View Full Version : 10 people needed to bring Alissa's book into Ottawa, Cda!

I was so pleased to see Alissa's book on Amazon.com because she swore a couple years back or so that she would never go that route and that we would only be able to get her book buying directly from her. Well, was I ever so pleased to see that she's changed her mind! <yea> Except, we're not all the way there. Her company says that they will only do this if there is an order for 10 books. So although one step forward, yes, but we're also one step back. Hopefully not for long, though.
So thought I'd post this here in case there were others in Ottawa Canada who wanted the book, too, without the horrendous expense of shipping/handling along with and on top of currency conversion. I don't mind authors getting money for books, it's all the rest that gets one's goat, esp. when every extra penny is so hard to come by! <g>
So any other Ottawans out there, or residents of the NCR (Gloucester, Orleans, Hull, etc., etc.) the Singing Pebble on Main Street next to the fabulous Wheat Berry natural food store and the super Green Door vegan restaurant (and across from St. Paul's University), just 9 more people besides me needed to request this book in order for SingingP to be able to place an order!
The bookstore info is:
Singing Pebble Books
(613) 230-9165
202A Main Street,
Ottawa, ON K1S 1C6
It's where I always go when I want to order a book because once I ordered something directly from the States and it was a terrible experience. The book wasn't even a proper one, it was cerloxed! Its list price started out at about US$17 dollars or so but I ended up paying over a whopping Cdn$48.00! And I was lucky. Apparently the Canadian govt randomly chooses who they'll demand border fees, or whatever they're called, for things coming into the country! I escaped this fee that time, but I won't ever buy a book that way again. But as I said, the long wait may be close to over. If just 9 other people want the book, Singing Pebble can bring it in. And it'll only cost us the price of the conversion plus taxes!!!! <yippeee>
So, pls, pls pass the word along if you or anyone else is anywhere near the area and can take advantage of doing this!
Thanks all! So looking forward to finally having Alissa's book one of these days!! :oD

We should be able to chip in and send one with DVD. It cost almost as much as to send as the cost of both. All things are possible with a will. :)

Good luck in your quest we ( RP and me) totaly understand what you mean it cost more and takes longer to ship to Canada than anywhere else we ship to.

Yep, just to let you know, we mail books all over the world every day, and sending to Canada is a lot more than expensive than most other countries.
good luck with your quest, I'm sure you'll make it.

Isn't that such a shame. We should be friends with Canada rather then enemies... Seems this mail thing just keeps us separated. Shaking head as to why things are as they are sometimes..

Hi!
I've posted over at SimplyRaw's forum, too (Natasha's group here in Ottawa, http://www.simplyraw.ca/phpBB/index.php). All that is needed is for 10 people at least (9 others besides me) to call up the Singing Pebble and put in a request for this book and then once it comes in, we go in and pick up our copy.
This is what I do as a normal practice. When I see a book I like, I go to Amazon.com to get the ISBN and call Singing Pebble and have them ship it in using that number. Alissa's is the first book, though, that I can't get as she requires that 10 be ordered at once. All other raw books I've ordered through SingingP, I can just ask for the one copy for me. That's why I have such a nice library of books now.
So that's all it takes, just give them a call. Tell them you heard that I, Diana, wanted to order this book but that Alissa's company advised Singing Pebble (last week actually) over the phone that they had to buy 10 at once and that you'd like to be one of the people that request it. SingingP is a super nice, small bookstore that caters to alternative lifestyles. They have a lot of yoga, vegan, meditation, oh all sorts of books, tapes and DVDs, as well as incense, etc. It's a really nice new age kind of store.

I am so sorry to hear about your father. There are no words, though, are there ...
Yes, I have been twice, but only twice. They are held on an inconvenient day (on a Friday) and time (6:30 p.m.) for working people, unfortunately. Before it was an issue of all the overtime I was working at my last contract; now, I work all the way at the MacDonald-Cartier Intl airport, so still couldn't make it on time.
But the potlucks are a great thing. Perhaps I'll manage to go at least once this season and I'll see you there.
Take care.

Ooooh, I just realized something ... <crossing fingers> ... if I request the DVD _and_ the book, will that count as 2 items out of the 10 that Alissa requires?? In other words, rather than finding 10 people to buy 10 books, if we're, say, 5 people who want the book and the DVD, will that work???
Hopefully someone here knows. I can save up for the additional cost of the DVD since I'd really like to have that, too. Here's hoping something works ... :)

... and asked them the question about # of items. Good news, we just need to get a total of 10 items, any items, not 10 of each item. I was afraid that the latter would be true (well, you never know! <g>). So I put in a request yesterday to Singing Pebble of Alissa's book _AND_ the DVD. Now if just 4 other people do the same thing, we're in business.
Hope things get easier than this. It's only because I'm determined and can't afford buying anything directly <sigh>. It shouldn't be this difficult. But despite all that, I'm really looking forward to when these can be ordered by the SP bookstore!!
Can't wait ... :)

Great news, gang; it's good to persevere!
Natasha, of Simply Raw, has intervened. I don't know exactly what has happened, but it seems that perhaps thanks to her an order has been placed. I read the post over at the forum (http://www.simplyraw.ca/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=96) yesterday so I popped on over to the bookstore last night. The books and DVDs should be in any day now! This is really great! I've wanted Alissa's book now for 2 years but just couldn't afford to buy it directly. It's still going to be more money than if we could just walk over to any local bookstore and pick it up, it seems. I've never paid for a book this way and had the price hike up so much, but I must admit that I've got to have the book and DVD! <g> (They're going to cost Cdn$40.50, approx., each. But I'm not sure if that is before or after tax. I have a funny feeling it's before GST and PST, though. <sigh>). But, still, we at least shouldn't be paying for shipping and handling fees, usu. one doesn't this way, but it's still cheaper than buying directly. Myself, I'll be picking it up once it comes in on two pay cheques, so eventually I'll have both.
Anyway, this is fantastic news and I had to share. If you're interested and live anywhere in the NCR (National Capital Region, or Ottawa to the rest of the world), I'd call Singing Pebble :) , good idea to call Singing Pebble to reserve soon. The contact info. is above.
Cheers! :D

Thanks. I thought I'd stopped the posting, but an error occurred and both responses posted. :)
