I think I got food poisoning. It started Friday morning with a stomache ache and indigestion, then yesterday I had dry heaves and diarreah. I ate all my normal raw stuff on Thursday:green smoothie, salad, mango, young coconut, this is stuff I eat regularly, so the only thing I can think is that something must have been contaminated somehow. I can barely keep liquids down, hopefully things will be better today. Anyhow, the CDC site suggest the following for food as soon as one can begin eating again:

"Consider eating rice, wheat, breads, potatoes, cereals (low-sugar cereals), lean meats, and chicken (not fried) to start. "

Obviously I will not be eating those things! Does anyone have any raw suggestions for easy-on-the-stomach, first foods? Orange juice seems too citrus-y. I was able to keep down miso broth in warmed water, which has not caused the same discomfort as plain water.

I do not anticipate being able to eat until tomorrow at the earliest. Any suggestions besides what to do in the meantime besides rest and drink fluids?

This is NOT how I envisioned spending Mother's Day this year.

Sorry that you are feeling so bad.
Perhaps you could add some nice dry crispy crackers when you are taking the miso broth to start with.
Hope it passes soon.

((((((((((((((((hugs)))))))))))))))) I know the feeling swingbolder! This happened to me when I ate out a few months ago since then I haven't been eating out so the raw transition has been so easy because of this. I didn't know you could get this while eating raw! omg you are scaring me!

I did this:
Don't eat anything, just water little by little, keep yourself hydrating! Don't eat ANYTHING! The body naturally will detox yourself that's why you are not keeping anything in your body! Just don't let it dehydrate. If you have stomach cramps drink chamollie tea, this will help with the pain and will heal your tummy!

(((((More hugs))))) keep us updated!!!

how many mangos did you eat I forgot to ask...

Be careful to eat too many these cause a laxative effect!

Sip some chilled pedialyte if your not opposed to the chem processing, I'm just thinking about your electrolytes and dehydration

You might also wanna try nibbling on frozen grapes. Suck on them eat em
just for blood sugar sake.

or maybe a little peanut butter on a raw cracker, very little at a time, something just to mellow your tummy

Sorry to hear this

:o Everyday is mothers day in my world. It's all about you SB!!! :D

GINGER TEA!!! cut some ginger root and put in warm water let it steep. GINGER TEA releives any discomfort to the stomach.

Feel better soon!

Add honey or agave for sweetness...

I agree, we all have gone through this around here (hubby, 2 daughters and myself) and mine even advices chamomille tea if tummy hurts. But just water in little sips will do. The body will naturally detox by itself.

I hope you feel better swingbolder.

I feel like crap as well. I have been having major diahrreha, shivers and a stomach ache. Are these symptoms of detox as I have only been mostly raw for a little over a week? If not detox could it be food poisoning?

I am going to have some ginger or chamomile tea.

I am getting discouraged....

Keep yourself hydrated, obviously. Bananas and applesauce are very gentle on the stomach.

Sorry you're not feeling well. I second the bananas and applesauce as first foods. It's part of the BRAT (bananas, rice, applesauce, toast) that we rec for young children with emesis and diarrhea in the hospital.

I would not use the apple sauce at this tme as it is a natural laxative all on it's own. I would stick with the frozen grapes.. Maybe even some green juice or smoothie with mild greens... if you feel the need for food. but I would tend toward nothing. I do know the ginger tea is great for tummy. I have added a touch of lemon also to my ginger tea. If the miso soup has helped continue with it.

you could maybe try taking a grapefruit seed extract tablet. it has really profound anti-microbial properties. i got food poisoning in costa rica and took gse and felt better.

just a thought.

Oh Swingbolder, I am so sorry you are feeling horrible, ugh!

well, if you look at the list of foods that are suggested to eat, you will see they are very alkaline, all illness in our bodies, is due to being too acidic, and all medications, change your system to alkalie, tums, aspirin, etc.

So, that is why the miso broth helped it added alkalie to your system.

I would say drink lots of water as much as you care to, dry sauna to get out the toxins, and if you are at all hungry, which I doubt you will be, drink more of the miso broth, anything that will get you alkalized.

fruit will alkalize the body, but only if it is ripe, and by ripe, I meant ripe, not just picked, or from the grocery store green then allowed to start to ferment on your counter.

So, rest, rest, rest, dry sauna if you can, if you can't then hot baths, or hot showers, if you can stand up, and drink lots of water, and miso broth, and

Thank you SO MUCH for your suggestions everyone, you guys are the best. . . I have been able to keep down water, miso broth and young coconut water all day, 8 oz or so at a time so that is a BIG improvement over yesterday. . . it seems I'm on the upswing. tomorrow maybe I will try a green smoothie, albeit one much thinner than I usually drink. This is the first time this has ever happened to me and the thing I will most remember is how TIRED I am. . . so weak. I guess the body is working hard to expel whatever it is I ingested.

how many mangos did you eat I forgot to ask...

