View Full Version : Any resources to dispel this protein myth?

Hi,

I've been 95% raw since December 1, 2005 :) I've been following Alissa's recipes mainly :) In December I did my 100 percent raw food challenge and was amazed. I looove the way I'm feeling and looking. I know that is all that matters, but I have a question. Does anyone know of any good scientific-minded articles that dispel the idea of complete protein?

I have a friend who is an exercise physiologist and he insists that soy is the only thing I could eat that would give me the "complete" protein I need. Well, I'm allergic to soy and most of it is well, cooked.

Ugh!

I eat tons of greens so I know I am getting the amino acids I need to make protein, but I want to put this debate to rest. I know I don't need to really do it, but I am trying to 'enlighten' my friend LOL. It's not usually how I spend my time, but I think it would benefit him to open his paradigm.

Any articles or resources?

Thanks so much for your help in advance!

Thanks,
L

The funny thing is even the person who originally write the book and talked about matching foods to create complete proteins recanted it. Everyone is still referencing that original work though. The body has a pool of amino acids... as long as you regularly get the amino acids needed all is fine.

Why don't you ask him about proteins being 50% unusable after cooking and see what answers he has!!

Cheers,
Sheryl

I never understood why they are only 50% unusable.. I mean if heat changes or destroys them.. why only half? Dosn't make sence to me..

I don't know the exact reference... I read it most recently in Gabriel Cousins book. It's that the proteins coagulate.... and studies ahve shown about 50% unusable. It's not a surprise exactly... cooking doesn't destroy all nutriens.. only some. Same in this case.

If you need the reference I can search it out in one of his books.

Cheers,
Sheryl

Thanks for the link, rawpriestess...I had already shown him that bit before :) I take it as a sign that I showed him the right information lol :) I love when this type of think happens :)

I think I'm dealing with an belief system when it comes to my friend that can't be changed, so I have to just let it go. He doesn't believe in anything that is outside his paradigm which includes the things he learned in graduate school. It kinda shocks me to think he's a health teacher in community college and doesn't want to be open-minded about this plant protein issue. Also, not to sound judgmental, but I know he takes meds for high cholesterol...grr...Ugh!

I know it's not my problem or issue though...I'm just going to keep eatin' raw and lovin' life :) I'm learning though to just love this person any way LOL :)

I'm confused. Is your friend saying that we are supposed to consume all essential amino acids at the same time? Or is s/he just discussing what a complete protein is?

Thanks for the articles...I appreciate it. :)

I guess I learned a big lesson in the way I approached this issue.

My friend who I mentioned in this thread read what I wrote. :(

So, yep, I am a bad friend to speak in such a negative way about my friend.

I guess I learned a big lesson here, huh?

I am back to lurking here, but so glad and happy to have spend time here with everyone :)
