Are there any raw runners out there? How did you incorporate mileage into your transition raw? I am finding I have little energy for long runs. Please help!

I AM!!! My advice to you would be to make suuuure you eat enough fruit... these are your carbs...they will give you energy. Have you checked out Dr. Graham's website??? He trains athletes... might wanna check it out...
Other than that I am glad to know there is another runner on board!! I know Misslinda is as well... or at least she really likes her Nike's! :p

I am, I run 5 to 6 miles a day five days a week, I walk at least another 5 to 6 miles a day with my business. Will be running in the chicago marathon in october. Have a lot of superfoods and green smoothies every day, eat avocados, and lots of bananas. I also eat alot of fruits . I have all kinds of energy, just start slow and find out what works for you try different things to see how you feel eating them, and which ones give you the most energy. Forever Young

Sounds like Forever Young, you are doing it right! I don't run nearly as much as you, plus I need to eat more fats and heavier foods..I know it.
My running energy is pretty low unless I've had denser meals the day before...Do you eat before you run? I run first thing in the morning and I'm never hungry then!

I am a runner, I do about three miles at a time since I have been pregnant. I like to have a banana/celery smoothie before I go out, especially on a longer run (used to do 5+ miles before pregnant).
I just toss two bananas, two stalks of celery and two cups of water in the blender and blend until smooth. It really helps. Then I do a green smoothie when I get back. I hear that coconut water is amazing and filled with electrolytes to help you get going again after the run.
Cheers!

I was 100% raw, then went back to 85% raw, then went back to 80-10-10 raw vegan, all while running. I definitely noticed a lack of energy for about a week when I went back to all raw. In fact, I have been training for the marathon in Nashville that is next week and run 30-40 miles a week, so the sudden lack of energy was scarey. But all of my energy and more came back after around a week. I found what helped the most was to eat lots of fruit that week when my energy was low. I still eat a lot of fruit, but I rely the most on green smoothies for extra energy for running. I usually use about a cup of water, 7 c. greens (my favorite is parsley), and 4 frozen bananas. I think you will find it helps a lot.
Hope this helps.

You website is beautiful! I am a studio arts major right now in ceramics and my very first REAL exhibition opens this Friday... I am sooo excited... but your pieces are beautiful...

Good to know you are in Nashville! You should come to some of the potlucks! Hope to meet you sometime!

Just got back from a Paul Nison seminar, and he says the MOST important thing is SLEEP because that's when our bodies repair themselves. So, make sure you're getting extra sleep while your body detoxes as well as rebuilds from running.
Also, I second green smoothies, love them before long runs! Short runs I either don't eat anything, or just a piece of fruit.
Just hang in there, more energy is coming! Running 100% raw is AWESOME :D

It just so happens I helped start the Nashville raw food group. We went to the March meeting with Shannon Rose. Were you there?

Thanks Vandy for your comments about my work!
Wow, that's amazing 30-40 miles a week...do you find that nothing bothers you knee/muscle/tendon wise?
I would just think that running that much would inevitably cause the body to wear down. I hear nightmare stories about older folk who were long distance runners needing knee replacements...even with proper equipment, stretching etc.
Allison
04-20-2006, 05:25 PM
My knees do bother me sometimes, and my right knee is injured right now, but I run for my emotional health, and Lord willing, I will continue to run until I just can't anymore. Increasing mileage too quickly will often lead to injury, so just watch that.

I really want to be a runner....health problems prevented me from joining the track team this year but next year I hope to join cross country and track. My mom was of the top ten in the state when she was in high school, and our builds and looks are extremely alike so I hope that someday I can be that good as well. Of course, my mom was like 5'6 (now 5'9.5) and 100 pounds....yet she still badgers me so much about my need to gain weight...I gained two pounds one week and then maintained that weight by the end of the next week and she just sounded all disappointed, "Bristol you're supposed to be gaining weight and you're not! You aren't eating enough foods that will make you gain weight"...etc. ah well.

