I went through the samething. I was eating raw for months and no results. well I got fed up and I said you know what I am not going to stop living my life because I am fat. so although I had no results from following raw I starting to do all the things I said I wanted to do when I became skinny and guess what I am slimming down. I would tell you to just forget about the weight and enjoy the lifestyle more. Like get out there and go to potlucs, raw resturants and farmers markets. You will loose weight on your bodies time.
Sincerely Shernell

When I first went raw, I felt bloated, tired with little energy, and my fingernails began to chip off and I started getting hangnails like crazy.
Those things have since changed. You said that your face is breaking out, but not a "cleansing-type"...why do you say that? You have to understand that ANY breaking out of the skin is the body's attempt to cleanse and bodily cleansing can happen for one of two reasons: 1.) because we're eating crappy and all other channels of elimination are so bogged down that the body begins to express the need to release toxins in extreme ways or 2.) because we have changed something in our way of eating/living for the better and the body is reacting by taking the opportunity to cleanse itself.
So, you are seeing external results with the facial break-outs...but you really don't know the internal reason your body is doing it. But either way, it IS cleansing.
As for your waist...many have mentioned bloating when first going raw, it's not uncommon.
I think that what you are experiencing IS a form of detox or cleansing if you will hence your cravings for the soy-based veggie dogs with chili and anything else you're craving. Detoxing and cleansing causes old cravings to get stirred up. If you give in to it now, you'll only end up dealing with it again later.
Sure, you could go ahead and have those things YET, still stick with raw and not give up because it sounds like you're ready to give up. Sometimes it takes those incidents of going back to the old way in order to fully appreciate and realize that we really DO feel better eating raw...don't view that as a cop-out because it happens to the best of us.
Also, please don't give up because sometimes things happen when you least expected it. You have been raw for a month and you expected that by now, you should be having SOME kind of changes taking place and I realize it's disappointing and frustrating not to...but I promise if you keep going you will begin to reap the benefits you've heard so much about. Everyone is different and what one person experiences in a week or a month, someone else may not experience for a longer period.
But it's your decision. Reflect back to why you decided to try raw in the first place and keep that before you as a goal.
What are you eating, by the way...what's your current raw diet looking like?

My advice would be
Ditch salt completely
Ditch any oils completely
Use no more than small handful of nuts or seeds or one small avocado a day for fat
Drink at least one green smoothie a day(with kale, collards, etc.)
Use as little as you can of spices and dehydrated stuff
This helped me a lot to get my energy and loose weight. Be prepared for peeing a lot first 24 hours and possibly more intense short detox. For me it was quick relief. I am not pushing it on you, but if you want you can try and see, if that would be your solution too.

Eating spices, onion, garlic and especially eating salt causes you to crave things. Check out what Dr Graham has to say about eating excitotoxins like spices on his FAQ at www.doctorgraham.cc

I've always been a craver. I've always craved stuff, even on a cooked diet (I don't want to say SAD, because vegetarian isn't really SAD.)
I keep telling myself that I just need to give it time. I haven't cared before because it was easy, so it was just like "whatever."
But now since I AM wanting something in particular, it's hard to resist when I haven't seen the benefits of sticking this way, you know?
When I mentioned the breakouts, I mean It's not like i'm suddenly breaking out like a cleansing break out..I mean i'm not broken out any more or less than usual.
Because I read some people on here had great results with better skin and even weight loss by upping avocados and coconut oil, so I've done both of those within the past couple weeks.
I usually drink 1-2 green smoothies every day with spinach, baby greens, kale, whatever. I usually force myself to add other sprouts to my smoothie or to my other salads, even though I only like bean sprouts. I graze a lot on cucumbers, pineapple, mangos. Lately it's been vidalia onions, bean sprouts, and cucumbers with a little ACV, agave, a lot of dill, and a little olive oil. Some days I have a cup of nuts, some days I don't have any. I didn't like avocado before I went raw. I love them now. Ever since I tried the spicy taco recipe a couple weeks ago, I've been eating avos almost daily.
I read all the conflicting advice, don't worry about what you eat as long as it's raw, food combine, don't eat sweet/dried/whatever fruit, follow 8/1/1. Which is not only confusing, but kind of extra frustrating. It'd be nice to find an eating plan where you just EAT when you're hungry. Needless to say I've been following the "don't worry about what you eat as long as it's raw."

