Hi friends, well, when I ate SAD, I would get sleepy after eating wheat and dairy, I've been vegetarian for over 12 years, and no eggs for 7, I did occasionally have a slice of cheese, maybe once a week or so.
So, most days, if I ate any kind of wheat, like a tortialla wrap or bread I would get sleepy.
Well, I"ve been 100% raw for 100% of the time, for over 2 months, and no weight loss (since the first week) and now I wake up each am, have a couple of oranges for breakfast and get very sleepy. this started about a week ago, no difference in food or anything, I'm eating.
If I take a nap, it's like a cooked food nap, I sleep for another 5 hours or so, after I just got up from sleeping 8 hours.
Now, at first, I thought it was detox, the first few times, but now it's every day, every meal, and been going on over a week.
Any ideas. I thought it might be the fruit since it wasn't organic, so I changed from pineapple to oranges(organic) and I still sleep, I tried banans instead, I still sleep, I tried kiwi, I sleep
this is a typical day for me
wake up after 8 hours sleep
have a cup of herbal tea, camomile, ginseng, mint
2 oranges or 1 cup pineapple
within 10 minutes feel sleepy,
go back to bed and sleep 5 more hours,
wake up
eat a couple cups of fruit,
feel sleepy again, but work anyway
about 6 to 8 hours
eat a large salad
greens
tomato
mushrooms
oil/lemon juice dressing
work
eat dinner
sometimes, nuts and dates, other times amond milk shake
usually about 1/4 to 1/2 cup nuts at night.
don't feel sleepy, up until 2 am, then to bed,
wake up at 10am starts all over again.
I've tried dropping out the nuts, and eating only greens and tomato and salad, I've tried dropping out the fruits, and I don't get sleepy, so I know it's the fruits, I've tried not eating a salad, just the fruit, and I'm still sleepy,
basically, I guess I am asking if anyone knows what might be making me choose to feel sleepy after eating fruits, after I've just slept 8 hours, it happens when ever I eat the fruits, morning, noon or night.
any ideas?
I'm baffled.

update on symptoms
I am also experiencing sniffles and an itchy throat and inside of ears, used to get this all the time when I ate dairy, now I'm not eating any dairy, but I'm experiencing these symptoms
yes, I'm sure it's detox, but it seems to be happening for a long time.

Well RawPriestess, my intitial thought was "why does it have to be diet related?"
Sounds like your well rested but under exercised, detox symtoms aside.
Sprinting, not jogging, opened up a whole new world to me. It's very efficient at prompting the body to dig up and form energy reserves. 3 sprints with walking in between/per quarter mile is a safe start. I don't know if you do any aerobics, but this anaerobic work, which is what you can fit into even the most busiest of schedules.
Just a thought. Unwarranted lethargy sucks.

why don't you try either green smoothies or a green juice in the morning? I've started experimenting with green juices (like Natalia Roses' Green Lemonade -- kale/collards, romaine or celery, apples and lemon) and it SERIOUSLY gives me the purest, lightest energy I have ever experienced from nutrition. I love green smoothies too, but I'm finding that after eating high raw, I'm not as hungry in the mornings as I used to be (when I was an oatmeal/cooked cereal addict).

I have learned recently the importance of pure water. I was neglecting this for about 2 years being raw. Just this past week I started drinking 100oz per day. What a difference! I drink one half my body weight in ounces (I weigh 204lbs hence about 100oz). I thought that because I ate raw I didnt need water, but thats not true. Try incorporating more water and see what happens over 10 days.
Peace.

I am so sorry that you are going through this. Just hang in there. It appears to me that there are two things that are happening to you right now. At least they are very familiar to me. After all I have dubbed myself "The Detox Queen". In fact I am on the tail end of some serious detox right now! LOL!!!
From what you are saying the symptoms of being tired after eating fruit is something that I had going on just before I left for Maine for the Alissa's Certification Classes. The only difference is that I would eat fruit first thing in the morning get the charge from it and the next thing I would eat would make me tired. This went on for about a week or so before I left. It stopped and I started my "have to have one or two avocado a day with tomatoe thing" until I left for Maine. My son came with me. Evidently he caught a little bug on the plane ride over. Well me being "The Detox Queen", my detox is usually triggered by whatever bug my little one catches and gives to me. By the next day I was sneezing and coughing, the day after it was worse. By Saturday morning early I woke up sneezing about 10x in a row with blood coming out of one nostril. Then my right ear was clogged all day long. By Saturday night the ear was not only clogged but in serious pain. Warm water on a wash cloth works wonders it actually popped it at one point. The next day Sunday I was in zombie mode because both ears were gone! I don't think I could have made it if it weren't for being in the mist of healing. By Monday (Graduation day) both eyes were fire engine red, both ears gone, and I felt as though I had on a mask from a masqurade ball. LOL Anywho, I came back to Chicago on Tuesday and I thought that I wouild not survive the decent in O'Hare because my left ear was ringing off my face!! One eye looked like it belonged to a helimonster it was so red...LOL!! I made it home got my little one settled and promptly went to sleep. Actually around 3pm my little one joined me on my bed and we both slept until about 10 the next morning. I did feel better, however my head ached, my sinuses were swollen around my left eye and that left eye...you guessed it...was red!! Because the eye was in pain I then realized that I had a rageing case of pink eye. Today is Saturday and I am just getting to the point were I can open it with the light on enough to type. It is still sensitive but it is on the mend. My cold symptoms are clearing and I guess all will be right with my world once I overcome a little pink eye. This is definitely detox. At least what I am going through. I say this because for years I would have rageing ear infections 4 or 5 times during the winter when I lived back east. I also had bouts of sinusitus(sp) and pink eye at least 3 or 4 times. Evidently, all three decided to join forces and attack all at once!!! LOL Was not a pleasant experience but I am glad I have gotten through the worst of it because I know that I will never have to go through it ever again!!!! Yeah!! :D
As for your symptoms I think that this is detox and I have to also agree with Ted maybe you need to up your water intake. I found myself saying just that when I was tired.
Way to go Raw Priestess you know your body enough to know HOW to figure out what it could be. This is more than half the battle when it come to detox. I have to believe your body was warning you of a detox comming on. So was mine. Hang in there!!! It is just another part of embracing the journey and coming out on the other side!!!