I am a raw runner! I run 4 to 5 miles a day, approximately 6 days a week. I'm also running in the Chicago Marathon. YAY! I can't wait.
When I first transitioned to 100% raw, I had trouble keeping up with my normal runs, because I wasn't eating enough overall, and not getting enough fruits or fats. My body really started to crave more fats, so I am now eating more fruits, nuts and avocados. I still eat a lot of green vegetables as well. I also started using the Hemp Protein Powder in my smoothies from Alissa's site, which really gives me a lot of energy! If I don't eat enough of a variety on the days that I really push myself at the gym, I have less energy and I am not able to run as much the following day. Keeping up a consistent workout routine is very important to me, so I try to make sure I'm eating what my body needs. I think I'm doing a much better job listening to my body :) . I hope this helps!

I agree with the others....plenty of fruit!!!! It was hard to get used to at first because it seemed like too much, but just listen to your body and you'll be ok...I am running a half marathon in Ottawa, ON (Canada) next Sunday and am planning to have my typical juice smoothie prior + a fruit or two....along with some grapes or orange wedges to have with me in case I need a boost during the race.....this will be my first race at 100% raw! I feel ready! :D :D :D
I am also a raw runner. Well, I am in my second consecutive raw challenge. Towards the end of the first month, I ran a half marathon.
And I set a personal record!
My energy did seem low at first, and actually continues to this day. I just ignore it when I have to run.
I am opposite though, in terms of what I need for fuel before a long run. I will eat raw oat groats or some raw nut butter on some of Lydia's Sprouted Sunflower Bread. I need a bit more substance to handle a run.
Post-run, if I am at the park and not close to home, I eat a Lara Bar. If I am close to home, I make a green smoothie of some sort and put hemp protein powder in it.

I usually run on an empty stomach, refuel after. I run better this why. Food in my tummy makes me ill and reduces my performance. Odd ball, thats me !
If I have been up for awhile before a run it is 1/2 a fruit at best.

As you can see, runners vary. I think you need to find what is right for you.....Your body will let you know. It may take awhile through trial and error but I'm sure you'll find what's best! Now, how about post recovery....I just woke up. Sunday is my only "sleep in" day. I usually get up at 3:30 a.m. ( crazy I know) But Sunday is like recovery after a long week and Saturday's long run....My point is, I just ate 4 bananas because my body just WANTED them. Again, I attribute that to my body NEEDING possibly potassium from doing so much running and sweating yesterday? Does anyone else have post run/ recovery cravings?????? just wondering

Hi,
I started running about month ago. I don't need any food while running up to 20 km (12,5 miles). But I'd like to develop a "raw energy gel" that I'll consume on longer distances. I'm considering mixing raw coconut oil and honey and maybe something else. What do you thing?
Thanks

05-22-2006, 03:21 AM
I've tried various things......grapes in a baggie, orange wedges, etc...ok but kind of a pain to open bag, chew well and not gag + breathe!!!! I have also added honey or maple syrup ( I know, not raw) to water for glucose + I've done a spoon of coconut oil just before heading out for a run! Right now I do a pre run water + a pre-run juice (combo of f & v) + pre-run fruit like an apple.....I get up at 3:30 but don't run until 4:45ish....so I HYDRATE early, use the bathroom a few times :D and then run! During a run of less than 10 miles I have nothing.....I am running a half marathon next week end and am planning on having a water bottle with a juice/water mix in it + some fruit just in case all they offer is energy gels/other non-veg. stuff.....If I could figure out a way to carry honey I would......any ideas? Maybe I'll just add some to my juice concoction....By the way celery is a good thing to have in your juice as it is full of similar electrolytes as "gatorade" type drinks...Good luck! :)

I am a cyclist who just started raw (up to 150 miles during one weekend is my usual goal for the summer), and this thread is so helpful to me! I was concerned that I would not have the energy to continue cycling on raw. Thanks for the thread!
And yes! There is is a way to carry honey. The brand "Real Raw Honey", which is pure, nonfiltered, never heated, nonpasaturized, realy raw honey (go figure) comes in "energy packs", which are ~1.5" diameter snack packs. You could put several in your pockets (or where ever runners put thing  )
This honey is THE most unbelievable thing I have ever tasted. I have always hated honey...but it turns out that it is man-tampered honey that I hate. Who knew God knew what He was doing when He created food for us? No wonder "the land of milk and honey" is such a blessing. :D
Good luck everyone!

