i have just started using extra virgin, raw coconut oil-3 tablespoons a day-for weight loss along with a raw diet. I have been on it 2 weeks and have lost 8 lbs. It really helps with a thyroid condition and gives you energy. You can look at coconutdiet.com for more info. I highly recommend it. It is a saturated fat but the studies that say it is harmful were done on altered "cooked" coconut oil. It is wonderful for weight loss-you feel your metabolism speeding up!!

Steflou,
Hi. I too eat coconut oil everyday for breakfast. It is great. I notice is speeding me up and giving me energy. My raw vegan doctor does not recommend any oils except for coconut oil, avocado and some olive oil (olive oil has some trans fats in it). I did much research on it and coconut oil contains medium chain tryglicierides which are good for you. It is saturated but has no cholesterol. It is the good kind of saturated fat.

Quick question - my coconut oil is from an indian store and doesn't say anything other than "coconut oil", how do I tell whether or not it is raw? How do you tell with brands from the USA?

I have some virgin coconut oil that has been in my frig. for about 2 years. I have used more then 1/2 jar. Do you think it might go bad? Any ideas about experation dates would be very helpful.

I notice that when I eat coconut oil it makes me tired. Boo hoo.
Why doesn't it work for me? I have hypothyroidism.

Coconut oil is VERY stable and I've seen studies leaving it at room temperature for 2 years in the tropics with ZERO rancidity... I'm sure having it in the fridge is that long is fine! Just give it a taste, and if it's still pleasing you're good!
Most coconut oil in health food stores is RBD.
Refined
Bleached
Deorderized
The coconuts for this type of oil are often gathers only a couple of times a year. It's is left open to dry and photos of the coconuts often show them BLACK. The oils go rancid. They then refine the oil out, and have to run it through a long process to remove the terrible flavours going rancid gives the oil. That's why refined coconut oils have no flavour. I don't recommend them at all.
You need to look for catch phrases like cold pressed, unrefined, smells like coconut (you don't usually see this but sometimes you do). Alissa sells very high quality coconut oil.
There are also some companies making coconut oil by the old tradition of letting the coconut cream ferment overnight. This oil is 100% never heated, but the fermentation does seem to make it lose that coconut flavour.
Hope this helps!
Cheers,
Sheryl

Karenisraw,
When you eat the coconut oil for breakfast do you eat it straight or mix it with something?
Does it actually taste like coconut? I have been taking flaxseed oil for to help my dry skin. It works as long as I take 2-3 TB a day, but the stuff tastes horrid! Will this work instead? Does it have any omega 3 and omega 6 in it?

It tastes like coconut and smells good. It is white, and it is very tastey. Nothing like flax oil. It hardens like butter in the frig. It spreads a little like butter too. I think it is delicious :)

Veganman,
I found my RVD because I saw a coupon for his raw vegan restaraunt that he owns. I went to eat there and liked it so much that I looked at their website. There was a link to their community events. I called to ask what the community events were and Joe the admin assist. said they were mostly lectures every Tuesday nights. I went and met Dr. T who owns the restaraunt and clinic. He seems to have really helped me already with the lectures and also some recomendations.
I don't think coconut oil has Omega 3's or Omega 6's.
I would look for virgin unrefined (raw) organic coconut oil. I believe coconut oil is the same as coconut butter according to most people. I did however see a website that sold coconut butter which apparently was coconut oil and coconut milk together or something like that.
Honeybeejoy. I don't know why you are not losing weight with it. It could be something else altogether. For myself, it speeds me up but at times I gain either plateu or gain from some other apparent reason. My RVD and I are in the process of trying to find out what my problem is. Hoenybee, my RVD said it is good to take a probiotic because when you lose some weight the toxins from the fat that are circulating in your body keep you from losing more weight. That is why some people plateau. You need to get rid of the toxins to begin losing weight again. I eat Cilantro, excercise and take an infrared sauna when I feel the need to detox. He said probiotics help with the process of detox. I also started taking some suppliments which seem to help with weight loss. My RVD seemed to think this made sense when I told him about that. I started to take Ceralin (formulated suppliment for brain performance and protection), which has been repairing my body. I can feel it doing things to different parts of my body and it was working on my thyroid yesterday and today, especially my left one. I am hoping this will help with my metabolism.

Hi,
I just ordered Alissa's coconut butter, and I LOVE it. I've already used half the jar making chocolate from a thread, and I've been eating it for my between breakfast and lunch snack. I also tried it straight and it was great, but I'm such a chocaholic :)

BOZ,
It is supposed to speed up your metabolism and most people begin to lose weight with it. If you don't begin to lose or gain, then most likely there is some underlying reason. It gives you instant energy because it is absorbed immediately upon ingestion and utilized immediately for energy. For myself, it worked and then I plateaued but my doctor said that the reason I plateaud is because I lost the 10 lb's so quickly and the circulating toxins from my lost weight was inhibiting my weight loss. He said I need to get rid of the toxins before I start to lose again. He said to be patient and keep doing what I am doing.

Coconut oil is not only beneficial internally it is also benefical externally. It can be used for the skin with wonderful results. When you put it on the skin it will leave your skin extremely smooth and soft. You'll also smell good! I can only imagine that if you are injesting it and using it on the skin the benefits would double if not triple. It can also be used on your scalp.

Boz, I ate coconut oil for the first year I was raw. It didn't seem to effect my weight when I ate less than 1 tablespoon, but any more than that and I gained weight. I think everyone reacts differently to it. My metabolism was already in good shape, so maybe that's why coconut oil didn't speed mine up.

Try this:
Just like butter frosting!
I keep mine in the frig because it gets really hot here, so I was looking in my Raw Cookbook and found this recipe which I changed a little, and it tasted just like butter frosting and it looked like it because of the white from the coconut oil.
Virgin Coconut butter/oil (hard from the refrigerator, a little hot water, honey or agave, butter extract, and a dash or two of salt. OMG!! It is just like that butter frosting we used to have, but so much better and healthy :) I was desperate to find something to put it on. Flax crackers were good. A good pick me up this morning.