Hi RP,
Citrus affects some people negatively, because a lot of times it is not ripe enough. Are you sure the rest of the fruit you are eating is really ripe?
Have been eating a lot cleaner in general lately? In which case, it probably is just detox and will go away soon.
You might want to try eating your fruit mono for awhile so you can tell exactly what is affecting you.
Best to you,
Audrey

Is the ginseng a new addition? Anything new?
Are you satisfied on that amount of fruit? It looks like you've cut back a lot on calories...you may need more before you go this low. Perhaps going a bit slower on cutting back would help with lethargy; work your way down.
Could the fruit be contaminated or have some sort of bacteria? Even organic vegetables and fruit can be contaminated.
Could anything you've been consuming, such as nuts, etc., have come into contact with dairy? ARe your symptoms similar to when you've eaten dairy? Most products have it noted on the label if it's been processed with dairy products for those with allergies, but not all.

thank you all so very much,
I think I will up my physical activity, and my water, those are the two things that I "feel" it might be.
it COULD be contaminated fruit, but I've changed what I eat, and where I buy it several times.
the ginseng is not new, I've been drinking it for a long time, and the chamomile is organic and fresh, Dragggon picks it each morning, I've tried the day with and without it, herbal tea, I mean.
I was thinking and I did do one thing different the last couple of weeks that it might be.
I have stopped taking my probiotics, enzymes and vitamin B's.
I hadn't taken any suppliments for ever, then about a month or so ago, I started taking them, then when It didn't seem like they were doing anything, I stopped, and now I'm tired.
that is the ONLY thing I can think of, so I will go back on my suppliments, and drink more water, and start some exercising.
thank you all so much.

Well, I just took some B's and had a big glass of water, and I'm feeling quite a bit better already, so I don't know which it is, but I'm gonna' keep doing it,
Todd, thank you so much for telling me about your water ideas.
I used to drink alot of water, and crunch ice, then when I didn't need so much ice, I wasn't drinking so much water, I've been eating fruits, which is a good thing, but I do know that I DID cut down my water consupmtion quite a bit.
thanks to all of you sweet people who have contributed to this thread,
Thanks so very much.

RP -
is this a new reaction to fruit? It sounds kind of like hypoglycemia....

Hi veganman, yep totally new, never had this reaction before, just the last week to two weeks, been getting worse each day, I've tried lots of different fruits too, just in case the pineapple had some preservative or came into contact with something, then made sure to buy only 100% organic, locally grown, etc.
I did realise I was drinking less water, after reading Todd's post above, and that I had stopped taking my suppliments, which I was only taking for 2 weeks anyway.
So, yep this is very new.

SwishTN, thanks for asking, well that detox symptom or whatever appears to have gone away.
I didn't start taking suppliments again, but I did up my water, and make sure to add in more walking and running up our two steps that we have in our house, funny when I started raw, I could barely get up those two steps, Dragggon used to have to help me, and it took me a while, now I just run up and down them liike a kid. LOL
but the tiredness after fruit is gone now, now I only get tired after eating at potlucks, or if I get something with Braggs in it (like at a potluck) LOL, I've always had that reaction to MSG.
So, I am assuming the tiredness after fruit was a weird detox symptom, since it has gone away. Like MAGIC. LOL
thanks for thinking of me, that was sweet of you.

RP,
thanks for updating on this! I think this is a really interesting phenomenon and it's good you let us know your detox symptom b/c I think other people might have it as well but wouldn't think this is detox but some kind of weird food reaction.
Good to hear you are better now!

Try berries in the AM, then a brisk walk or some other sort of exercise for 30-45 min. Maybe your bodies natural insulin is responding with excessive output to accomodate high sugar content fruit.
 If it must be oranges in the am, then just eat a few slices plus a handfull of nuts and get to steppin'.
Check your sleep accomodations. You may not be getting enough rest and sleep in the right phase at night due to: natural stimulants in the tea, too much day time sleep, unnecessary white noise, heavy dinner etc...
Be sure your bedding is comortable, go for organic coton linens, rotate mattress, get new pillows, take a bath at night, block out street lights, consider meditation before bed time remove electronics from bedroom (or at least unplug) before you slumber.
Consider AM smoochies ;)
Also consider grazing on 5-7 small snacks thru the day instead of 3 designated meal times. The menu can be mono or varied just keep it small in portion with lots of water throughout the day.
 VISUALIZE A SUCCESFUL OUTCOME WITH RESPECT WEIGHTLOSS and VITALITY :D

this is a typical day for me
wake up after 8 hours sleep
have a cup of herbal tea, camomile, ginseng, mint
2 oranges or 1 cup pineapple
within 10 minutes feel sleepy,
go back to bed and sleep 5 more hours,
I think it may be the camomile in the tea, perhaps. I think that that is supposed to be very relaxing.
BTW I noticed that you are wiccan (from another thread). I'm on the fringe of wicca and I'm surprised that they aren't into alternative diets more like veganism or raw food. Is that your experience too? I will do a search on wicca and "raw food" or vegan and I will get a lot less hits than I would expect from a religion that is so heavily into herbs for healing.