Diantha: Thanks a lot. The celery is definitely a good idea. I'll try mixing it with orange juice to get a drink or with honey (yak? :-) ) to get a "gel" that could be filled into small closeable bags.
I think that for marathon etc. you can always have somebody to wait for you with the bottle ready so only trainings can be a problem.

Great idea for the drink...I think I'll be all set since I hydrate so well prior and then after as well....think my body has adapted......I drink juice every a.m. before my run....a good combo is the celery with apple/pear/cucumber....heck, whatever you got....I am frugal so when I cut up watermelon or cantaloupe I juice the rind! Great chlorophyll content and gives a good flavor.....waste not want not....I am going to order the honey packs but not for this race....this is my "test race". First one back after my injury in January!!! <<cross fingers>>.....oh yeah, dates are a good snack too but make sure you have something to wash them down....sticky!!!

I too am a runner...an hour before you run, you need to eat carbs!!! What
about a banana with almond butter...or, if you really need fuel, do Juilianno's recipe for Wild rice...i just bought the really dark wild rice, haven't made/soaked it yet, but i bet it would be a great lunch..with pinenuts and olive oil and mushrooms...you really need fuel fuel fuel which
are carbs carbs carbs...nuts won't do it...salads won't either.
hope that helps

Ricka-Do you have the recipe for the wild rice available? Sounds yummy. I do carbo load prior to my workouts.....I sure eat a lot of fruit. We have been chatting about snacks you can have with you DURING a run and drink concoctions that hit the spot.....I'll pass on the gatorade (yuck, never did like it) this week end in lieu of my celery&fruit juice!!! Also, as an "experiment" I am soaking some coconut meat, dates, flaxmeal as we speak...Tonight when I get home I plan on homoginizing them and then dehydrating them into "cookies" because I thought they may be good during a run??? I am not one to follow recipes because I never have everything and can't do a lot of nuts but I love to experiment on my own........I'll let you know how they turn out.....stay tuned :D

I am so glad you found the honey! The packs are so convenient. I only bought one, because I didn't know if I would like it. Needless to say I just bought a 2lb bottle yesterday, which will last forever.

I would love to learn more about cycling...Have you done any races? I really want to do a triathlon but am leary after my "accident" in January (I broke the neck of my femur and now have a metal plate, etc...) My 1/2 marathon this week end is my "test" or my way of proving that I can still run! But I was actually training for a triathlon at the time of my accident as well....I am back into swimming a few times a week but not so much the cycling yet....Let's start a new cycling thread rather than e-mail because there are most likely "others" out there too and we can all learn from each other! Now that the weather is nicer here (NY) I should be able to ride more....I NEED A REAL BIKE!!! Any tips/suggestions? I'll start a new thread called "cycling" right now....Thanks redfizz

intermixing the flavors? that's a good thing? right? I add and deduct things from my "juice" all the time....I usually run ginger and a lime/lemon through my juicer too just to "kick it up a notch"....oh yeah and adding a touch of cayenne really gives it a zing....Have I mentioned I am not much of a recipe follower? must get that from my Grandmother. She ran a restaurant and a bakery at one time....She would think I'm crazy for being a raw veg.!!! :D  I am in search of a good protein (amino acids, whatever) source right now. I tracked my food yesterday on fitday.com and was only 8% protein for the day, 38% fat, and 52% carb!!!! I was shocked because I did not think I ate that much fat!!!! I have heard hemp powder is a great source....any other suggestions?
Advid
05-24-2006, 04:17 AM
I think it's ok. I used fitday.com and only a week or so and my percentage is very similar to yours. I think that 8% of protein is enough. At least according how I feel.
NFrawRUNNER
05-24-2006, 07:24 AM
Advid...I think you're right.....I was just wondering how others have compared. And as someone else mentioned it's more about the amino acids than the protein...and there are plenty of raw foods that are "complete" proteins including apples which I love......Guess it's true...An apple a day keeps the doctor away! Thanks for the feedback! I was more surprised by the fat!!! But I guess I shouldn't worry too much! My weight is where it should be and a lot more stable than when I was "dieting" and I SURE EAT A LOT MORE!!!! :D Have a great day!

