Is Sushi considered raw or not? Ive gotten conflicting answers. I mean yes its not cooked but hasn't it been frozen.I have this dynamite Japanese market by my house that sells sushi grade fish by the pound inexpensivley, they sell it mostly to sushi restaurants in the neighborhood but i've been buying it and adding it to my diet and it's delicious. But they buy sushi grade fish at the fish market that has been frozen. As I understand most sushi at restaurants has been frozen, except at certain really high end places. I'm trying to eat all raw though, is this sushi a good addition to my diet or not, what do you think?

damon, hello and welcome and congrats on starting to eat raw.

I'm not certain if sushi is raw/raw or not...but some raw fooders do eat sushi and other raw forms of meat, dairy, etc. But this is a raw vegetarian-based forum and thus we do not advocate the consumption of raw (or cooked) animal products.

I believe you mean sashimi, which is the raw fish

sushi is the nori sheets rolled around a vinegar rice then stuffed with different items, such as sashimi, avocado, crab, veggies etc.

there is raw sushi that we make in the raw lifestly, we use raw nori sheets, and instead of cooked rice, you can use soaked rice (to make it soft) or we often use chopped up parsnips or cauliflower to mimic the look and texture of rice, then you add some fresh avocado, or carrot or mushrooms, what ever you like, add a delightful ginger dipping sauce, or nama shoyu (a raw soy sauce) and you have raw sushi

But Rawkinlocs is right, this is a raw vegan board, so we dont advocate eating any meat or dairy, or animal products here, we will be happy to help you take most cooked recipes and turn them into raw substitutes, just like the sushi.

However, if eating raw fish works for you, then that is fine, we just don't get into discussing it on this board.

Good to have you here.

Thanks RP, I was about to correct that too.. Sushi is not raw fish. Sushi actually refers to the rice. Technically, sushi is not even the nori rolls. The word sushi refers to the rice (flavored with vinegar). It is usualyl eaten cold. But more often as we see it, it is used with nori to make rolls filled with vegetables (or whatever you choose). It is a common misconception.

If you want to eat raw fish, then you are more than welcome to do so. However, I would not... raw fish can contain harmful bacteria and parasites. People have had severe parasites from eating raw fish. I read an article of a man who went to the doctor complaining of severe headaches. The doctor examined the man, and saw something squirming underneath the skin on his head. They operated to find parasites in his brain. He was oriental, and ate raw fish during his entire life.