Well, try low fat and no salt for 2 weeks and see. I know how much different advice we are getting, but don't forget, we also getting very different results.Try for at least two eeks and see how it would work for you. Since you tried upping avocados and coconut oild and still feel bad, try lowering fat and see.
Salt important to drop too, because it is poison and stimulant and keeps cravings up.

Everyone's detox is different. It's not really fair to compare yourself to others. Some people detox right away and others takes awhile for things to start to loosen up. I encourage you to continue to do raw. You will start to see changes sooner or later believe me. Although some people may disagree I used to give colonics and I strongly agree that its a great way to jump start your cleanse. It may just take one or it may take several. After you have been raw awhile you most likely will not fill the need for them. I did them in the beginning of my raw transition and I feel it helped to speed things along for me. After awhile I didn't feel I need it. Now at the occasional "wagon fall" colonics/enemas have helped me to get the poisons cleaned out faster. The choose is up to you and how you feel about them though. I no longer have to do them in my stage of this lifestyle.
Changes will come, 1 month is a great accomplishment, but this is not some crash diet. Slower the results the better you will be. (We all know how SAD and other diets work, lose it fast, gain it fast, plus 15 pounds plus). Treat this new found lifestyle as such. Make your mind over that this is not a diet, this is the way I live.
Also try to find some time to check out your mental and emotional needs. I know when I first joined the lifestyle I thought I was only in need of physical healing. Wow, was I wrong. If I may suggest the book "healing my life" ??? I can check the title and author for you if your interested. But the exercises are wonderful and they allowed me to make breakthrough that I wasn't able to do without it and it really increased my physical health in a positive way. I never knew that I really didn't love myself. I was able to turn that around. I now love myself. I LOVE MYSELF!!! I LOVE MYSELF!!! and I'm not afraid to say it.
I think my health problems and weight issues all had to do with the fact that I didn't love myself enough to be healthy. I was always doing something to harm myself, most of the time I didn't even think about it even though I had done these things to myself over and over my entire life.
Love yourself enough to take care of you and commit to yourself.
For me raw works, but everyone has to find their own way, although I don't think your doing raw and are here on this forum for no reason. If your here there's more to this lifestyle then just weight and clear skin, your here to grow in one way or another.
I hope you continue your journey on raw and if you need any help feel free to email me.

P.S. about the feeling bigger. I experienced the same exact thing. Then my belly started getting flatter a few weeks later and hardening. Something to think about. This is actually a symptom for some of detox.

When I first went raw I experienced some of the same frustrations. I have been a vegetarian for about 8 years but I started craving red meat like crazy. I even felt like I could smell it. But there were things that I started to really enjoy that I never liked before. For instance, I hated olives but once going raw I have started to really enjoy them. Also, in the past when I ate onions I would always add extra onions for the flavor. Since going raw I can no longer tolerate a lot of onions on/in my food. I no longer have the need to put salt on my food where in the past I would over salt my food because it just did not taste salty enough. I also thought that I should see drastic changes very quickly - but every body is different. Some things changed quickly but mostly it has been a slow process. I have a friend who took 7 months to start to see real changes. She just hung in there. I am not that far along yet but when I see the changes that have happened for her - I know that it will be worth the wait for me to continue on this journey.
Things have not been perfect. In the beginning I felt bloated and tired and I had the facial breakouts. I did a lot of reading and I have found that even the little changes are just signs of detoxifacation. I was happy that the detox syptoms were not drastic because I have a busy life and I appreciated that my body did not go crazy and I could still enjoy changing my eating for the better.
Since you are planning on having the colon therapy that may help. When you have an opportunity to see all of the "stuff" that is expelled during the therapy you may appreciate the good you are doing for your body by sticking with it.