Anyone running mileage closer to 50-60 miles per week while eating raw? I have been eating about 80% raw for the past year while maintaining this kind of mileage. I recently transitioned to a 100% raw diet and I am not able to keep this mileage up. I am incredibly tired and can't seem to get enough fuel. I try eating more nuts and seeds but they make my stomach feel "stuffed", without eating a lot of volume. Too much fruit makes it difficult to manage my sugar levels and often times I go hypoglycemic while on a run...not fun. So that leaves vegetables, which I love, but I would have to eat tons of veggies to get enough calories. My weight is dropping, even though I have cut back on the mileage due to my lack of energy. I feel very frustrated. Maybe I am detoxing, I don't know, but I feel miserable.
Is there any hope for me?
Thanks!

05-27-2006, 06:22 PM
Sevenbravo- The same thing happened to me when I first switched over to raw + still does any time I increase my mileage. Although you've been raw for about the same as me??? I am learning I must need a little more fat and less carbs than I thought....The fat stays with you longer if you're an endurance athlete...
Do you have a dehydrator? I have concocted my own "energy bars" which help (I don't follow any particular recipe...I vary them depending on what I have on hand) Also, our grocery store has "Organic Food Bars" and one kind is 100% raw(the Omega Flax are cold pressed). I just use them once in awhile when I don't have any "made" because they are about $2.50 a piece!!!....But it may be a good thing to carry on a longer run. I was running 70 miles a week before my accident. Now I am logging about 40-50 miles per week (running) + cycling 2xweek and swimming 4x week. Tomorrow I am running a half marathon and plan on having my morning water, tea, juice +a juice smoothie (2 celery, 2 frozen bananas, H2O, a scoop of flax/hemp protein powder) + some kind of fruit(s) for the trip depending on how I feel + I'll carry a food bar during the race "just in case"....I know that sounds like a lot of fluid but I am up REALLY early and the race is not until 10:30!!! Come to think of it, are you staying hydrated enough? I know for awhile I slowed my water intake because everything I read about being raw indicated we don't need as much water. However, if you sweat out a lot you still need to replace it!!! We may all be raw here but any athlete needs more water, etc... than others...And dehydration will make you sluggish also...
Glad you posted. There are a few of here posting that are experimenting so keep us posted on anything you come up with!!! Good luck!
sevenbravo

I could probably be drinking more water. If your urine is clear, does that mean you are hydrated? (Usually mine is) I do have a dehydrator, and my wife had made a lot of yummy, high energy treats for me. I just don't feel well when I eat a lot of nuts and seeds. I remember running a half marathon last August. The night before I had two celery sticks with raw almond butter and that made me feel completely full. In fact I felt too full. I had a hard time getting to sleep and felt full the next morning. I can eat a Lara Bar without problem though. I realize that this diet is about learning what works for you. I had some adjusting to do, living without whole grains like I used to. I can handle avacados, so I may try eating more of those. It is just nice to see others exercising as much as me and still staying on the raw diet.
Thanks!

My favorite "cookies" I make in the dehydrator don't nec. have nuts. I use overripe bananas and mix with flax meal (to gel it) alone or with other things like coconut/raisins/dates/......I piecemeal it altogether and run it through the homogonizer on my juicer....Then I let it set and "plop" it in blobs on my dehydrator sheets :D ....works great! and yes, urine should be clear....If you think you may need more water try drinking a bottle/glass at bedtime...It may make you get up a couple times in the night but if you're a morning runner it's a big help...I am just starting to do this and have had good luck so far...

