View Full Version : Posting photos in posts - How to do it...

I need to test something first...

Okay all,

The thing about posting photos within posts is that, unlike the avatars or photo journalling area, the image has to be in the form of a URL for example:

http: / / www.somewebhostingcompany.com/myrawfood.jpg

In order to accomplish this, the image must be uploaded somewhere on the Internet; it can NOT be uploaded directly from your computer hard drive as with the photo gallery/journal area or avatars. I know, it's a bummer, especially if you don't have a means to upload photos to the web.

Those of you who currently have websites up somewhere and a web host, you can upload to your directory and post the URL.

But some may not have that or even know first thing about it. But there ARE places online that will give you a certain amount of space for uploading pictures from your computer, digital camera, etc. for FREE!

Such places as Yahoo.com (if you have a Yahoo email account with them which are also free); Fotki.com; Picturetrail.com...just to name a few.

You could either directly put the URL of the image once you have your pics uploaded to those free places as I did above and this is accomplished by:

1. Right-click on the photo and when the little drop-down menu options pops up, select "Copy Image Location".

2. Once it's been copied, come here and in your post, click on the little yellow box that has a little image of a mountain and a sun which is located right between the 3 bullets and the little blue globe with the chain link. You'll have a box pop up prompting you to enter the URL of the image.

3. You will then paste the URL into that box and select "Ok". OR...you can simply paste the URL directly into the post but at the very beginning of the URL put [IMG] and at the end of it put [ \ IMG ] (the spaces are just so it'll show up without trying to place an image here in my example).

Now, with some places such as Yahoo, etc., they may not allow you to link from their site in that manner and sometimes rather than your image showing up, some default image with the name of the site will be there instead.

If this is the case, then rather than trying to embed photos within your post, you could simply provide the LINK to the site that is hosting your photos and we can just click on it and be taken to that site and view photos of your food pics, family pics, etc.

I know this may be an inconvenience, but Alissa has made it clear that she didn't intend for the journalling area to be used to host all the variety of photos we have in there now. It was meant for photos of YOU as you go through your journey to raw.

Perhaps she and/or the board Admin may set up one general area for posting pics of food or something but until then, let's try to comply.

If anyone has any questions or needs clarity on the instructions I've provided, post here or PM me.

Thanks for your cooperation! :)

Cherie

Thank you Rawkinlocs because I was about to ask this same question- I tried to do it from my picture program and it won't work. I use Shutterfly a lot and I will try to just upload through them and try it again- thanks for the update! I have already, sadly, erased my food photos from the journaling area... but it would be nice to have a place just for them :D I know it is out of your hands Cherie- but I have to tease hoping Alissa will figure something better out... I think the food pics are way too important to be "lost in the boards..."

Thanks again :D

Out of curiousity...I attached a photo to a recent recipe thread (not in the journal section) by using the manage attachments button that appears below the reply box when you are typing out your thread. This allowed me to upload an attachment. Should we not be doing that?

Meaning, would Alissa prefer us to use photos that we are hosting online, rather than uploading an attachment within a post? I want to make sure, since now I am worried that I did this wrong. I understand the web space issue. Space is always at a premium, especially on a popular site that already requires a lot of bandwidth...(I know how it must be costly for Alissa, and this site is free for us to use, so we should be considerate.) :)

Cassy.

Cassy, I could just kiss you!! I'm gonna delete my post then because I had NO idea about that little doo-hickey of a feature!!

Wow, that's cool! I'm guessing that's fine...hmmmm....you pose a good question though about the bandwidth etc. I'm not exactly sure. I only posted what I did because of what happens when you click on that little mountain thingy, not because of any preference made known to me by Alissa.

I think I'll leave what I wrote and leave what you wrote and then when she returns she (or the Admin) can check out this thread and let us know. But for now, the EASIEST way is definitely the "Manage Attachments" button.

So, for those of you who aren't familiar with that as I wasn't, when you're posting and have the text box up and all, scroll all the way to the bottom and you'll see a little box with all these little options in it. Choose that Manage Attachments button and a box will pop up and you "Browse" to find the image on your hard drive and upload it.

Thanks again Cassy! ;)
