The only bad thing is that it is all gone. My WHOLE family liked it. That in itself is amazing as that rarely happens.

It was so good. If I weren't so computer iliterate I would post a picture of it.

It was very, very creamy and delicious.

I don't know about you all, but I sure don't feel deprived at all. :p

:p I wanted chocolate so badly today that i drove in the rain to our local health food store and brought some chocolate candy, i'm weak and have very little will power when it comes to chocolate.
If the recipe is your creation or if you feel it's okay to post it please do, i feel so bad but the candy was so good, i'm conflicted, i know i need help.
I'll have to prepare for the next time the chocolate monster comes calling.

Ann,

It was my creation. I would love to share it with you but not right now. :p

My baby just woke up and I have to get him. I will post it as soon as I can. I need to write it down before I forget anyways.

Okay, I think he is going back to sleep. ;)

Here goes....

Crust:
2 c. walnuts
1 1/2 c. dates

Pie filling:

2 avocados
1 c. carob powder
1/2 c. honey (or agave or whatever you like to use)
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
pinch of sea salt
1/4-1/2 c. of water

For the crust I ground up the walnuts in the food processor first. Then I added the dates and blended them until they were crumbs not smooth like you might do for balls. I patted that into a pie pan and fluted the edges with my fingers.

For the pie filling I blended it all in the blender. You could use the food processor too. I added enough water to get it moving in the blender. I didn't measure it so that is just approximate. I put it in the crust and put it in the refrigerator for a couple of hours. It was so good!!

Hi faith4You

Your recipe sounds delicious! It sounds like something even my non-raw, non-vegetarian husband would like. He'll eat just about anything if it has chocolate in it :)

One question: what is the consistency of the filling like, after being refrigerated? Does it hold together pretty well (is it thick), or is it rather runny, more like pudding? I'm just wondering, because I like my pie filling thick enough so that it stays looking like a piece of pie after you cut it. If it is on the thin side, I will add a thickener.

Thank you for the recipe!

Christine

Christine,

My non raw husband liked it a lot. I was surprised. It is thick after you refrigerate it. It cuts beautifully and holds its shape. Does that make sense?

Jenna, I took a picture with my camera and my camcorder. The only problem is that I don't know how to do it. Maybe I can get my sweet husband to show me how.

PATH301--I just made this pie today and I didn't taste the Avo at all. The carob and agave/honey overpowers it. The avocado just provides consistency.

Thank you

I oiled my pan a tiny bit beofe putting the crust in so I don't know if that is the key or not but it did release easily. It reminded me of a regular pie crust because I didn't make it very thick, After cooking gluten free for so many years it is nice to have something that is similar to a regular crust.

I made this pie today and it was AMAZING.
Good job on the recipe!

I put a little less sweetner in the filling and used only a tiny bit of water, so the consistency was more like chocolate frosting and the taste was almost a bitter dark chocolate (my favorite.) I plan to wow my family tonight with the pie topped with banana ice cream.

It's funny to think that there are two big green avocados inside that pie.
Just doesn't seem fitting, but works like a charm.

Just to let you all know....
I didn't quite measure the water. I was just guessing. I added it only because my blender wasn't blending up the ingredients. I added enough to get the blender moving. So, if you don't have a problem then don't add it. It should be thick like a frosting.

Enjoy!! :p

One last thing that I thought of after having this.

It would make a terrific parfait type pudding. I thought of layering it with fresh fruits. Then top it off with some raw whipped cream type thing.

YUMMY!

How is it that your chocolate pie looks so chocolatey? I've seen other ppl's looks the same, but when I use carbo, it always comes out looking like a light brown speckled color - nothing like yours! Am I doing something wrong?

Yo I got lucky here, like I said I didn't screw it up. I made some, or should I say I tried to make some salty flax seed crackers. I mixed way to much salt with the soaked flax seeds and after I took them out of the dehydrated they tasted like they came straight out of the salt sea  They were terrible.........LOL. But then a made another batch mixed with organic sugar and they came out crunchy and good :D

With the chocolate pie I used a little more spring water - the recipe calls for 1/4 cup to 1/2 . But I used 1/2 cup and some spill over and I added about another 1/4 cup of raw honey. I used organic carob powder called organic cocoa powder - I just bought it today at the HFS. The cocoa website is: www.nowfoods.com

RP, I thought that I could easily suck down 3 or 4 slices...after the second one there was no way...I'm still stuffed and it's been like 3 hours or so.....pfffttt

I was suprised too by how mine came out so rich and chocolatey with the carob but it does. This really hit my cravings in a big way. I haven't had a pie taste so much like a regular pie in a long time.

