View Full Version : Anyone else get sulfer burps? Is something wrong 'down there?'

It is an odd thing ... I expected some increased gas as my body adjusted to the new eating diet (I'm on Day 26 after a 10 day Master Cleanse) and have certainly met my expectation ;) but I am confused by my recent sulfer burps.

This morning I noticed some when I awoke. Have had a few today (my 3.5 year old son was standing near me when I tried to muffle a small burp - said my breath smelled like eggs) and now this evening I have more. I looked at my dehydrated stuff (dates, figs, raisons) and they don't mention anything but the fruit. I can't think of where my sulfer is coming from, other than what is naturally occuring in foods. I have been 100% raw, other than a few samplings of meat from wild harvested animals (related to my class at a wilderness school).

 I searched the forum here and couldn't find anything. Anyone else have this occur? Is this some natural process in my body adjusting to this new diet, or could there be a problem? What do you think?

Thanks in advance!

Hi MangoMan, Im not sure if this helps but it sounds to me like the dried fruit is fermenting in your stomach and that is causing the sulphur burps to happen. Try staying away from the dried fruits for a few days and see if you notice a difference and then re introduce them again, then you will truely know for sure. Hope this helps. Blessings.

lol - yes, I get gas if I eat dried fruit - I find figs are the worst culprits, closely followed by apricots.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if you find the problem disappears once you get into the habit of eating more fresh fruit than dried fruit and making sure that whatever dried fruit you do eat is first soaked for a few hours. Also, be sure to chew dried fruit particularly thoroughly (which is a good general habit, anyway - read about Fletcherism to learn more on this - www.soilandhealth.org/02/0203CAT/fletcher.pdf).

Hey thanks!

I have been enjoying figs a lot. Of course, the only ones available right not are dried. They are organic and not sulfered .. but what do I know? :) I'll avoid the dried stuff for a few days, and let you know. Thanks for the heads-up Karen! When I was eating SAD, I didn't have much to compare to since probably many things weren't digesting well!

Arky, thanks for the link to your other comment! I would think it odd to take a fresh fruit and dry it only to turn around and eat it right away ... but there are some yummy fruits that can not be found in the winter/spring any other way. I'll try rehydrating them. I hadn't ever thought of that before! Regarding the article .. whoa! It's a long one. I'll peruse it today, thanks!!

Oh, don't get too hung up on reading it all in detail - the essence of it is basically that, in the author's view (and there is very good support for his view) it is extremely important to chew your food VERY thoroughly if you wish to achieve a high state of health and energy.

It reduces digestive effort by breaking the food down to smaller particles, by increasing the contribution of salivary enzymes to the digestive process, and (in the case of dense or dehydrated foods) increasing the relative hydration level of the food as a consequence of mixing with good levels of saliva. As well as reducing digestive effort (a major energy drain on the body), good chewing and mixing of good levels of salivary enzymes, will assist assimilation of the maximum possible amount of nutrients from the food being consumed.

Just thought I"d let you know -- way back when I first started raw, I too had a nasty time with that sulfur belch. I never did figure out what it was and I still eat dried fruit just like I did then. It did not last forever! I seem to think it was something inside that was being cleaned out and you know maybe it did get cleaned out.

Oh, I also remember reading somewhere that oranges were suppose to help.

Hope that helps.

Well, if you've been raw a long time now and consequently have faster digestive transit than you used to, then the duration of time that dried fruit would be likely to stay in your gut would, I imagine, decrease quite significantly. Or your experience could be due to something entirely different, but I can tell you that if I overdo it on dried (non-rehydrated) figs I get predictable gas every time.

Arky, the chew-chew method was something I practiced long ago when I was studying Macrobiotics. It is good to have it brought out again.

Regarding figs: This is so good to hear because I have been eating a lot of dehydrated dates. Well, not a LOT, but certainly more than I used to! I'll curtail those and see what happens as well.

BDraw - Glad to know I ain't the only one! I'll give oranges a try .. though I really am not called to orange consumption right now.

Hey, come to think of it, I haven't had barely any gas today! I did shy away from dehydrated fruits, mostly. I did make Alyssa's morning muffins yesterday and have been eating them today. Elsewise, just fresh foods.

Hmm, thanks everyone for chiming in here!! :D

I would say drink lots of water if you are going to eat dried fruit, and I would eat lots of greens too.

I only eat a few pieces of dried fruit, raisens at all, and I never have these burps, well, actually I never burp, now that I'm raw. LOL

Just thought of that. How cool!!!

Ginger and peppermint would be other good additions to the diet to calm minor digestive maladies.

@ Rawpriestess: Greens rule! :)

I was just talking with my friend about this. I asked him if he ever had that happen before. I used to get the egg burps and farts alot when I was a child. He thought it had something to do with undigested egg, but I don't always remember eating eggs when I had it.
