Yes it is raw
An excerpt from their web site:
We began making almond butter over 25 years ago. At first our almond butter was roasted, but that has become a very small part of what we do. Most of our time and energy nowadays goes into making alive almond butter. We have developed, over the years, a proprietary process. We make it slowly. We slice and let it rest in a refrigerator .We slice again the next day. Most others grind rather than slice and do it all at once, under conditions of considerable heat and pressure. Furthermore, we make it in small batches so itÂ’s fresh and alive.

Is the brand Maranatha raw? It says organic and raw and the ingredients list organic raw almonds, but not sure if it is really raw (I eat it constantly). It was like $14.99, but this other almond butter at Vitamin Cottage was in the refrig. section and specifically stated it was not heated. It was $33.99. If truly raw almond butter is that expensive I'll just keep eating the other one which to me is still crazy expensive, but $33.99??????????? Jeepers!

No... Maranatha "raw" almond butter is not truly raw. It is heated in the process :(
fruit --- Thanks. That is not a bad price considering. I hope our Whole Foods has it too.

Publix is a grocery store.
I live in Colorado but I remember Publix from when I lived in Florida and South Carolina.

Rejuvenative Foods is a reliable source for raw nut butters of all kinds, including almond, Brazil nut, pumpkin seed, tahini, sunflower-sesame-pumping, hemp seed, etc.

Only $2.99 at Publix? That's surprising since their organic produce (and Wal Mart's) is a lot more expensive than SweetBay. I'll have to try it. If it is indeed raw, that's the best price I've ever seen for it... even the non-raw stuff.

I just tried the living tree almond butter last week. It really is the best stuff I've tasted. Guess I'll be using that one instead of the maranatha since it's not really raw. Thanks for the info.

I have a Green Life and I know there is a way to make Almond Butter but I haven't done it yet... I have been thinking about it though, because it would end up being less expensive.
Can you make nut butters with a Vitamix?

I was wondering about Trader Joe's almond butter. It says raw, but is it really? It's only $5.99 for a 16 oz jar. I previously bought almond butter from rawfood.com (can't remember the exact name) and that was a little over $20. That's sooo expensive!

I also want to know about making nut butter in the vitamix because I just bought one. I have a Champion juicer, but it doesn't really work for nut butter. It overheats.
i have read on the boards that we can make nut butters in the vitamix.. but i don't know how to go about it.. to me it seems like it would overheat like crazy..
i dont know why i didnt think about checking Trader Joes. My bet is that they use raw almonds to make the butter but that they heat it up real good in the process...

I was interested in the Maranatha raw almond butter question because I buy it. So I went to their website and found this, which could be true of any brand of raw nut butters I suppose:

~What is the difference between your "raw" and "roasted" products?
The terms "raw" and "roasted" do not have a regulated definition of meaning. At Maranatha, and in the nut products industry, these terms are generally used in the following way:
"Raw" nut butter products are not subjected to any treatment or heat prior to the grinding process. These items are often preferred by people who are looking for minimally processed food that is "as close to Nature" as possible.
"Roasted" nut butters are baked or heated in some way to produce a desired flavor and/or color prior to grinding. Some manufacturers use oil in the roasting process. At Maranatha, we do not use oil. Instead, we carefully dry roast the nuts at low temperatures to produce a delicious, toasty flavor.

~What temperature are your raw nut butters produced at?
During the grinding process for all of our products (and for most any commercially made nut butter), there is considerable heat generated by the friction of the ingredients inside the grinder. We do not specifically monitor this temperature, but we know by our Quality Assurance tests and product safety standards that it is sufficient to eliminate any harmful or opportunistic bacteria.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
~Can I eat your raw products as part of a raw foods diet?
Different raw food diets use different temperature thresholds to define what is "raw" by that diet's standards. The term "raw" is not regulated and we do not wish to mislead any consumer who is following a strict raw eating plan.
With over 20 years of producing nut butters, our professional suggestion for any strict raw food eater is this: Purchase a high quality food mill or food processor and conduct your own grinding trials to monitor the temperature of the finished product. With a smaller batch you may be able to better control the friction and heat produced during the grinding. We wish you every success in this process as this was how our business began over 20 years ago.