Just one, but I can normally eat 2 or 3 in one sitting, they do not bother me at all in terms of my digestion.

I'm so sorry that has happened to you. The worst is those dry heaves.

The best thing I've done is drinking some kind of herbal tea, a very mild herbal tea such as chamomile or mint, so that when I do vomit it's not just the harsh acid coming up. The coconut water sounds like it is helping, plus taking care of any lost electrolytes.

Hope you feel better and happy Mom's day!

You're tired because your body loses a LOT of electrolytes from vomitting and diarrhea. I've had food poisoning twice and both times it was an exhausting experience. Pedialite, though not raw, is very good for restoring your body's electrolyte balance -- you seem to be on the road to recovery now, but I'd recommend that to speed up your recovery if you ever get food poisoning again.

If it's any consolation, I seem to have the same symptoms you do but I doubt it's food poisoning since nobody else in the family seems to have it. I didn't eat much yesterday. Only a few nuts for breakfast. We went to a Mexican restaurant after that, but had a late lunch so we didn't eat dinner. Nobody was hungry. My problems began just as I was heading to bed. Actually it was a few hours before I ever got to bed because I couldn't get out of the bathroom.

Now my stomach seems to be okay but my throat is sore from throwing up so much and I sort of have a headache around one eye. We actually celebrated Mother's Day yesterday in combination with my mom's birthday which is actually on the 9th. So today I've spent most of the day in bed trying to rest. Daughter keeps waking me up to show me the paintings she has been doing. Blah!

I consider myself an expert at getting food poisioning now! I lost count how many times i've had it in the past few years! Let me tell you what really works great for me! I rest & wait ahile before trying to keep anything down but try to have tiny sips of water & try to throw everything up to get it out! Once it feels like nothing is really coming up anymore I will have a doubleshot of fresh wheatgass juice. Note: it NEVER stays down! LOL just try to hold it in as long as possible though! About an hour or so later I feel sooo much better & I can tell i'm finally getting over it! Usually I will try to have young coconut water for the electrolites & nutrients & stuff after that. By the next day i'm fine! I have had it twice now without the wheatgrass & it lastes MUCH longer.

It sounds like you have a stomach virus. I was lucky to get it twice within the past few months. It was going around in my office. My doc said to only drink Gatorade for 24-48 hours and no food at all. He said your system needs time to heal. The first time I ate too early and wham, the diarrhea came right back. The second time I made sure not to eat at all and it really worked. Within 2 days I was completely back to normal. I had the extreme weakness too. Could not get off the bed for 3 days except to go to the bathroom !

Hope you're feeling better by now! I use "activated charcoal" capsules from the health food store. About three years ago I had my worst food poisoning ever! I couldn't even keep the capsules down and I was unable to keep even a teaspoon of water down for over 24 hours. After a few hours of trying the capsules I finally thought to empty the caps into a teaspoon and swallow it that way. I feel that it probably saved my life as I really dehydrated and I was totally out of it. Just last week one of my co-workers had a terrible bout with her tummy which we thought was food poisoning. The next day I had it really bad also (although we didn't eat any of the same food). It's hard to tell if it's bad food or some type of virus???? We use either the ginger tea or peppermint tea all the time for upset tummies or indegestion.

Blessings Swingbolder for a quick recovery!

not washing and scrubbing veggies that you peel can cause food poisoning. Many people don't scrub down a pineapple or a canteloupe or a mango before peeling it. If the bacteria is on the surface, then when you peel it your knife drags it across to the part you eat. Maybe it was like that with your mango or coconut? I have heard it is especially the case for canteloupes, that their netting harbors many bacteria, molds, etc., and the effects can similate the 24 hour flu. In fact, most of the time people think they got a 24-hour flu they in fact got food poisoning because 24 hour flus really don't exist. Most food poisoning happens in our own homes. Also, did you eat any raw almonds, they do posess some risk for salmonella.

Even raw foodies have to be careful with food safety. Another thing that is not safe is uncovered food in your fridge.

Good luck, other than bananas, maybe some soaked and blended buckwheat, then you could add something to flavor it for a porridge.

I had food poisoning on Mothers Day too - at 5 months pregnant to boot! Lucky US!

My midwife suggested Berberine extract. I haven't tried it but if you research it on line it looks good. Berberine is found in blueberries, goldenseal, and I think, grapes. She gave me a recipe for a sort of blueberry tea that you make by boiling dried blueberries and straining it... don't have it at my fingertips but I'll look.

Cheers,
