View Full Version : Food Combining Rules???? What are they?
can someone please tell me the rules of food combining. I didn't believe it before, but after my lunch today of salad with lots of vegetables, and fruit, I dont think I want to have adverse reactions anymore. :(
Also I often see people classifying something as a sweet fruit, what is that? thanks for the help

Hi Boz. There are many thoughts on proper food combining, but this is the summary that I use when I need to. This is taken from Staying Healthy with Nutrition, written by Elson Haas, M.D. Hope it helps.
1) Fruits are eaten by themselves or with other fruits. Melons are best digested alone when not combined with other fruits.
2) Proteins and starches are not eaten together.
3) Combine protein and vegetables or starch and vegetables.
4) Do not eat more than one protein per meal (I believe this is referring more to combining meat and dairy).
Hope this helps.

I know many people who have gas and bloating while eating raw, and they can't figure it out, well, it is for sure eating fruit and nuts and apples and greens and all that stuff at one time, that'll do it.
thanks ....
keep the help coming :)

acid fruits can be eaten with sub acid fruits like apples cherries, peaches plums, etc. Then sub acid fruits can be eaten with bannas, grapes dates, raisins but never with acid fruits which are pinnapple, and citrus.Melon always alone.

I was led to believe that this even applies to seeds and nuts. I will mix 2 types of seed or 2 type of nuts but I will not mix a seed and a nut.

There may be few variances with where you are getting the info but the book I read states for example:
Acid fruits alone or [maybe] eaten with non-starch greens OR maybe with tomatoe or lemon
Sub acids alone
Avacado with non starch green or FUIRT ACID
Also, take the digestion [timing] into consideration......if you are already lacking the ability to digest. Example: Acid fruits and waiting 2-3 hrs minimum and THEN eat next meal. Otherwise, if you eat to soon, you may risk becoming gasy and bloated or stunt the process. But more importantly, begin with effective chewing first.
the book also talked about excess acid in the body is excreted by the body thru means of deep breathing and sweating. It suggested a 15-60 minute nap after lunch and 7-8 hrs of sleep.
Cousens, in his book Rainbow for Life says some folks have strong digestive fire which they can handle mixing foods more liberally.
I have a couple others that I am reading to get more detailed info as well but again what works for you
I've also read in another book that it is OKAY to eat avacado and apple [together] BUT eating avacado after an apple is not.
You have to experiment and see.......
Myself, I know I feel better eating one type of fruit alone. I'm fine mixing celery with papaya or mango.
