Someone on this board talked about having a smoothie made from young coconut milk and meat.
I just had my first one and I'm amazed at how incredible it tastes!
BEST smoothies I've EVER had in my life.
Really!
thanks to whomever it was that posted it the first time!
I'm hooked!

You're making my mouth water and my tummy rumble. :D I have got to try one of these soon! What else did you add besides the coconut? It's 38 degrees outside but I'm picturing myself sitting on beach on a tropical isle drinking a coconut smoothie and reading a book on network administration or some other geek-text that I love to read but never understand. :D

Hi Autumn
All I did - was break the coconut open - poured the milk into a boawl - then broke the cocnut wide open and scraped the meat into the blender and then added the cocount milk - THAT'S IT nothing else. just 100% pure coconut.
It was a "young" thai coconut. I'm not sure if they taste different then others - but I have a feeling they do! This was out of this world!
Wish I could send you some!

I'm with you Catherine. Yesterday I broke open a coconut drank the milk and ate the coconut straight, couldnt even make it to a blender...was so good and it was so hot in the room I ripped my shirt off  ( well ok, not ripped) and ate it half naked sitting on the living room floor. yummmy and my doggy loved it too! It took me far, far away from a rainy Seattle (area) day!

How hard is it to break open a coconut? I've been dying to try one, but am worried that I won't be able to get it open.
My local food co-op also has these big white "things" (for lack of a better term), that look to me like a really big coconuts with the outsides cut off. Does anyone know if that's what these are, and if they're as good as if you crack open your own?

I'm not sure of the easiest way to open one green girl. I take a screwdriver and a hammer and hammer 3 holes or so in it and drain the milk then take it outside and WHACK it open with a hammer. lol it's quite fun. ;)
Blessings~
hmmm a drill would be great to to drill holes and drain out the milk before ya SMASH it....!

That's the one I got - the one that looks like it had it's outsides taken off. It's white and has a little tip on the top of it.
I actually threw it onto my sidewalk several times until the juice started pouring out - I had a bowl with me so I grabbed it and got the juice into the bowl in time. Then after I drained it out - I kept throwing it on the ground until I could pull it apart - it took a while - I'm not that strong.
I heard that people have used a drill to make a hole in it to let the juice out
or a screw driver and a hammer to break it open. I'm going to try that route next time. I have another in the fridge - just waiting to become a smoothie!
YUM! :D

Wow this sounds like a full body experience! Feats of strength and ripping off one's shirt! :D I guess if I have to throw it on the sidewalk to open it, I better keep my shirt on. :p I think I must get a couple ASAP. I want to join in all the fun!
I need to try this now, it sounds so delicious! I've got the same type of coconut choice, I can opt for one with it's outside off, with that same shape your describing, I'm sure there's milk inside. Maybe that will be easier to eat.

You guys are hilarious! I never thought of using the drill- I will definitly do that next- I just never think of power tools and food at the same time :D
The young thai coconut is the white with a pointy top- I get mine at Stater Brothers for $1.49 each. No other grocery store here has them :(
Sweetgoddess- it sounds like you really get into your coconuts... sounds more like a ritual! :D They are so good- they would rate the ritual treatment in my book too :D
Catherine- I will try the smoothie! I have one in the fridge right now too! :D

I've heard that some people use a 5lb dumb bell to crack open the coconut (after draining the liquid).

Just got home from a long day discovering more goodies in LA. Went to a health food store that really caters to raw foodies! YEAH! tomorrow I'm taking my boyfriends car there so I can stock up on the goods they have!
After 8 buses I had my eye on the prize and came right home - grabbed the coconut from teh fridge - a screw driver and a hammer - and knocked a little whole in it and poured the milk into a bowl I had right next to it.
Then I used the screwdriver and hammer to make more holes in a line - then used the back of the hammer to try to pry the darn thing open. After more pulling and prodding I finally got the thing open and scraped the meat into the blender and added the milk and blended it up!
Sitting here with a very tall glass of LOVE!
AHHHHHHHH.
can't wait to hear if you all tried it yet and if you enjoy it as much as I do!
xoxoxo

Of course I simply had to race down the shop and get myself a coconut.
I chose the one in a funny shape, when I'd drained the milk out I took it outside and threw it against the cement. That worked!
I scraped the meat out into the blender with the milk, whipped it up and...
I feel bad to say, I didn't think much of it. I'm determined to give the other coconut a try now. I've never tried one of these coconuts before.

