I went vegan at christmas, and raw this week - my period started yesterday, and today it is by far heavier than it has ever been in my life. Clotting... has anyone experienced anything like this? I am very tired, and a little concerned.... some feedback would help. Thanks....

mid 30's....
I have been raw 12 days and I started my period the day before I went raw. Usually it lasts 5-6 days, heaviest on days 2 & 3. This time it only lasted 3 days and was only heavy for one! I'm very regular so I'm pretty sure the diet change had something to do with it. I know this is the opposit of your experience but I hope it helps! Rest as much as possible, the extra blood loss will definitely make you tired. Also, the switch to raw is probably affecting your hormone levels which would affect your period. Be extra gentle with yourself during this time.
Hope you feel better soon!
Love, Jax ;)

I thought my menses were fading away, but once I went raw (about 4 months now), they have come back regularly. At least the last 2 months! Go figure!

Just keep in mind a few things:
1. Menses is in part, a means of the body to clean out in "that" area. As a part of the bodies way of getting rid of toxins, your menses could very well be being utilized by your body to get rid of things...in other words, you're cleaning out.
2. A change to a raw diet will cause one's body to re-adjust in many areas, including hormonal and therefore, your body is going through some changes, but the longer you're raw, it will regulate and you will probably find your menses back to the way it was or lasting fewer days and lighter.
I have read in other raw forums of women who have experienced going from a very heavy menses that lasted 7+ days to a lighter one for several days or some heavy, but still fewer days than before.
Here is a link to a previous discussion on this topic that may be of help to you too: http://www.rawfoodtalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=357

I just experienced the easiest period of my life! Which means I've gone about one month. I was just beginning one when I went raw in December. I was really curious about how my instincts seemed to kick in about every little detail of it. I knew it was coming about an hour before it started. I knew what the flow would be like on each day. I had only one heavy day and it pretty much stopped at night. Yeah!!
I had NO bloating before. I had one headache during and that was the day I went out and had pizza with my cousin and auntie. The only times I got tired was when I forgot to supplement. The body burns more calories at this time so we need to eat more. Yet, I'm still only "asked" by my body for two meals a day. I had to remember to grab extra fruit and nuts.

Going vegan and raw definitely affects your cycle--you are removing so many hormones and chemicals from your diet and the endocrine system is sensitive, so it's probably readjusting. For myself, I have had three normal cycles after going raw--it has literally been 10 years since that has happened! Hang in there . . . for most women, their cycle becomes easier after being raw for awhile.
