Hi I am new to the world of raw and I am going to be starting the challenge tomorrow. I do not have a dehydrator yet and I will basically be sticking to organic fruits and veggies right from the store. I was wondering if anyone had any starter grocery lists for me and where can I get things on a tight budget for not so much money. I also wanted to know how important the dehydrator is. What should I look for because I found a few that are inexpensive and I am wondering how good they are. Please let me know what you think and I look forward to the experience and the challenge. I am so excited. Thanks, Cindy

Try looking for produce that is $1.00/lb or less and buy a good deal of whatever that is (will change with the seasons). After getting your cheaper bulk, fill in where needed with things that cost a bit more like avocado, coconuts, etc. I don't know what prices are like where you live, but if you look around you can get some cheap organic produce. We shop in the neighboring town because of how cheap we get things (avocados .39, organic fresh dates 3.99/lb, organic carrots 2.50/5 lbs).

The dehydrator is not needed for a raw food diet and many do not use them at all. As we are going into a large growing season (summer/fall) there should be a great variety of foods to choose from - check out local farmer's markets.

Will you be living in the dorms?

Hey just get what you like. Make sure to add some live foods (sprouts are excellent) and they have lots of protein and stuff.

I am definitely on a budget. I don't have a dehydrator. I just eat fruit for breakfast, and salad for lunch, and random experiments throughout the day. Sometimes I eat a cooked vegan dinner with my husband. I buy some organic, some regular.

Actually when you're raw-organic, you really don't need to eat very much because your food is so infused with vitality. But until the day that I can resist "wandering into the kitchen," I need to keep it cheap.
