What should I not be eating in terms of grains, nuts, seeds? Are there any big NO-foods for eating raw? I have been researching a lot, however, I cannot seem to find any good answers.
Thanks! :o

Best answer I've ever seen was to just eat raw especially when you're first starting out. All those rules and "don'ts" will only confuse matters during the transitional period. Eat whatever you need to keep you from eating SAD foods be it grains, nuts, dehydrated foods, etc. (as long as they don't make you sick or feel poorly) and allow your body to gradually get adjusted to eating things more simply...THEN you can start cancelling stuff out accordingly as your body indicates.

OH...but there is a thing about eating peanuts raw...supposedly they're toxic...but there are some raw sites that sell "good" raw peanuts. As for grains, if you're intolerant to wheat or gluten, then you might want to proceed with caution although I've heard it said that soaking and sprouting them seems to make them okay for "some" who used to not be able to tolerate them in their cooked form.

Now when I am raw for 6 months(with a few slip-ups), I am planning to eliminate salt and oil(too concentrated fat that clogs drains-the more it should clog our intestines.) My main reason is that I do not feel full of energy and need to sleep even more than before.
But don't worry about it at the beginning - unless you think you like a sudden change and can keep it up. Otherwise - just be raw!

Hi Rawkinlocs -

I have been looking for these peanuts. Are you thinking they are mold free?

Hi Veganman,

That's what they claim on the website: http://www.rawfood.com/cgi-bin/order/index.cgi?id=390105021223&d=single&item_id=1076&c=Raw/Organic_Food&sc=Raw_Nuts/Seeds&tc=

...that they are aflatoxin-free. I've never tried them, though.

This I will tell you, so that you never know first hand how sick a kidney bean can make you. There is a toxin called, phytohaemagglutinin, and though it is not lethal, it is very nasty. I had always loved kidney beans on my salads before, and so I soaked a bunch of them, rinsed them, then pulverized them to make a soup in my Vita-mix. The taste alone would have warned me, but I added so many sweet veggies, that I had no clue what I was doing. I ate 4 cups of pea/carrot/kidney bean soup and was doubled over within the hour.

If you want to be extra careful, go to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and look up the "Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition" to check other mystery guests you may not want to ingest. I have eaten a ton of vegies and fruits with no problem. If it is a new item, I ask the grocer if it is safe to eat raw. The stock boy usually has no clue and has to run and get his mommy . . . but even the grocer may be unaware of some things. As to the kidney bean report I read, it said, "The difficulty in food analysis is that this syndrome is not well known in the medical community."

Yes, Goddess ... I have heard this about kidney beans also. They can make you very sick if they aren't fully cooked, as you now know. :(

I wonder if this is true for white kidney beans [cannellini] as well, or just the red ones?

I second Goddess' experience, but mine was with sprouted black beans. Never again. Vomiting every twenty minutes for 3 hours. Like clockwork. Very bizarre.

No black beans either? I just bought a bunch to soak and make a dip. Are all beans this way? Well I guess I'm glad I havn't tried the beans yet! Sounds awful. That sucks, sorry you guys had to find out the hard way.
