I have two different names picked out for if I have a girl (I have a hunch that it is). Please tell me which you like better:
Elizabeth Jean (Ellie) Blades
or Salome (pronounced Saul-oh-may) Jean Blades
And what's a good short name for Salome??

If you name her Salome, she will be called Sal by everyone, and they will pronounce it Salami, for sure, Kids are horrible, please do not name your beautiful daughter a name that kids will make fun of.
Elizabeth is nice, Ellie, Liz, Lizzy Beth, Betty, Bette, all of these are acceptable and beautiful names for a girl.
just my thoughts, I could be wrong, but I do know how kids work.

I love Salome. Kids will be cruel if they decide to be no matter what. If it's nother name it will be something else-if they choose to go there. You could always call her Mae for short!

I danced in Japan in 1983, as Salome every one called me Salami San, and it wasn't too pleasant and these were adults,
however, Salome prounced correctly, the way you have it, is indeed beautiful, I would just pick a name that isn't quite so easy to mock, but that is just me.

Hi--
I love Solome. Although I agree kids can be cruel with names. Yet, how about the nickname Mimi
I like Salome-you could call her Sally BUT I REALLY like Mae (since my dd's name is Adaline Mae-we call her Addie Mae)

I love the name Elizabeth (Ellie). My newest Grandaughter is Elizabeth. My twin sisiter is nickname Ellie, also like.
Salmone is pretty but ripe for odd nicknames.

Salome is really beautiful!
But I agree with the others, it's a name that older people will appreciate more than younger ones.
Weigh up the pros and cons... When she's young, she'll get called funny names, but when she hits 16-18+ everyone will be telling her what a gorgeous name it is :)

Hands down, Salome. I think that's a beautiful, unique name (I actually just learned recently while watching the Discovery channel on a documentary about the "Real Life of Jesus" or something that one of his sisters' names was Salome. I'm not religious, but found that interesting, and I immediately liked the name.)
I'm a HUGE proponent of unique names. While some of the comments here have said "why would you want to subject her to teasing..."
Well, speaking from experience. I am in love with name (after 23 years)--Mercedes. Yes, you BET is was a hard name to grow up with, but now I feel blessed and unique, and really own my name. My younger sister is Helena--another beautiful name. Sure I have tons of nicknames--most people who know me well call me Merce, but Mercedes is how I am professionally, academically, etc. My sister and I were both named for our grandmothers, Mercedes and Helen.
So, I can't say enough about giving your child a beautiful name they will grow up to cherish. Certainly not to knock more common names--in fact, Mercedes is much more common in Spanish-speaking countries.

Well, I think Salome wins. I do love the name Elizabeth, but I too fell in love with the name Salome after watching part of that documentary. I am "religious" and I found it to be wonderful that since I've been praying for another peaceful baby that the name Salome means "peaceful." In the Bible she is the wife of Zebedee and the mother of the Sons of Thunder. One of her sons is James, which happens to be the name of my firstborn (but we just call him Jimmy). Does anyone know what Elizabeth means?

Thank you Jenna. That's beautiful! I really wanted to do Salome Elizabeth, but I no one in my family has named their children for my grandmother and she's gettin' up there.

Are you looking for alternate names as well?
My second daughter is named Tirzah (prounced TEARS-uh and it means delight.) It's one of the most beautiful names I've ever heard and she gets so many comments on it. My other daughters middle name is Jerusha. (pronounced JaROOsha) Also just as beautiful with a lot of comments. My sister liked it so much she named her last daughter Jerusha.
Just some ideas, it's so fun naming children isn't it?

How about: Elizabeth Salome Jean Blades
My cousin gives 4 names to all her children, and it is customary in some countries for people to have 4 or 5 names

Speaking as one of those folks that has a unique name that I got constantly teased over in school it sucked at the time, but I do love my name. It is Taevia and once the kids found out that it was from Fiddler on the Roof, the male lead is Tevya (I think that is the spelling, mom changed it a bit obviously) I kept getting called Reb Tev or Rabbi or some such nonsence. The worst was when I was in Highschool and my full name, first, middle and last, was used by my math teacher to name one of her male siberian huskies. She had this weird way of patterning her names where they had to begin with a T, had to have an R and had to have a double E and my name fit it. She told me and showed me his picture as he actually made champion status in the shows she took him too. Now, I thought it was kinda kewl, but I was _not_ going to be telling anyone else about it. Unfortunately she mentioned in class that she had named one of her dogs after a student and they managed to pester it out of her. UGH, I never heard the end of that one!
But, I do love my name now and get a laugh over how people stumble over it. I also do get alot of compliments, though I hate wearing a name tag cause I get asked at least once a day about my name. I wear my hair long and it has gotten long enough to cover my name tag, so I don't get those questions as often anymore so that's good. Whew, a long winded response.. but either way if you like Salome then go for it. Kids will be cruel about something, bet it a name or something else. It is beauiful.

My vote is for Elizabeth.
Although my name is unusual, people are not confused how to pronounce it or spell it (although once a temp receptionist at my husband's workplace spelled it Awdum. LOL!)
When it wasn't a popular name, my niece Mariah got sick and tired of spelling her name for everyone and correcting their pronounciation. Just something to think about.

I love the name Salome! It reminds me of the name Kagome. Personaly, I think that any kid will make fun of any name, IF they are like that, regardless of what the name is. I'm a sucker for different names and I love that one! Elizabeth is beautiful and there are so many other ppl out there that have the same name! I dunno, maybe you dont mind that, but I like the unique aproach to names and such. I mean your not naming her "Looty Fee" or anything like that! ;) Wish you all the best in finding the name for your girl! :)

Hmm...I'm considering the four-name approach. I'm not really worried about what other kids or people say, I will be homeschooling her and my son so they won't have to "live" with other kids. I named my son James and we call him Jimmy- people have said not-nice things or made faces when I told them. I don't care, if they want to be rude then that's just spit on their character. People will be people!! :p

I hav friends that used the family name (mom's maiden name) as their fist sins middle name.
Does you grandmother have a married name or maide name that meshes better with Salome. This will pay homage to her and the whole line.
You can name her Salome Elizabeth Blades, and still call her JEAN"Y" as a nick name.
Salome is beautiful and JEan just doesn't quite match
I use my grandmothers ame hyphened in my daughters middle name.
She's deceased now, my girls know where their name comes from but they don't use it.
