I never thought I'd ever see one of these, even our tiny oriental store doesn't have them. But I went into Walmart yesterday, and there were a dozen sitting on the shelf!

So, I had my first Thai Baby coconut yesterday. I was very surprised when I opened it up and it was full to the brim with juice!

That's awesome. I still want to try one of those- everyone seems to rave about them.

Me too. I still have to try talking to more of the grocery stores around here to see if they will order me some. Our Walmart doesn't even have produce, LOL!

So a word of caution for anyone who hasn't had young coconut -- I inadvertantly bought one. The package just said "coconut." I shook it to hear the milk to see if it was ripe but didn't hear any. And it wasn't brown on the outside, so I figured the store "peeled" it or something. I brought it home, cracked it open -- milk flooded my kitchen. And the inside was gelatinous and purple-ish. I brought it back to the store thinking it was bad. Turns out that it was a young coconut. Just wanted to let people know what to expect. I wish I knew.

I have been getting young coconuts at our local Central Market for $1.98 each. Well I found an Asian market a few towns away and was able to get them for $1.09. But I don't know how long they keep in the fridge? Does anyone know? Thanks!

Hi, I would not keep them more then a week in the fridge. Tehy last longer in water, some people put them in bug buckets of water in the fridge. I go through mine so quickly, 9 a week !

Just a note for opening them, hack at it once then drain water out into a big glass. The proceed with cutting it open.

Young coconuts only stay good for a week after you buy them? I thought they stayed good for weeks... :( I haven't been able to find them, so I thought if I had to go to a surrounding city to get them I could just go once a month and stock up... I guess not?