coconuts are just scrumptious, aren't they? (now thats a word for you!)
I lived for a time in a place where the mature ones cost around a dime, and the green ones not much more...I ate them everyday. The green ones always had a story with them...you could tell how close the tree grew to the ocean, because the ones that did had salty tasting coconut water. It was an adventure to eat! That experience is hard to come by here stateside.
Last year my hubby and I were out traveling to a friends, and I decided I wanted a coconut. We stopped at a grocery store, and out in the parking lot, I unpacked the coconut (it was the brown mature type) popped it into a plastic bag, and started smashing it on the cement. The juice ran out (that was ok, I wanted the meat) but the only thing I had to pry it out with was a plastic knife. :D  You should have seen me...I was practically knawing on the thing. I guess that is why we should all hope to be shipwrecked with a machete. Imagine trying to open a young thai coconut without one?
The drill idea sounds nice too, I always use a hammer and a machete myself.

Okay, I just made this, and I loved it- but my smoothie maker didn't grind up the meat like I would have liked... next time I will use my processor. It was still really good :)

Glad you enjoyed it - I'm still sipping on the one I made when I got home - I have some hard particles in it from the outside shell and that's no fun at all.
Hopefully I'll be more careful next time.

I don't know if you guys are kidding or not about how you open coconuts, but in case you're not, opening them is not that hard. Get a large sharp knife, lay the coconut on it's side, and hit it with the knife blade a couple of inches down from the point of the coconut. Turn it a quarter turn, and hit it again on that side. Repeat until you've done all the sides. You might have to hit each side a couple of times.

Ha! I wasn't kidding at all Allison ..lol. I will try that today. Now I'm wondering, how do you all scrape the meat out? With your shirt on or off? I scraped mine out with my teeth because I wasn't patient enough to do it with a knife--it seemed to take forever to me and bits of the outside got all over the coconut meat.
Oh what a lovely bunch of coconuts
There they are all standing in a row......................

hey guys, i normally get a large knife and shave the white (cone part) off at the point and it will show three lines or joints. Stick your heavy knife in a crack and then get a mallet or meat tenderizer hammer with the smooth side and hit the back of the knife and it cracks the coconut open. then twist the knife sideways and it will take a chunk of husk off to reveal the liquid. Pour out the liquid and then turn the coconut on its side and cut a hole in the top with the knife. you then should be able to use a spoon and just scrape out the contents. I make smoothies about everyother day and i have found this works the best.

Carmel,
With the shirt off an all--what coconuts are you talking about? :D
So is the general consensus that the young coconuts are better or is there really not much difference?

I'm having way too much fun reading all about your coconut adventures. . .Last week I bought one on my lunch hour and brough it back to work. Spent about 20 minutes trying to "quietly" open it with a fork and a can opener (all I had) and it worked.:D Just drank the juice and ate a little of the meat because I didn't have a blender.
This week I had picked one up at the Asian market and when I open it last night it wasn't good :( However, this time I used a knife and a hammer and it opened very easily - but I was really disappointed that I couldn't make the smoothy. I'll go back to the health food store for my next coconut and give it a try.
Catherine - which store in LA? I live in Orange Co. and I'm thinking a drive up to try Juliano's is in order and I'd like to find that store, too, if you could direct me.
thanks

I bought my coconuts at Whole Foods. I bet there's one in your area - or close.
If you want to meet - maybe we can go to Juliano's together!
Let me know.
I know my boyfriend would want to join in too!

Okay, I just had my first coconut smoothie! I can't believe how hard it was to get open! It took both me and my roommate working at it for about 20 minutes to crack the thing open! We used a screw gun, a chef's knife, hammer and screw driver!! Sure was good, though! ;)

How can you tell when a coconut's too old....I bought my young thai coconut about a week and a half ago and it's been in the fridge ever since. I wouldn't know the difference between sour coconut milk or non sour. How can you tell?
Old young cononuts. Kinda an oxymoron eh?

Hi, I haven't posted for a while, due to some computer difficulties followed by physical problems occasioned by a fall (my right arm is suffering with tendonitis, making it difficult to type or right) but I've been keeping up with everyone by reading the posts. When I saw this topic and the posts attached, I thought I'd send a link to a page that illustrates opening a young coconut. Hope it's helpful.

Peace,

I tried a different cocount, and now I can join in, it was so delicious.
I just loved it! I'm not sure what the difference is with the cocounuts, but I'll never buy those funny shaped, already shelled one's again.
It could be that I had a bad one?

Alrighty,
After I took off my hazmat clothing and goggles and put away the electric grinder, I sat down to eat the coconut.
Um, I really didn't like it. Maybe I got a bad one too. I have always liked the taste of coconut very much, but this tasted bland and overwhelming all at one time. Strange, huh?
I'll try it again in a couple weeks and see if I have a change of opinion.
