The package says it is for sprouting-but I can't get it to grow. Any special things I need to do?

What color is it? The brown kind is harder and it doesn't seem to sprout as well for use as cereal or granola, etc. I think it's for sprouting in dirt. But for sprouting for use in recipes, the raw buckwheat groats that are tan work better.

Problems sprouting buckwheat are usually caused by the wrong soak time, or insufficient rinsing. Buckwheat needs frequent rinsing, especially the hulled kind.

Buckwheat in the hulls needs to be presoaked 8-12 hours before sprouting. These are typically then spread out on dirt or other growing medium (I use peat moss or old towels) and grown into microgreens (called buckwheat lettuce) total time 5 - 7 days.

Hulled buckwheat, or buckwheat graots, the tan kind, should only be soaked 20-60 minutes, then rinsed thoroughly. Total time to sprout 1-2 days.

The most complete, most detailed information on sprouting all kinds of things can be found on www.SproutPeople.com It's better than any book.

I soak mine overnight, then I turn then I drain the water off and place then in the dish ringer on their side in a jar. I rince twice a day and then after a day or two (once they have a good tail) I take a planting tray fill it with dirt and spread the sprouts over the dirt and place the tray in a dark plastic bag and leave it in indirect sunlight for 3 days (water then before putting in bag, do not soak). After the 3 days I remove from bad water and leave them out of the bag and in indirect sunlight and enjoy when desired.
