Ugh! I ordered a single shot of wheatgrass at Wild Oats in Tampa, and they gave me more like a triple shot (just to be nice I guess, they obviously don't drink it). It's been a while since I've had it, but I thought it was pretty big, I thought they may have mixed it with something. They didn't.

Needless to say when I got back to St.Pete I vomited wheatgrass juice. ICK!!!!!

When I first started working at Hippocrates, I was so excited about being able to have as much wheatgrass as I wanted for free that I went crazy and drank 4 ounces at once. I felt so nauseated and from then on I hated wheatrgrass (I used to love the taste prior to this incident). I would almost vomit every time I drank it. Now I still don't love it, but I don't mind it either.

I'm glad I've read this. I've never had wheatgrass yet, so now I know to take it easy the first time I drink it. Thanks!

I'd probably start with a half a shot, unless you are getting ALOT of green already.

As far as the weight loss, I have only been on the wagon 100% since April 15th. I was on and off during the winter, so I gained weight. I haven't weighed in a while, but I feel more compact.

I am more in love with raw food than ever! Before this time I couldn't imagine NEVER going back, now I can't imagine EVER going back!

I love raw food to the (apple) core.

I have tried wheatgrass once, that was enough for me.

I think that our body will tell us by our desire, what it is we are supposed to consume, and if it tastes yucky, we aren't supposed to eat it.

Just my opinion.

The first time I had it, I had a single shot and that was more than enough for me. The second time, I had two shots and drank it with no problem. Both times I had the wheatgrass mixed with apple juice, which was really yummy.

My two-cents' worth re: my experience with wheat grass (for whatever it's worth):

Long before I was raw, at one point, I drank wheat grass everyday for a period of five years. Then, I started tapering off. Before I knew it, I was hardly drinking it at all -- just when I felt I needed it.

When I first went raw (I got my start with raw at Optimum Health Institute in San Diego), they were suggesting 4 oz. of wheat grass a day. I'm here to tell you, THANK GOD I listened to my own inner intuition and only drank 4 oz. the whole week I was there. For me, a little wheat grass goes a LONG way, and EVERY TIME someone, trying to be nice, has offered me MORE and I've drank it, I've ALWAYS been sorry. [The OHI experience was ultimately wonderful, so the wheat grass thing was not a big deal for me. The experience still changed my life for the better dramatically and gave me my start in raw for which I will be eternally grateful.]

I've DEFINITELY felt the benefits of it when I've been "up for it," but now I get the same or similar rush from other things; i.e., green smoothies, E3-Live, ginger shots, etc. I think I have figured out, and in my humble opinion, wheat grass is a very subjective experience. What might work for one person may not work for another. I'm not a wheat grass expert; I just know what my experience has been. Some say it's overblown, some swear by it -- the jury's still out for me -- although sometimes it really does the trick, but then again, so do some other things like ginger shots. What can I say? I AM, however, definitely of the opinion that it's great for people with serious health issues.

And, to be fair, for those 5 years, I really KNOW that it helped me. [I was drinking 1 oz. a day. Any more than that just didn't work for me. I knew some people who were drinking 4+ oz. a day and loving it.]
[Also, I put it on my face and it helped my skin TREMENDOUSLY!]

yadda, yadda, yadda.

thanks for letting me share...

vicki :)

Amberly, great thread here! Thanks for bringing it up! I had forgotten my experience with wheatgrass until now...

I worked at a pizza joint in Seattle, and hung out at the juice bar around the corner. The owner was an Olympic medalist and loved wheatgrass. He swore by it. He even raised money (for whales I think) by skating on 6-wheel rollerblades down the coast from Seattle to LA! He wore a shirt that said "Powered by Wheatgrass!" He drank it many times a day, every day.

I tried a shot and felt very sick to my stomach. I wanted to heave, but didn't. Yeach!

Several months later, maybe 6 months, I thought I'd try it again. This time I made sure to have some other food in my stomach, since maybe it was too harsh on its own ... NOPE! Same sick feeling.

I never tried it after that, though I did wonder if it was causing some type of detox reactions and that was the nausea I was sensing.

I am intrigued now as to how my body would handle it. I'll have to search it out and try it! I'll let you know!

Crystal Rose -- you used wheatgrass on your FACE? How? What effect did you notice? Also, I am VERY curious as to your ginger shots ... how did you juice the ginger, how much did you drink, straight or mixed, what effect did it have? I love ginger, but what you're talking about sounds intense!

May I ask everybody here how they consumed/consume their wheatgrass? Not everybody consumes it the same way and this may (partly) influence people's experiences of the stuff. i.e. did/do you retain it in the mouth for a good amount of time, mixing it with saliva, or did/do you just drink it down?

Great contribution to the thread, BTW, Vicki.

When I drink wheatgrass by itself, I sip it, so it gets pretty well mixed with saliva. When I've mixed it with apple juice, I've had bigger drinks so it wasn't getting as mixed with saliva. Either way I was fine, but I can't imagine gulping wheatgrass plain...

...of course, if one chooses to follow the Wigmore approach, one could 'ingest' wheatgrass from the other end, so-to-speak. Not quite the same, I grant you, but some absorption of nutrients will nonetheless still occur, without nausea issues. Obviously, this approach is not very well-suited to your local juice bar ;)

Dear Mango Man,
The lady who originally turned me on to wheat grass explained to me that it was really good for your face and skin. At that point in time, my face was severely damaged from overdoing it in the sun and from tanning indoors for 10 years. So, after I'd take my shot, I'd take the residual liquid in the plastic shot container and spread it all over my face. Rather than running around with a green face all day, I'd wait around 10 minutes, then take my aloe vera lotion and put it on my face which mixed with the wheat grass, so it was on there the rest of the day but just not real evident. I did this little ritual every day for 5 years, and at the end of the five-year period, my face looked 10 years younger than it did when I started the practice. Miraculous.

Re: the ginger shots, there's a health food store in Malibu, called the Vitamin Barn that has a juice bar and sells "wellness shots" which are ginger that has been juiced in a wheat grass juicer (separate juicer from the one they use for wheat grass!) and they add to that drops of oregano oil and garlic oil. And, YES, it's QUITE INTENSE, AND it gives you a RUSH like nothing I've ever experienced. I just had one yesterday after not having had one for awhile and I literally felt HIGH, both immediately afterwards and for the rest of the day. Before, when I was doing it, I wasn't raw yet, so experiencing it while raw was incredible. That stuff'll cure anything that ails you. Now I understand why I went thru a detox before I went raw when I was drinking these shots every day.

Thanks for asking!

And thanks, everyone else, for a wonderful thread. :)

Sincerely,
Vicki

Awesome Crystal Rose / Vicki!!

Can't wait to try my own ginger shots! Hmm, not sure where to get oregano oil and garlic oil... I can steep garlic and oregano is olive oil for a while .. would this work?

Oh, and thanks for the face info! Even though I don't go tanning, just being outside without sunscreen is damaging. If could prevent future skin cancer, then it sounds like a good thing to do! If I ever get in the habit of drinking wheat grass - I'll give it a go!