Hi codajess,
Different types of advice can often be relevant to different type of people at different stages of their experience. When someone enters raw foods, the only advice they really need is "don't worry about what you eat as long as it's raw". Staying raw is a big achievemnt for someone who might have been a coooked foodist for decades. Food combining is another level, which many enter instinctively or by learning from others. Yes, we quickly notice that poor food combining leads to bloating and other problems. After some time of being raw, many discover that they love fruit and move spontaneously to a fruit-based diet. Then, they might discover that they feel best when they eat less fat. And so, we progress in our raw food transition. Ultimately, we learn that we can follow our natural instincts, and simply eat when hungry, and choose foods that are appropriate for us by simply using our senses (taste etc.)
My suggestion is that you eat foods that you love, rather than force yourself to eat foods that you hate but think that you should be eating. No need to suffer like that. Let your body guide you. It will! Try various types of foods, observe how they make you feel, and choose those that make you feel best. Remember that our taste can be seasonal and our body may need different types of foods at different times! Gradual improvements to your diet by observing your body is far better than forced food choices based on other people's advice. Also, when you relax and actually have fun, life will be so much easier!
All the best,
Gosia.

I'm HOPING that if I give myself what I crave right now (lots of avocado right now) eventually my body will balance itself out and what I need will be what i crave and what I don't, I won't. It may be wishful thinking or it might really happen. I just don't know if I should deny the cravings for avos or whatever, or just give in. I can go without the chips/veggie dog. I was just having a whiny PMS moment (Thanks for dealin with it! :D) But the avocados..I'm debating on if I should buckle down and follow some of the advice i've gotten on this thread, or if I should just eat what i'm craving (raw) and wait for it to all balance out.

I eat avocados whenever I want. When I first went raw I had them without restrictions, whenver I wanted them I ate them......and guess what.......I lost weight....slow....but I did....and I enjoyed life.....and guess what else.....I still eat avocados whenever I want......sometimes my body won't crave any and I will go days or weeks without any and then I will crave them like crazy like this week. I had 2 today....when I want it I eat it with no guilt and I enjoy every moment of it and it has not effected me in anyway but positive at the scales. Enjoy your avocados whether you want 1 a day on 9 a day, enjoy!

:D I've been on a dating hiatus until I get my own stuff together. I figure no matter who I date right now it's not going to work out until I'm secure with myself. I always try to find reasons to dump them. So! I'm on strike. :p
I'm hoping the colonic will help with the bloating because my waist isn't just regular fat, it's almost kind of hard (along with my normal fat.) so I'm hoping I'm just blocked up. We'll see!

Eat what you are craving (raw that is). When I went raw, I didn't know about this Board .. in fact, I didn't know Anyone that was raw. I simply did it and ate raw food. I didn't know a thing about food combining rules, soaking rules, etc etc etc. If I ate something that didn't agree with me, it was pretty easy to figure it out.
I'd go to the grocery store and buy what "made my mouth water".
So, eat those avos! Like you, I didn't much care of avocados before, but on raw I suddenly loved them and for a while at the beginning I would eat several of them a day. Just had to have 'em. Now, two years later, I still like avos and still eat one a day usually, but it is no longer a craving.
Sounds like you are already tuning into your body - and that is a HUGE accomplishment so early on in raw. Pat yourself on the back for that. Continue to tune in, and when you crave something else, go for it. I call it food binging, and I still do that at times. Simply have to have something -- no logical reason for it, but I still have to have it, so I make sure I eat it. These binges last sometimes for a few days ... sometimes for a few weeks.
When whatever it is my body needs is satisfied, then the craving goes away.
I do pay attention to what I'm eating, and do try to have some sort of balance between fruit, veges, greens and nuts ... but I always let my cravings dominate.
If you start feeling bored -- seek out new recipes that sound good to you -- have ingredients that you like. Attend potlucks to sample other folks' creations. Make it FUN.
As to why bother? Because you KNOW raw is better for you. You deserve to feel good - you body deserves to feel good.
Good luck!

I was just having a whiny PMS moment (Thanks for dealin with it! :D)
I had one of those whiny "it's not working!" moments a couple of weeks ago - as it turns out, I think it was a kind of detox! It passed.
I think you should enjoy avocados (in moderation) if that's what you're craving. For me, I think a month is when my body is just starting to adjust to this and starting to realize that it needs to clean itself out. I don't know if that's because I'm in such great health that there's not much cleansing and healing to do, or if I'm in such bad shape that the deep cleansing is still under the surface. Maybe you'll be the same way? I'm almost 30 days without cheating even once, and I feel like I'm just starting to feel more energetic. I'm relieved to hear that bloating is normal, because I've been wondering if this is going to be a permanent thing - I look 5 months pregnant. Funnily, when I started cheating a few months ago, the bloating went away. So I'm really glad you asked about that. It sounds like that will go away after awhile (I wonder how long - weeks? months? a year??)
if I should just eat what i'm craving (raw) and wait for it to all balance out.
Yes, that's what I think you should do. It may just be taking longer than 30 days to balance out.

