View Full Version : Normal to not really like young thai coconut?

Hey ya'll--

So, I was able to procure some young thai coconuts in Burlington (what what!)--found them at an Asian market down the street from my apartment. So, I got them home, cracked one open (a harrowing experience in and of itself), and it was fresh and fine and everything, but I tasted the water and was like "WHOA," and didn't really like it...at all. I don't even know what it was about it. Perhaps I'll get used to it?

I blended the flesh up with the water and used it in a green smoothie and it was great--made my smoothie super creamy. And maybe this is just pyschosomatic, but I definitely felt great after, really clear, awake, focused. So I definitely want to make fresh coconut a part of my diet, but just...don't like it straight up.

Am I alone on this one?

No, I'm with you...Personally I don't care for the taste of the coconut water but because of it's many benefits I use it in green smoothies and stuff...Although I do try my best to drown out it's flavor:) I like the taste of the fresh coconut meat though!

EC ;)

Yea, the meat was fine, it tasted milder and more like actual coconut. The water was just really, really strong and icky and kind of made me gag. But I do like it in the smoothie.

Phew, glad I'm not a freak! I feel like adoring young thai coconuts is a rite of passage for raw foodies.

You're craaaazy! I love young coconut water, especially nice and cold, especially after working out. How about this: you dump out your coocnut water and send it to me airmail with dry ice and keep the meat for yourself. :D

I didn't like it when I first tried one but I kept using them in different recipes and the taste is starting to grow on me. I had a smoothie tonight with the meat and water blended with other fruits. I've never tried them in green smoothies but it sounds like I should give it a try.

I don't like them either! I've tried them on many different occasions...even when everyone else around me during training at Alissa's were enjoying them at Au Lac...they have not grown on me yet. I even tried in smoothies and it just ruined it for me. You're definitely not alone!

Well, I'm on the fence with this one, sometimes they taste kind of like dirty sox and dirt, other times they taste kind of like sweet dirty sox, but I'm not a big fan, I do like them in smoothies occasionally, but I much prefer to use almond milk in things, and cashews in stead of the meat, and I prefer to spend my $1 to $2 on othe fruit like pineapple, I can't seem to get enough of this stuff right now. LOL

* gasp * ...coconut water is yummieeeeee!! :p I just had some this morning...sooo good. Sometimes when I can't seem to down enough plain water, it really hits the spot. But yeah, not all coconuts tastes exactly the same. Make sure the water looks clear and not cloudy, that could be a sign that it's not so 'good' as in fresh.

I love the baby coconuts! I wack wack wack away and relish in the sweet water. The meat is so versitile too. I make chocolate pudding with them almost every day. Im addicted.

But you know, we all love different things. Such as (I´ll admit it) Durian just doesnt do it for me.....its too stinky

I do not like coconut in any form. I tried to like it but still do not.

So glad I'm not the only one who doesn't like coconut water. But saying that, I remember the first time I tried carrot juice. I gagged!!!! It was awful. Now I enjoy it. I think something new takes time to adjust to. I've never drank coffee, although I did have a swallow and I thought I was going to dye. Well I heard most people feel the same way when they first have coffee, then they get to the point where they can't go a day without it. I'm sure the same would happen with coconut water, but the expense and the mess of opening up (I know it just takes practice) makes it hard for me to keep trying it and letting my body adjust to the taste. Maybe some day . . . .

I'm with Rawkinlocs and Helen and RP...

I don't like them and I've tried to like them, but the time and money is not worth it to me...

RP...I don't think you will ever get enough of your pineapple...LOL

Oh Just Me, I think you are RIGHT, I'm eating alot of it, but then I have always liked pineapple,

Even when I was cooked, I ate alot of pineapple, but then it was canned, finally had some fresh in Hawaii in 1983 on one of my many Honeymoons, and mmmmmmmmm
HAD to have it, it was always something I had in my home

Now I get it already cut up at Costco and it is 2 pounds for $7.99, cored, peeled, and perfect, I buy two of those every few days, I probably eat about a pound a day, yummmmmyy

I love coconuts. I grew up in Jamaica, so i think I have a taste for them. I do think that thai coconuts taste a bit different then coconuts in Jamaica. They look smaller. But most times I'm just happy to have a coconut. I spend months just looking for one that isn't spoiled.

Thanks for all the responses. Now I don't feel like such a raw foodie reject =)

Although, I have a feeling the taste could grow on me. I used the coconut milk again in my green smoothie this morning (banana + orange + collard leaves + coconut milk + leftover brazil nut pulp + flax--I kinda just throw everything but the kitchen sink in these things), and it was DELICIOUS (though the coconut flavor pretty disguised).

So, I'm not ready to give up on them yet. I want to try using the flesh in some dessert recipes. But, am so relieved some of you relate =)

ps-am I really crazy to think I can FEEL the coconut benefit my system? Like I feel quite energized, clear headed, etc. after having it. It could be pyschosomatic. Or not!

Yeah, it might grow on you the more your buds change. I didn't like them at first, now I savor them! I even mix my wheatgrass juice with it to help get it down!

This kinda thing fascinates me; people's different tastes. Just like the differences genes create.... the body is just amazing.

I don't think it could be psychosomatic. If my memory serves me correct, coconut water, especially young ones, replenish your electrolytes so that would definitely help with your energy level since you are being hydrated.

RP-NOW THAT'S A LOT OF PINEAPPLE! LOL

I like regular "old" coconuts just fine, but those baby ones make me totally gag. The water is yucky (to me) and even trying them in green smoothies completely ruined the green smoothie... no masking that smell/taste.