Oh, my the chocolate craving is back, must make another pie.
I also made a pudding layering it in a glass with the crust filling inbetween each layer, i made this last week right after i devoured the pie.

I made this yesterday and MY OH MY it was da bomb! I can't get over how good this is. My hubby ate two pieces. My son licked the plate clean. My daughter ate two slices. I had two slices. Hubby said that we are just going to have to keep the fridge stocked with it!

I added a couple of tablespoons of coconut oil to help it slice better. I'll probably add a little bit of coconut in the crust next time because I love coconut.

Jenjenn, the pie didn't cost me anything out of pocket because I had all of the ingredients stocked. But I am running dangerously low on nuts. It costs a fortune to restock them.

Aw, nice, I want to try that. I'm always cautious of making really nut-dense stuff because it's just me and when I've eaten it ALL I'll be like wow I just ate 2 cups of walnuts. Ha. So, you used 3 bananas and how many nuts/dates?

I ate it in the car on the way to church with my mom and she didn't even ask if it was raw, so must have really looked real! :)

I think someone else would have gotten to the food processor before me, if I wasn't the only one up when I made it! ;)

If you like this recipe, you'll probably love a VERY similar one that is in Renee Underkoffler's book. It's posted free on Woody Harrelson's website. Here's a link:

http://www.voiceyourself.com/09_dakinekitchen/09_easy.php#12

I've made it many times, and it's always been a hit. I highly recommend the original version with the more complicated crust. It's not really that much more complicated and is very tasty. Renee also has other crusts in her book, and the hazelnut one is especially delicious with the chocolate pie. Seeing the full recipe, you can also get an idea of other ingredient options, like using dates as the primary sweetener. Cause, you never know when a chocolate craving might hit, and what if you don't have any honey in the house??

I made it yesterday with 2 small avacados, 1/4 cup of agave, 1/2 teaspoon salt, dash of salt, 1/4 cup water, and the carob.

I made it with the dates and walnuts mixed at the bottom. However I prefer it just alone, like a mouse or pudding, I really didn't prefer it with the dates and walnuts, just all by it's self

SOOOO yummy!!!!!and I'm not a huge chocoholic either!!!It is way beyond what I thought it would taste like.

Originnally I put cocoa in instead and I had to throw the whole thing away because it tasted too bitter and strong.

Every raw foodist has got to at least try this!

This may sound odd, but the one pie I made (Blueberry), the crust literally stuck to the pan. Has anyone else experienced this? Does this crust release easily? Any tricks?

Thank you

I also found that the crust stuck to the glass pan. I made another one in a foil pan and it didn't cause any problem releasing from that pan.

This may sound odd, but the one pie I made (Blueberry), the crust literally stuck to the pan. Has anyone else experienced this? Does this crust release easily? Any tricks?

Thank you
To keep it from sticking, what I do is first use a little Virgin Coconut oil to coat the bottom.

I made this with 1/2 coco and 1/2 carob it worked!

faith4u: YOU'R TRAVELING ALL OVER and becoming famous! I sent this recipe to my sister in Conn. she made it Saturday. My other sister from Massachusetts went to visit her and they had 1/2 RAW dinner and then she served this pie (she made Alissa's Blueberry Pie also) she did not tell anyone about the ingredients! Surprise, my nephew who does not eat any deserts took a bite and right away said that's Joz's recipe? (meaning her 'strange' raw diet as they were/are on Atkins diet) he had two slices and my sister took the recipe to Massachusetts to make it! They loved it!

I want to make this pie and bring it with me to my mother's house. Can it be served at room temperature? Do you think it'll get too soft/mushy that way?

