Hi all, I'm sorry if you've already discussed this...but is corn on the cob raw? This city girl is kinda stumped on this one! When the cob comes off the stalk, are the kernels soft or are they heated in some way to make them so?

Thanks!!

The fresh corn on the cob that you buy at a grocery store should be raw. The fresher it is, the softer the kernels will be.

Thanks to you and Spectatrix. I was a little embarrassed to ask

I remember the first time I saw broccoli growing out of the ground. I was totally amazed!!....Yeah, I am somewhat removed from my food source, but I am learning!!

just give it a good rinse and chomp away. it's one of my favorite, cheap vegetables. one ear really helps me fill up before a long shift or bike ride.

I love corn on the cob raw... even before starting raw I would eat it without cooking..

My fridge froze a couple of weeks ago and I discovered a new recipe. Frozen corn, put in the dehydrator to warm, with a drizzle of coconut oil and sea salt... it JUST LIKE BBQ's in husk/boiled corn with butter! I'm serious!!!

I do love it fresh too... and it's gorgeous sliced off the cob in salads too.

Cheers,
Sheryl

I can't stand to eat it off the cob. Little pieces of it stick in my teeth. I just take a knife and cut it from the cob. It's delcious to eat just like that, or mixed with some lentil sprouts, tomatoes and hot peppers.

I had a question, so I'll ask it here. Is corn on the cob raw dangerous to eat? My mom said it caused parasites/worms. I kind of gave her a look not believing her. I took parasitology (the study of parasites) my freshman year in college and never heard anything about that...so is it true?

Has anyone else gotten sick on eating corn on the cob raw?

Worms are common in corn, but they're big enough so you can see them easily when you peel off the husk. They're a light green color. For a long time I wouldn't buy corn with the husk still on because I didn't like finding the little fellows in my kitchen. This was especially a problem when I lived in a city apartment and the kitchen was way up high. No way to take them outside without going down stairs.

Now I've noticed, many stores offer a big garbage can near the corn so you can peel off the husk and throw it and any worms right away. The worms are no harm to you. Just wash the corn and eat it. Or if you're really skeeved out by them, buy corn that is already husked and trimmed and wrapped in plastic. It won't taste quite as fresh, but you won't have to worry about the worms.

Technially worms and bugs could be in any kind of fruit or vegetable you eat. Some things like apples, will usually have a visible hole where the worm got in, giving you a clue not to eat it. But with things like cabbage where there are many layers of leaves, a worm or bug could lurk inside. I've found worms and slugs inside cabbage before. No big deal really. I just take the leaf they're on and throw it outside.

I slice off the cob and eat it by the handfuls, like candy corn. it is so swet especially whe you've been without refined sugars for a while.
