View Full Version : Factual evidence that you should "listen to your body"!

How often have you heard, or said this: "Listen to your body".

It almost sounds magical/mysterious for people new to alternative nutrition, such as the living/raw foods lifestyle. I used to think my yoga teacher was exaggerating when she said it until I one day KNEW what she was referring to, and it just made sense. Same with nutrition - people just sometimes fail to trust their instincts.

But check out this link to a study that shows animals - including humans - have some "sense" about missing essential amino acids in their diets, causing them to seek out the foods which will provide that particular nutrient.

Interesting reading!

(I had to put quotes around the entire link, otherwise it only posts the first part, not the rest of the link.)

Here's just the beginning of the summary:

03/17/05 -- The biochemical mechanism that enables animals -- likely including humans -- to recognize when their diet is deficient in an essential amino acid has been identified for the first time by researchers at the University of California, Davis.

The findings by neurophysiologist Dorothy Gietzen and colleagues at UC Davis' School of Veterinary Medicine have implications for human health, particularly epilepsy, since some forms of epilepsy are influenced by amino acid deficiencies. That is because amino acids are the chemical units that the body uses to construct proteins for growth and development.

The study will appear in the March 18 issue of the journal Science.

"This constitutes a basic, well conserved mechanism in the brain of mammals that allows them to respond to nutritional stress and seek out food that will improve their chances for survival," Gietzen said.

For more than five decades, scientists have known that animals have the ability to sense when their diet is not providing sufficient amino acids. Of the 20 amino acids found in animals, eight of them cannot be produced by or stored in the body and, therefore, must be obtained through the foods the animals eat. These eight are known as "indispensable amino acids."

Previous research has shown that animals can sense within a matter of minutes if their diet is deficient in an indispensable amino acid, making use of a subconscious sensing mechanism that does not depend on taste or smell. For example, if rats are offered more than one type of feed, and the first feed they try is deficient in an indispensable amino acid, they will soon switch to another feed that provides the necessary amino acids.

Gietzen noted that animals ranging from single-cell organisms such as yeast, to invertebrates to humans, appear to have conserved this mechanism through evolution. As a result, humans have developed cultural patterns that provide important dietary choices. For example, long before people even knew of amino acids, some cultures paired rice with beans or the soybean product tofu. These are protein-rich plant foods which, when eaten together, provide a full complement of all indispensable amino acids.

Have you read the Boutenko's book, where she tells about how her son was eating mangoes and blueberries all the time and her daughter was always eating olives and figs? Then she found out from Dr. Bernard Jensen, that her son should eat mangoes and blueberries for his juvenile diabetes and her daughter should eat figs and olives for her asthma. And Dr. Jensen didn't even know the kids were going crazy on these things already!

Hi Brianna,
No, I haven't read the Boutenko's book, although I am on their mailing list and have heard several pretty amazing stories about what they learned in their raw journey.

It's all remarkable, and so simple, I'm just fascinated when I find a "scientific" bit of information confirming what humans knew for thousands of years about our health.

BTW, noticed you are in West Palm Beach. I'm in Lake Worth! Small world!

Have a great afternoon,
Jackie

By the way, this research was published in:

Oooh, Gosia! How cool that you found the original source of the article! That just gives me a hint about how well-read you are! Excellent!!

Isn't this type of article just amazing?

I was speaking with my accupuncturist a few months ago, about some "new" research showing that there really is scientific proof that the theories behind accupuncture really exist. We both had a laugh over this! Accupuncture has been helping people for a very long time, and now Western scientists have "discovered" that it's not bogus.

This is such a fun topic for me!

I can't wait until they "prove" that junk food is bad for us to eat and by changing to a living foods lifestyle we'll be able to heal ourselves....

Jackie, thanks for sharing this info with us. I'm taking a biology course right now and am learning all about the wisdom of the body -- how the cells communicate with each other, how they regulate the amounts of nutrients etc., so this finding doesn't surprise me at all. The body really is a "miracle machine."

Could you provide a link or some info to the Boutenko's mailing list? I have several of their books and really love them.

Hi Swingbolder,

I went to the www.rawfamily.com website to sign up for the newsletter. Or, you can email Victoria at victoria@rawfamily.com

Also, here is what is on the bottom of the last email I received:

"Please note: Previous issues of the Raw Family Newsletter are now available

free of charge on our website: www.rawfamily.com

If you have signed up before but are not yet receiving the newsletter,

it may be because of your anti-spam program.

Every time we send the newsletter out, we receive over 1000 returns due to the

anti-spam programs. Make sure we are added to your address book! "

Hope this helps! BTW, biology class must be da bomb! Especially if you're into a living foods lifestyle - learning all about what's going on and how our bodies work...keep up the good work!

Hi Jackie,

Actually, I was not aware of the article until you mentioned it! I simply went and did search on Web of Science, an electronic database available in my university library, and found the original paper there, including the full-text article.

The full-text article is also available at http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?CMD=search&DB=pubmed . This is on another database, PubMed, which in turn is accessible online at http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi, and is good for searching for recent publications on a topic of your interest.

PS "I can't wait until they "prove" that junk food is bad for us to eat and by changing to a living foods lifestyle we'll be able to heal ourselves...." That would be good, if they did!