Well Isabelle, it depends on how far away your mother's house is. (Hee Hee! :D ) I don't think being room temperature for awhile will hurt it. The only thing I noticed is that it does dry out a bit on the top, so if you have a solution for that....
You can serve at room temperature, no problem. It is a little nicer chilled though. How about transporting it in a container with those frozen gel packs in it?
One thing is for sure, it doesn't separate or get runny. Thicker if anything.

This was my very first recipe to use carob in, and I hate to say it, but I don't really like the pie. Is carob an acquired taste? Would it taste better w/raw chocolate?

FAITH4U I also loved the chocolate pie. But most of all I'm glad you said to grind the nuts FIRST, then add the dates. I did one of Alissa's recipes for crust, and it came out like mush...But this was wonderful..So now since I'm a little date shy, I still always add less dates than call for, and that also works for me...

Any more dessert recipes out there????

I am so glad that most of you are liking this pie. ;) We have also made just the filling a put that over sliced bananas and loved it.

My kids call it the "Sickening Pie" because they eat too much of it and feel sick afterwards! ;) They are really enjoying it and request it often. I told them not to tell people what is in it until after they try it though, because we have had some people that weren't willing to give it a try after hearing about the avocados.

I liked it more the second day! I would not leave out the carob all together but add some cacao to it. Someone tried it with no carob and said it was too bitter. This is soooo good the next day, so if you though you didn't like it at first give it one more day and make sure you have plenty of crust with it... that is my favorite part. I will add a touch of salt to the crust next time.

Thanks for bumping this up. I just made the pie now and can't wait to try it out later. I used 1 cup walnuts and a little more than 3/4 cup pitted medjool dates and pinch of salt for the crust. For the filling I used 1 1/2 big Reed Avocadoes, 1 banana, 1/4 cup agave, 1 TB honey and 1 squirt of Yucan syrup, pinch of salt, more than 1/2 tsp cinnamon, some vanilla, 1/2 cup carob (from alissa's site), 1/2 cup cacao and little bit more than 1/4 cup water.

I'll post a picture of it later.

Do you think I could replace the avocados with a ripe banana? And use the Raw Chocolate Powder from Nature's First Law? It's fantastic and according to David Wolfe and Shazzie very healthy. Sometimes, I go through periods where I can't even look at an avocado. I think I'm nearing that "Avocado'd Out" phase.

I LOVE this recipe as is, but I have replaced one of the avocados with a banana so maybe it would work okay. Maybe someone else has tried it with just bananas and will let us know!

I've got to get the ingredients to make this again, thanks for bumping it up to remind me!

Thanks for the reminder on this easy pie to make.

My kids ask me if I will make the Make Yourself Sick Pie every now and then. They call it that because they eat so much of it that it makes them sick. ;)

I would bet that adding a banana would be good. I have also put slices of banana along the crust before putting the filling on top of it.

I have also decorated the top with whatever berries I have around. I love it.

It is a great way to use up the avocados when you find that you have too many (are there ever too many?).

YUM - I rushed home from work today to make this for lunch. It tastes fantastic.

BUT...I'd like to make this for some non-raw friends this weekend to really blow them away. So there's one or two little issues I hope the experts can help me with.

The pie filling is a bit grainy. And I have a high-powered blender. Did I just not blend it enough? The carob powder is what is causing that "grainy" taste. Or do I try adding more water (I used very, very little)?

It's green. :) Not drastically so, but there's definitely a green tint to mine that I didn't see in any of the pictures posted here. How do you get rid of that color so it looks lovely and brown?

Thanks!
Eve

Eve,
I have used the food processor and the blender for the pie. I also used cocoa (or cacao..however you spell it) instead of carob. Not sure if the carob will give it the darkness. Maybe try adding some more? My avos were HUGE so I had to add more of the other ingredients to balance it. Were yours pretty big too?

I guess the graininess could be from the carob. Mine looks grainy in the picture but it's really air bubbles. :)

Ya know, I remember making this with the cacao nibs and mine was grainy and somewhat green tinted. It worked best with the powder.