I'm a runner! Or I was, anyway...
Ten months ago my hip started to hurt, and my mom STILL hasn't taken me to see anyone about it. It started around the time I ran five miles in a pair of new shoes...*Hangs head in shame* At the time it was the longest distance I'd ever gone, too, because I only got into running at the beginning of last summer.
Anyway, it's a very localized pain, right on my hip bone, and the harder/longer I walk/run, the worse it gets. It usually sticks around for a few days, and if I haven't done anything recently, it doesn't hurt at all. No random twinges or anything. Any ideas what it might be? I'll take months off, go for two short runs, and I'll be back where I started.
...Actually, since I got my new orthodics a few weeks ago, I haven't been having any trouble with it. *Knocks on wood* It hurts a little above where it used to, but not in the same way. Maybe I'm using a rusty muscle? I've been favoring my left side for quite some time...
I'll definitely start eating more fruits and veggies. I wasn't a vegan while I still ran, and I've been hoping to heal this way, but...I guess you can't blame the diet when you cheat. Now that I can run again *crosses heart* I have some incentive to behave.

Read this thread with avid interest. I make a "sports drink" that I carry on long runs (half marathon, etc). 3 cups water, (coconut water if poss for electrolytes), 4 soaked dates, half banana, 1 tsp unroasted Yerba Mate (tea), quarter cup fresh mint leaves, 1 tsp Dulse (electrolytes, again), 1 tblsp Hemp protein powder, half tsp milled flax seeds, quarter cup blueberries. Makes just under 1 litre/32oz drink. A book I've found very interesting is "Thrive - a guide to optimal health and performance through plant-based whole foods" by Brendan Brazier. (www.brendanbrazier.com) Not 100% raw, but certainly high-raw; a small book, packed with vital info on creating stress for your body (endurance athletics), and then recovering. As runners know, recovery is the key point.
Keep running, keep raw!

Have you ever been to a chiropractor? Sounds like you're "out of alignment" which is common for EVERYONE but especially us runners...I swear by mine! I can't go more than 3 weeks when I really KNOW it's time to go again...and if your hip is hurting you are probably either compensating for an injury on your opposite side or your muscle strength is out of balance...Do you do any cross training or weight lifting? The orthotics should help too...Sometimes a "heel lift" will do the trick but I would definately rec. seeing a GOOD chiropractor!!! Good luck!

I haven't seen a chiropractor since the pain first started ten months ago, so I guess I'm overdue...I was wearing the crappy shoes back then, too, so it wouldn't have done much good.
I think I'll go do that! It may help now. There's been an awful lot of popping and cracking when I stretch lately--maybe some things are getting moved because of my forced posture. Thanks for the suggestion! I don't know why I didn't think of that.
I read something about muscle imbalances today by Dr. Sheehan, and the thought had never occurred to me before. (Newbie here.) I don't do any weight lifting, but would riding a bike help at all, or doesn't that work the right muscles?

I would think that those in this forum would side on the theory that "less is better". When it comes to running shoes, I would agree. There is tons of evidence supporting the concept that modern shoes have ruined our feet. They have numbed our foot's natural sensory atributes so much that we are able to run incorrectly for hundreds or thousands of miles until some injury occurs. There are many (myself included) that feel that running with little or no shoes awakens and strengthens the feet and allows us to be in tune with how we are running. Running with thick, heavy shoes with supporting orthotics weakens the foot so that you are stuck using them for the rest of your life. Try this experiment. Run on the sidewalk in your shoes like you normally would, then take off your shoes and run barefoot. I guarantee that you will contact the ground differently and your "new" form will be much less jarring to the body. It has to be, or it will hurt! You can't land heal first with the knee locked without a lot of pain.
There are a few website with some good info.

I definately cycle as a part of my crosstraining! (Swim too)...Biking uses your hamstrings and quads as well as all core muscles so it does use different muscles but that's ok...you want that for "muscle balance." Plus, there is no impact so your hip should be ok, although it may ache if you are sitting? not sure of what is bothering you the "bone", joints, muscles....at any rate biking would be a great alternative.....Try to stretch those hip abductor & hip adductor muscles....it's really hard because of their location but speaking from experience, it's necessary for "hip health!" Good luck! ;)

Thank you, Diantha! I enjoy swimming and biking too, so that's encouraging. :D
Sevenbravo, I would looove to try running barefoot. I think orthotics are little more than a crutch, like glasses--but at the moment they're a tiny painless island for my hip. I think I'll ride up to the track this summer and do it there, because the thought of running barefoot on an unforgiving sidewalk or a street full of smoldering cigarettes makes me cringe. Better yet, I could do perimeters in the grass once all of the bees have gone to sleep. I run much faster in bare feet anyway, but then again, most people probably could. (I envy those who can go out and run on the beach whenever they feel like it). Where do you run? What kind of shoes do you use when you wear them? It would be hard to explain showing up for gym class in bare feet. :o Thanks for the links!

