I have always had great tasting mangos in the past. But my last purchase of mangos was with a mayan valley Guatemala tag on it. When they get ripe they all taste like furniture polish
So I'm thinking this is probably the pesticide? any clues?
And yes, I would love to be able to purchase organic mangos, but their not available. Where does everybody who eat's them, buy them from?

Path I live in Chicago and the health food store I get my co-op box from has them and they are organic. I remember you saying you are an hour or so away. The store is NewLeaf,1261 W. Loyola Ave.

Also Krista orders from Timber Creek. They deliver. They come to Chicago. You may want to check to see if they deliver your way. Here is their website. http://www.tcforganics.com/tcfhome.htm
Hope this helps! :)

I look at the site you sent me, ( thankyou) I like how they have the different fruit and veggie boxes, maybe they ship?
Just out of curiosity where does your name come from?

Path, I know about that furniture polish thingy. I thought it was a sign of over ripening??? My cantaloup that is more than ripe has that same quality. I dunno.........did you eat it and get any reaction?

I tasted it but I did not swallow it - My mouth and stomach were screaming " Don't you dare swallow the horrid stuff ". So, no - no side effects - just the emotional stress of not fullfilling my mango crave :D

I agree with ML - I've had melons that had a strong "paint" taste when over ripe too. I think it is the fermentation.
I live by King Soopers which is a Kroger-owned company (In California it is called Ralphs - I don't know what it would be called in your neck of the woods)...maybe you can check around. This past week they had both organic and conventional mangoes on sale for $1 each, and the organic were about twice the size of the conventional.

I happened to notice that WildOats has a sign near it's produce that says that even organic vegatables and fruits are beening waxed. The organics of course are being covered with natural waxes. According to the sign. To me this is dishearting. I perfer nothing on my produce. That way I feel confident about where it comes from and that it is organic.
Path my given name is Ntombikhaya. I use Ntombi for short. It was given to me by the Zulu in South Africa during a naming cerimony. It means Woman of the House. My son and I lived there for several months 2 years ago.

the first mango I ever had tasted like turpentine, when I told my friends, they dind't believe me, said it was just ME, not the mango.
so I didn't have another one for abou 20 years, just about 4 years ago, and it was all brown inside, didn't eat that one either, so my first two times I tried mangos, they were bad.
Then Dragggon (who is the KING of KINGS when it comes to produce, he just walks with nature) picked one out for me, and I was really hesitant to try it, it was expensive, AND, I had two bad ones in the past, but he picked it, I tried it, it was juicy and okay, but still wasn't what I would call Good!
So, why bother? I mean, I have never once had a mango I liked, so I just don't do mangos, I mean, if someone wants to put one in a salad, I might take a bite or two, but I would probably pick it out, or not eat the salad at this point.
I'd rather have juicy ripe sweet pineapple, or kiwis with their cute little baby crispy seeds, or fresh succulent strawberries, or bursting with juice raspberries, or deep dark blackberries, or a fresh sweet orange, or tart grapefruit, all dripping down my chin and arm. THAT's for me, not some expensive mango with some alien pit inside that tastes like turpentine EEEEWWWEEEE!
But, Hey, that's just me. LOL

I've been eating some delicious mangoes lately. The green/yellow ones, from Haiti. They are bright orange inside.

Yep, two mangoes ago.
It looked fine inside and out but tasted like nasty liqour.
If I'd have been able to stand the taste I'd have probably caught a buzz and hallucinated or something. It was weird.

Have you ever tried champaign mangos? Our local store has been carrying these mangos for the past month. They are yellow and bit smaller but have a smaller seed.
The "normal" mangos have really been icky, that's why we switched to the champaign.
Mangos by us cost only .69, are they expensive elsewhere?

MANY. The last mango I had tasted like a whole bunch of nasty chemicals. I've been getting that more than ever lately, so i just stopped getting them for the time being. But, I do want to try out some organic ones from Wholefoods or Central Market over here. I wasn't even over rippened it was just right! (All except for the taste of course!)

Around here, they call the small yellow mangoes "Honey Mangoes."
They are great, too.....I'd need to buy one of each to tell the difference in taste. I buy whichever is perfectly, wonderfully ripe.

Go for the little yellow wrinkly ones. They are soooooo much better and not stringy at all. They are quite sweet. Looks can be really deceiving with fruits. The wrinkly misshapen canteloupes are the best too. Just make sure they aren't too soft.

Hey everybody thanks for your info :D
Sharon in Colorado, misslinda,
- I bought acase of 10 of these and 5 have been nasty - 1 tasted normal. I'll wait til when I can press the outside sorta easily with fingers - but not smushy. How do you tell when it's ripe?
Tombi,
I always wash off the skin and then peel it off before eating them coz you never know what happens to them before they get to you.
Your name looked interesting to me - I have friends from all over Africa and family in S.A. and Zambia
rawpriestess,
your right they do have an unique taste to them - But I also like all the others ones that you mentioned too.
swingbolder,

I've had these before, I'll have to keep me eye open for these.
prana,
Have you ever tried champaign mangos? No I have not.

Svadhyaya,

Hi!
Down here in Florida, we have mango trees all over the place. Now, this is going to sound funny, but there is one type of mango commonly referred to as a "turpentine" mango. It is more long than round, and has a very unpopular taste.
Then there are the more round ones, (lots and LOTS of varieties), often referred to as Indian mangoes (among other names), and these are really delicious treats.
So, maybe you guys are getting the turpentines...I don't know. I buy mine in 9 packs from Costco, and they have all been terrific this season. I hope my luck stays with me!
Sorry for your bad experiences, but maybe the next batch will be better.
Oh, by the way, when I get bad produce, I take it back and get my money back. Nobody ever gives me a hard time about it, either. I tell the produce department "if you can't get produce that tastes good, why bother buying it from that supplier?". They think I'm crazy, but they don't argue. And I do compliment them on the really delicious stuff, too, so I give a balanced response. Once, they told me that my feedback (and that of other customers) actually helps them with ordering. Maybe they're shining me on, but I'll never know, now, will I?
Have a lovely day!

That must be the answer - the growers have found another way to bring in more revenue by selling the nasty one to those who don't know there's a difference.

Next time you see it, check the PLU code - you might be able to figure out if they are indeed selling the infamous mango Jacki speaks of.

Hey Path,
Yeah I had some baaaad mangos about a month ago too. I was so excited because I bought them by the box, but only one was good out of like six. I'm pretty sure they were from my new fav store costco too. Almost gave up on mangoes after on bite of that. Bought some others though recently, from stores, and all were delicious once soft and ripe (accidently opened a few too early). I only buy champagne as they are my favorite and I have no luck with the others.

I am surprised no one has mentioned the issue of heating mangos yet... PATH~ maybe you are getting mangos that have been heated or "cooked" a little too much. Are you aware that some mangos are heated before they are placed on the shelf to rid the flies and "preserve the fruit"??? It's horrible, but try and buy organic when you can. Although I am not sure if buying organic makes a difference. I have been getting Haitian ones from Wild Oats lately 2 for 3$ and they have been bright bright orange on the inside. Make sure you eat them when they smell sweet and are soft to the touch :)
