I was making the flax cracker recipe from "living on raw food" the other day. she says to let them soak 4 hrs. or overnight. But I couldn't get to them till well past...more like 24 hrs. and when I looked they were growing mold on top. So I tried again. I started them at 6pm and couldn't get to them til about noon the next day...about 18 hrs. When I checked them at about 8AM they were still OK but I didn't have lemon so I put them in the fridge, covered til I could get back and make the crackers. I stored them IN the food processor so I couldn't check all around for mold, but the bottom had some condensation on it. I just made them thinking the fridge would have stopped any mold growth for those few hrs (?). I haven't tried any of the crackers yet...but I started to worry a little (especially since I just got some email re: some kid dying from mold in an old pancake mix because he had a mold allergy...and "snopes" says it's TRUE). I didn't notice any mold when I added the ingredients...and I guess I'm just being a worrier. Does anyone think that 18 hrs. (the last 4 being in the fridge) is just TOO long for flax seeds to soak and still be OK? Thanks!

Sorry I can't help out. But I hope you don't keel over!!!!
Maybe rinse them well before using.
Report back. If not, we may have to call 911 for ya. ;)

I do not soak mine. I grind them in the blender and make the crackers straight away.

I do the same as Sport., as I don't like the whole seed, and can't get as much nutrition from them whole...if you want them whole, you can soak for just a few minutes, or longer depending on your time frame. It's not really critical.

I think that I read the 15mins is enough so take a half hour to be sure.