I've not made the exact recipe posted in this thread, but I've made similar variations. My advice, if you are trying to impress cooked food eaters with this, use cacao and not carob. Yeah, carob can be pretty grainy in texture - I like it in SOME things, but not all and I don't think I'd like it in a pie such as this that should be silky smooth. So, if you can, use cacao powder as it's finer and it's more like the chocolate they're familiar with! And, it probably will give you a richer, deeper color and you can always add a little more if need be to make it richer both in color as well as in flavor.

i just made some and its chilling in the fridge. i made up some coconut oil chocolate and thats solidifying in the fridge too. i thought it would be a good idea to make chocolate fudge cups (kinda like a peanut butter cup but w/ the avocado mousse for a rich, almost truffle like filling). I put some liquid coconut oil chocolate in a cupcake baking paper and im letting that firm up. then im going to put a good amount of chocolate mousse on top and then cover that w/ more coconut oil chocolate and let the whole thing firm over. it should be great when its done, ill take a picture!

YAY! My carob powder arrived yesterday! So of course I had to make this and it's chilling in the fridge now. :D

I used Alissa's carob powder and the filling isn't grainy at all. I had a LOT of filling so I ate some of it straight from the bowl and it was the PERFECT texture and consistency! The only thing I would do differently next time is use a little less honey, because it tastes too much like honey and not enough like CHOCOLATE. :)

For the crust, I used Rawkinlocs' idea: nuts (I used walnuts and pecans), coconut oil, water, and agave. It smelled delicious, I just hope it doesn't stick to the pan. We'll see in a few minutes...

I think I am going to put some blueberries and raspberries on top and I will definitely take a picture and post it here later!

Here it is! ;)

It was so good!!

whoa......it was sooo good. a little sweet for me because i am not accustomed to it....mostly the honey felt like to much.

I was making it for cooked eaters and telling myself I wasn't going to have any....proved wrong for tasting/dinner/and breakfast!!!

If the honey taste is too strong you can use agave too. I do that more often than not because my kids don't like honey as much as dates or agave.

tanishamarshall

Good idea. I just wonder if they'll be less pudding. Do you think I could add more avocado to give more pudding? I guess I just need to experiment. My husband doesn't like bananas so that woudln't work.

ChaiLife
08-10-2007, 08:52 AM
Maybe it depends on the size of the avocados. Mine were HUGE! LOL I just adjust the ingredients until it suits my taste. I add more sweetener than the recipe calls for and a little less chocolate. Justtweek it to make it your own. :) I also add a little bit of coconut oil to make it set nice and pretty. but that's for the pie. Probably don't need to do that if you are just making the pudding.

MaRaw has another excellent chocolate mousse recipe (though very similar) at her web site you may want to check out: www.therawtable.com (http://therawtable.com/recipecoll/chocpudd.htm)

Hi:

I just made your pie and this is my very first desert that I have tried. I just loved the crust of walnuts and dates. Couldn't get mine to flute at the edges but it still looked good. I made the filling and I used agave for the sweetener instead of the honey. I am not sure I was happy with the taste of the filling. It chocolate didn't seem sweet enough. I added more agave but it still didn't seem as sweet as I thought it should be. Maybe after it chills in the fridge it will be better.

Can you tell me if there is a difference between using raw honey or agave? Is one better then the other? Would it make a big difference in the taste.

I am looking forward to having a piece of this pie after dinner.

thank you

Jo

I made a version of this yesterday to take to dinner with some SAD friends. They *loved* it and gobbled up every last bite. I was so disappointed because I'd been hoping to take some home with me for later! :D

Anyway, here are the alterations I made. Sorry, I don't usually measure stuff, just taste and adjust as I go.

Crust:
Dates
Pecans
Agave
Coconut butter

Ground up in food processor, pressed by hand into pie pan.

Solid chocolate layer (goes on top of crust and under pudding)
Raw cacao powder (got mine from Alissa, wow! is it good)
Coconut butter
Agave

You only need just a little of this, mix in food processor, then press onto crust. This will harden into a very solid chocolate layer when cooled in the fridge.

Chocolate pudding
Two avocados
Raw cacao powder
Coconut butter
Agave
Sea salt
Cinnamon
Dash of vanilla

Mix in food processor, spread on top of solid chocolate layer. Cool pie in fridge until it hardens up a bit.

The addition of the solid chocolate layer in the center of the pie added a WOW factor! I will absolutely be making this again (and again, and again)... :p
