Karen do you take the 1000 mcg? or the 5000? I went to get the Jarrow brand but it was so pricey for our current budget :( I ended up getting Source Naturals brand. It's a sublingual and tastes like cherry, I gave my daughter one tablet and she loved it. BUT it cost $13 for a 30 count bottle. Still pricey to me but at least it was less than paying for a 100 tablet bottle from Jarrow and I wanted to get that one!!! boohoo :( anyways, I decided to just give my daughters an organic egg and a string organic cheese a day plus she will be getting her protein and fat there since they are currently going through the transition and not getting a lot of these in the raw diet, that will save us a lot of money compared to buying b-12 vitamins.
Anyways, my question is which one you take because I MYSELF rather go vegetarian and take b-12 separetely but I noticed that 1000 and 5000 have two different prices, 1000 of course cost less. Can me and hubby just take the 1000? do we need to take 5000? ...and why?
thanks so much!!!

And I'd like to add one more question to yours... Is there such thing as taking too much B12? For adults and for children??

robertanddenith,
Hi, I bought my Jarrow 1000 mcg bottles for 7.50 (I bought 3 bottles at the same time) each plus 6.99 shipping. That comes out to about 9.50 per bottle.
Here are sites for Jarrow on sale:

High doses are usually used for therapy to regenerate damaged brain cells and for other B-12 therapies. I take the 1000 mcg tablets every day and it varies between 2000 - 6000 mcg per day that I take. I ONLY take that much because I had some memory problems and neurological damage due to lack of B-12 and other nutrients most of my life as I dieted constantly and deprived myself when I wanted to eat. I will never do that again.
If I did not have these special problems, I would take just the B-Right B vitamin formula which has all the B-vitamins plus some nutrients that work with the B-vitamins to optimize absorbtion and utilization of these vitamins as well as a 1000 mcg tablet per day. B-Right alone makes me VERY happy and it contains only 100 mcg's of nethylcobalamin per serving. If you don't have any special problems this is probably all right however I know that dosages of about 500 mcgs are common as well. I would say that 1000 mcg's will probably guarantee that you are getting enough and will keep you ahead of the game. I personally for myself and from what I have experienced do not trust to go below 1000. When I feel all repair is done that can be done. I will drop to 1000 mcg. There is no know toxic level of B-12 methylcobalamin. After 6000 mcg per day studies have show that you don't really gain any more benefit.

Findingme,
There is no known toxicity levels of B-12 methylcobalamin in the human body. I would not over do it though. Here is kind of what I have learned about dosages.
100-500 mcg - typical dosage for maintainance an general supplimentation
1000-6000 mcg per day for therapy for neurological damage repair and other B-12 methylcobalamin therapies. (anything over 6000 mcg studies have shown add no benefit)
1000 mcg - my personal dosage chioce once my therapy is complete (I feel safe that this will be plenty)

this is very interesting thanks so much for your input. I really appreciate your detailed answer.
I was just explaining my husband (he is next to me) about this and I been telling him that we are no carnivorous. Then now he is asking me why then we need to eat meat in order to get our b-12. I wonder if there was any vegetable out there that had b-12 in our past years after all the pollution and depletion of our planet earth? He just misses the meat and wants to argue with me! lol!!!! does anybody knows the answer to this last question?
Enith
p.s. in the 4th. day of raw (second try) and yes, I been going through some major withdrawal!

B-12 is produced by bacteria, so it's doubtful that there was ever a plant that contained it. B-12 is often gotten by animals in the wild through eating insects (deliberately or not) and fecal matter on plants. Carnivores of course get most of their B-12 from meat. Many animals also get B-12 from bacteria in their digestive tract. Our bacteria *do* produce B-12, but it's too low in our digestive system to be absorbed.

I use Red Star Nutritional Yeast - Vegan Blend for my B-12 needs.
I buy it in bulk at www.bulkfoods.com where I can get the 5 pound bag for $27.05 including shipping, and at 2 tablespoons per day this will last me a LONG time.
It includes all the B vits, protein, trace minerals like zinc, and I mix it daily into my green smoothie.
To me, this is better than just a B-12 supplement, because I get the benefit of all the other ingredients, plus protein, and it's low in fat, has no cholesterol, no sodium, it's versatile, and I feel great using it!
Just a suggestion; I went with this because I'm on a budget, too.
Good luck!

I have to start off by saying I used to love nutritional yeast. I put it on my salads and loved it. BUT I don't seem to feel as well after eating while all raw. I read somewhere that it is high in purines. I do notice that I don't urinate very normal after eating it now. I don't know if there is a connection or not. It just doesn't feel the same.
So I am not sure whether or not it is okay to use for myself. I have it once in a while but am trying to kick the habit.
BUT I used to rely on it too for my B12 source.
