Closely followed by a huge portion of SAD ice cream and cookies. This food is the bad, addictive stuff that causes obesity and other health problems.

In my view, you cannot compare volumes of salad to the SAD stuff that you perhaps ate previously.

I love seeing a huge plate/bowl of fresh salad with a natural, healthy dressing on it - JUST GO FOR IT!!

Tracy

PS I speak as a previously very fat person who ate the standard UK diet and was addicted to all the bad things and ate them continuously. With raw, I can eat what I need, when I need it. I recently bought Victoria Boutenko's book '12 steps to raw' and that just confirmed it for me.

I'm still overweight (but was 60lbs heavier than I am now) but it is coming off with raw food and I feel so much better for it!!

Thanks for pointing that out English Tracy. You're right. It's just for me that when my parents or friends see what I eat when I get large salads and then they make comments and stare...it's extremely uncomfortable for me. I think it stems from the ED I'm recovering from. I could not eat in front of anyone, no matter how small or whtat the item was. So eating a salad that is 6-8 cups and getting the stares and comments is completely opposite and can get me anxious and embarassed, makes me think I'm a "pig" or something!!

English Tracy you are right and I will take it a step further.

Greens are so fluffy that it seems like you are eating a lot more than you are. If you tried to pack it into a measuring cup, without all the air you'd be surprised how little greens you may be getting.

IMO a dinner plate sized salad is not nearly enough for a raw foodist.

We need those essential nutrients that only greens provide, and if one can't eat it in a salad without dousing it with a huge amount of fat, then a green smoothie is your next best bet.

Another idea is to cut the leaves smaller, like a chopped salad, so you are able to pack more into your bowl.

I had to use a meat platter for my salad today because it wouldn't fit on a regular plate. But then I wasn't able to eat all of it. I ate about 2/3 for lunch and 1/3 for dinner.

'Overeating' is really a subjective term--at least for me :) LOL For me, I HAVE to eat the way I do--I'm a competitive athlete...know what I am saying here? Eating large amounts of salad can't really be considered 'overeating' in my book LOL.

Others, too, may have active lives on their jobs, at home, or chasing small children or animals around...

Just food for thought :)

My grandfather makes comments about my big salads. He ask in disquest: "Your going to eat all of that?" I say: "Oh, yeah, every last bite, hmmm!" Then later he will go get a nutty butty and I ask him: "Are you going to eat all of that?" LOL

Hello, I don't really enjoy eating any salad with tons of greens so this is what I do and it works so perfect and goes down quick. I put one bunch of spinach or kale in the blender with 1/2 of an avocado and 1 1/2 c water or fresh squeezed oj and blend and drink it down and I'm done for the day. :o)

The one I had yesterday was 20 cups! I haven't seen THAT number yet. It worked for me though. I ate all but two cups within an hour and a half, waited a half an hour and ate the rest. Mmmm.

It had:

1 head romaine
1 head red leaf lettuce
1 head of celery
20 tiny plum tomatoes (they were actually sweet!)
3 small carrots
1 cup alfalfa sprouts
1/2 cucumber
5 small radishes
1 avocado
Juice of 1/2 lemon
2 small cloves garlic
2 more ribs of celery

SNMB - wow, now THAT's a salad!!! How do you have a bowl that's big enough lol? How full does that make you feel? I should try that one day...I need more greens! Do you have one that big daily? If you do I would think that that's A LOT of produce when you shop (unless you go every day or something!).

I've actually got two bowls that are big enough for that. One is a five quart Waechtersbach serving bowl that looks like this:

http://waechtersbachusa.com/images/product/222523Cherry%20Red-6757.jpg

And the other is a similarly sized clear glass bowl from IKEA.

I do feel full when I eat salads this big but it also takes me a long time to eat them. Two hours at least. I'm never full to the point of being uncomfortable and you couldn't tell that I'd just eaten so much to look at me.

I do often shop every day - I've got a store that sells organic produce about six blocks away from my house and just one block from my work. And about a mile away is the food co-op where I can buy anything I need. Yesterday, I bought a head of lettuce (picked another one out of the garden), a bunch of carrots, bunch of radishes, pint of plum tomatoes, avocado, lemon, celery, etc at the food co-op and today I filled in what I needed more of, which was lettuce and an avocado.