Yes my momma always told me: "If your not happy single you will never be happy with anyone else". Other people can't make you happy and love yourself. You have to do it for yourself. When you do love of a good man will come if thats what you want or you may find your content with yourself. I hope your colonics help too. Make sure you get some electrolytes (cocunut water is great) right afterwards. Take some with you for after your session.

Hey Codajess,
I can relate to a lot of the stuff you are going through. Currently I feel the same way you do. I'm bloated, tired, my skin looks bad & haven't lost any weight. I've been raw before and have felt and seen what eating 100% raw can do so that motivates me to keep going even though i'm not seeing any results now. Last year it took me a couple of months of eating raw & exercising to finally start losing some weight. Then all of a sudden, I got cravings for just pinapple, watermelon, and grapefruit and that is mostly all a ate for a month and the pounds just fell off me and i my skin looked good and i had awesome energy and felt that natural raw high. The crazy thing about that month was that i was unable to exercise because i had a really bad rollerblading accident but i still lost weight. The thing was my body was finally balancing out.
I still have a lot of emotional issues with food and it definitely has been hard trying to stay raw. The root of my problem is that i don't love myself and my way of getting back at myself is by acts of self-hatred (overeating on SAD food, not taking care of myself, staying up all night, etc...). I'm a perfectionist and when i wouldn't slip up and not eat 100% raw, i would hate myself even more. Finally I'm starting to give myself more grace when i screw up and lovingly pick myself up and start again. I've read a couple of raw books and I got caught up in all the "rules". Alissa book is definitely the best book i've read and she gives me hope.
I'm also single and i know that until i love all of me wholeheartly, I won't be able to love a boyfriend/spouse the way they deserve to be loved, or anyone else for that matter.
Oh and also, I'm craving avocados like crazy too! :D I continue to eat them and enjoy every bite. Before I would freak out about it because i was eating a lot of fat but know I just figure my body needs good fats right now so i'm going to feed it what i feel it needs.
I know that you are not feeling well but just think how you would feel if you ate SAD food.... Before my whole mentality was wrong and i was setting myself up to fail. I had the attitude that the raw food lifestyle was something i had to do. Now I believe that I'm so blessed to know about the raw food lifestyle and it's something I get to do. (I know RP feels the same b/c of her signature)
Stay strong...I know you can do it! I hope all the best for you in your journey and let me know if i can help you in any way.

I am going to second this post. This has been my experience. At 10 months Raw I can say the hardest part is over and I have moved to a more fruit based diet, including the cucumber, avo, tomato (aka veggies..). My cravings for cooked..gone !! I see so many benefits in the 10th mo Raw !

Hi CodaJess,
As some of the people above said, they went through the same thing. I thought I would share another testimony . . . Nora Lentz ate 5 months 100% raw before she lost her first pound, and then the weight started to melt off. Check out her story along with before and after photos:
http://www.rawschool.com/story.htm
Hang in there. You will eventually start to see and feel changes. Your body is probably busy cleaning up and repairing in places, internally, that you can't see or feel, but if you're eating raw, there are changes taking place.

Hang in there! You have gotten so much great advice that I am only going to add one thing:
Don't forget to exercise!
Whatever exercise you chose to do and to whatever ability you can. Just move your body, get some oxygen in those lungs, break a sweat and repeat everyday. I guarantee you will feel better after some exercise.
Btw, thanks for sharing this so honestly. You speak for many of us!

I really appreciate all your advice and help, everyone. I have my first colonic this wed. We'll see how that goes and if it improves anything. I haven't had much temptation since I started a month ago, but I'm going on vacation this Friday. I'll see how hard it is when I'm away from home and around a lot of tempting junk foods.
I'm sticking with it because I keep telling myself it can only get better, and it takes time. If not for that, then to just prove to myself that I can be hard headed, stubborn, and have at least a little willpower when it comes to myself, not just everyone else. :D Again, thanks all. I really, really appreciate it!