Hey all,
So cool to see all the responses here.
I started my training for the Nike Women's Marathon 3 weeks ago and already feel like something is out of wack energy-wise. I've been 100% for 35 days (about 50-75% for 2 months prior and cooked vegan before that) and now with all the running, I am feeling exhausted and my hair is falling out! What is up with that?!?
I would love to make my own energy bars (since I really don't like Lara bars) and I just got a dehydrator. Would you share your recipes? Also, any ideas for raw protein that are not so nut heavy?
Thanks!

The heaviest shoe I wear is the Nike Free. I also am transitioning into the Puma H-Street. http://www.zappos.com/n/p/p/7218027/c/39208.html
It is like wearing a slipper with EVA foam on the bottom.
Another "shoe" I like wearing for just everyday wear is the Vibram 5 fingers. They are like going barefoot everywhere, without getting kicked out of stores! :) They are a little funky looking, but your toes will wakeup and your feet will get stronger. http://www.vibramfivefingers.com/
The key is to do everything slowly. Run barefoot in the grass for 5 minutes per day and gradually, very gradually, increase your time running barefoot. I love running barefoot in the grass, it makes my feet feel so good. My feet are much stronger than they used to be.
Good luck,
Doug

I am back into running! I ran 2 miles yesterday and 4 miles today. It feels great!!!!!
I'm buying new shoes over the weekend. I ran a marathon four years ago, have no desire to do that for a while. But I still have the technique and even though I do yoga daily, I still really need that deep cleansing sweat. The yoga I practice is intense, but not a cardio intense.
May I please join all of you?!
My first goal is to set up a 3-4 day running routine each week. I would love suggestions. Most of it will be treadmill running since I have the kids.

Welcome back to the world of running! I understand about the treadmill....I had my "running times" there too....I am also forced inside in winter too since I live in "snow country." But the treadmill is great for SWEATING isn't it? :) My only advice is to come back slow and steady (see, that's why I like turtles!) Nothing beats a "runner's high" especially when you can leave pools of sweat around the treadmill right? I always train/run for time first, distance later....It trains your body to be "in motion" for the period of time....sort of like building a base. Also, it helps avoid the viscious cycle of "must do more" or the problem of comparing workouts....If you know you'll be on your treadmill for "X" minutes rather than "X" miles you can throw in walking/sprinting/whatever feels right....mixing it up breaks up treadmill monotony....Good luck!.....We also have a thread to record our exercise called "anyone up for a daily exercise thread?"....JOIN US!!!!

wow, those vibram five fingers are way cool! Not available on the east coast though - I definately want to sample my toes inside before buying.

Diantha, great advice about running. I think I should focus on running time rather than distance. Especially for any runs I do that are outdoors. I love the treadmill that I use, it's at the local community center, and they have great equipment...good speed, good hills. It's all good. Let's pray for no injuries!
Meanwhile, I'm trying to find a running schedule that will pace me a bit. Something four days a week focusing on distance and a variety of intensities. Do you think a website like runnersworld.com would have this type of plan?
Like something to help me set a goal to look forward to.

I am running barefoot on my rebounder right now. I usually wear shoes when I jog on the beach, so when I am in Florida this summer I will run on beach barefoot. I do alot of pavement running and trails, could be dangerous to the foot to run w/o shoes !!!

This is exactly why I love the fivefingers! Your feet still get to enjoy the freedom of movement, without the risks of stepping on something sharp.

I got Asic shoes yesterday (they feel great on my high arches), a new pair of running shorts, (a new running bra), and a "training" schedule to pace me.
I ran 4 miles today, just a little incline and got into a tempo of a 10 minute mile. I was wobbly afterwards, but felt great.
I still need a shower, though!
Oh, and I did have to pause just after 3 miles to change a dirty diaper. The life of a Mom, huh?!
