Just wanted to say hi to everyone. I'm in Lynn, MA, north of Boston - not far from Alissa's old backyard, right next to Swampscott and a block away from the beautiful Atlantic ocean.
(Pardon me for my long introduction...)
So I've been lurking here a bit for a few months. I bought Alissa's book and DVD after I went raw for about a month, last year. I never felt better in my life than when I was eating raw - then, I reentered college - and it was way too easy to lose the new LIVING food for the SAD.
Well, about three years ago, I had a bowel resection (from diverticulitis attacks). Came out of that fine (thank God), and swore I would never go through that again, if I can help it. Despite the scare, I eventually returned to my old eating habits, which, of course, resulted in another diverticulits attack a few months ago. Did the trip to the ER, and took the prescribed antibiotics, and I was fine...
Until this past Memorial Day weekend.
Had yet another attack, (mucho stress plus rotten eating habits equals disaster). Didn't feel like spending the whole day at the ER, since my guy just got out of the hospital. Instead, I fasted (with that pain, who can eat?!), took lots of Wobenzym to counteract the dangerous swelling and infection (it worked in the past for a chest infection, so I have a huge bottle in the house). Later added slippery elm and began juicing when I was finally well enough to stand up. It was touch and go for awhile, but I feel terrific now!
As for my guy, he's ended up with some pretty serious dx's - arterioscerosis, several aneurysms, slipped disc, degenerated spine, cartilage is almost gone fr. one hip (he had a huge abdominal aneurysm repaired last yr, something he almost didn't survive, and now he needs bypass surgery in one leg, just to start). They sent him home with the same horrible pain he had before, and can still hardly walk a few steps. (Of course we are going to try yet another doctor, but I won't get started on our medical system...)
Guess what this was my wake up call. I am now a raw foodie (well, not totally, but close). Read my guy the riot act - while I can't immediately rid him of his serious health problems, I can make sure he doesn't make things worse. If he wants a cigarette, he can walk down the street for it (of course he can't). Same for the red meat, butter, cream cheese, etc. He would never go raw (we are talking old-school Italian here) like me, but at least now, his diet will be improved so it won't add to his condition(s). How I wished I had done this YEARS ago He tried to talk circles around his old addictions, but it won't work with me... :D
I finally unpacked the Excalibur dehydrator I purchased months ago (don't ask longer story than this!), and used it for the first time last night. All I can say is wow banana fruit leather is unbelievable better than candy!
Now I'm actually thinking of taking the plunge and doing the certification with Alissa in Maine, although I'm not totally raw yet - it's that morning coffee that is my last addiction. (Going to start diluting it with decaf so I won't go through the headaches & all.)
So that's my long hello!! :p :p :p
